Speculation about who will be the 2024 Republican presidential nominee is at an all-time high as former President Donald Trump continues to tease an attempt for a second term. True enough, Trump appears to have many allies within the GOP who are prepared to support him if he’s on the ticket. Still others, though, seem either uncertain or decidedly against him as a candidate. Mounting legal concerns including the Capitol attack investigation have plagued Trump since he left office, and seemingly caused him to slip in the polls.
Here is where prominent Republican lawmakers stand on whether or not they support Trump as a candidate for the 2024 presidential election:
May 201: Launch Of First Advertising Campaign
On May 1, the campaign announced that they were spending $1.5 million on national advertisements touting Trump’s accomplishments in the first hundred days. The ad buy, which included advertisements targeted at voters who supported specific agenda items of Trump’s presidency, came approximately 42 months before election day 2020, or any other major party’s candidate declarations.FactCheck.org found several inaccuracies in the advertisement, and Eric Zorn of the Chicago Tribune described the 30-second advertisement as being, “stuffed with Trump’s signature misleading puffery”. Additionally, original versions of the ad showed Trump shaking hands with H. R. McMaster, an active-duty military member who was barred from participating in any political advocacy while in uniform. Subsequent airings of the advertisement substituted this clip.
On May 18, Trump hosted chairmen of the Colorado, Iowa, Michigan, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania state parties at the White House. Each of their states are considered to be presidential swing states. On May 25, Trump’s sons Donald Jr. and Eric, along with Eric’s wife Lara, held a series of meetings at the Washington, D.C., offices of the Republican National Committee to outline campaign strategy.

Support From The Far Right
According to Michael Barkun, the Trump campaign was remarkable for bringing fringe ideas, beliefs, and organizations into the mainstream. During his presidential campaign, Trump was accused of pandering to white supremacists. He retweeted open racists, and repeatedly refused to condemn David Duke, the Ku Klux Klan or white supremacists, in an interview on CNN’s State of the Union, saying he would first need to “do research” because he knew nothing about Duke or white supremacists. Duke himself enthusiastically supported Trump throughout the 2016 primary and election, and has said he and like-minded people voted for Trump because of his promises to “take our country back”. Trump was later reported to have praised Adolf Hitler to his chief of staff John Kelly, opining that “Hitler did a lot of good things,” and also reportedly kept a volume of Hitler’s speeches on his bedside cabinet when he was younger, and was often compared to Hitler in the media during his 2016 campaign.
After repeated questioning by reporters, Trump said he disavowed David Duke and the KKK. Trump said on MSNBC‘s Morning Joe: “I disavowed him. I disavowed the KKK. Do you want me to do it again for the 12th time? I disavowed him in the past, I disavow him now.”
Can Donald Trump Be Stopped From Running For President In 2024
Constitutionally, Trump can launch a second White House bid after losing in 2020 – his team has previously hinted that he could seek another term in 2024.
The 22nd Amendment states: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of President more than once.”
The outgoing president was met by a 21 gun salute along with cheers from his family and supporters as he landed at Joint Base Andrews.
Taking the podium as Hail to the Chief blared, he said it’s been an “incredible four years” and insisted “we’ll be back“.
The Republican was met by chants of “USA, USA” and “thank you Trump” as attendees to his farewell waved US for flags.
Trump said: “I will always fight for you, I will be watching, I will be listening. The future of this country has never been better.”
He added: “Have a good life, we’ll see you soon” before leaving stage with YMCA blaring over the loud speakers.
If Trump decides to run in 2024, the Republican would be following the precedent set by Grover Cleveland.
He lost his re-election to Republican Benjamin Harrison in 1884 and four years later decided to run for president again.
Cleveland won and became the 24th president as he didn’t serve consecutive terms.

The shocking FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago quickly sparked a heated legal debate as to whether a conviction would disqualify former President Trump from running again for the White House.
As political and legal experts united in calling Mondays raid unprecedented, there was little consensus on whether it could ruin Trumps chances of a 2024 run or even hand him a surefire victory.
Soon after Trump confirmed the raid saying his Florida estate was under siege and occupied by the feds many legal experts pointed to a law they said Trump could be hit with if he was convicted of taking classified presidential records, widely thought to be the potential federal violation the raid was investigating.
Marc Elias, a lawyer for Hillary Clintons 2016 presidential campaign, highlighted it as a really, really big reason why the raid today is a potential blockbuster in American politics.
He linked to a screenshot of 18 U.S.C. § 2071, which makes it a crime if those with custody of government documents willfully and unlawfully conceals, removes, mutilates, obliterates, falsifies or destroys them.
Anyone convicted faces up to three years in prison and shall forfeit his office and be disqualified from holding any office under the United States.

However, a flurry of other legal experts insisted that the legal block had long been ruled not to apply.
Prioritizing His Legal Fights
While Trump hasnât made a firm timing decision yet as he mulls a 2024 bid, his lack of planning for a campaign rollout has signaled to those around him that he wants to bide his time.
Until adding former Florida Solicitor General Chris Kise to his legal defense team on Tuesday, Trump had been struggling to navigate the legal jeopardy he finds himself in as federal investigators sift through the classified documents they seized from his residence â possibly building a criminal case in the process.
Those around him say Trump appears to be putting his political ambitions on the backburner â if only temporarily â to give his legal team space to operate and strategize without the time constraints that a presidential campaign would demand. The former President has spent the three weeks since the FBI conducted its search at Mar-a-Lago trying to capitalize on the moment politically, while his attorneys have meanwhile struggled to develop a clear strategy. His legal team waited until weeks after the search, for example, to file a so-called special master request for an independent review of the materials taken from his home, which is the subject of a hearing this week.
âRight now, itâs a question of whether he wants to turn everything political or gain some legal stability to make sure everything turns out OK before taking that next step,â said one of the Trump advisers.

Sen. Ron Johnson hasnt decided whether he will run for reelection next year, but he already has the most powerful endorsement in Republican politics: former President Donald Trumps.
Johnson, who was first elected in the 2010 Republican wave and won a closely contested reelection in 2016, has not said whether he will seek a third term and has emphasized multiple times in recent months that he plans to take his time making the decision. But Trump gave him his backing in a statement released through his leadership PAC, Save America PAC, on Thursday.
Even though he has not yet announced that he is running, and I certainly hope he does, I am giving my Complete and Total Endorsement to Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Trump said in the statement. He is brave, he is bold, he loves our Country, our Military, and our Vets. He will protect our Second Amendment, and everything else we stand for. It is the kind of courage we need in the U.S. Senate.
He has no idea how popular he is, Trump added. Run, Ron, Run!

Polling is one indication of Trumps sway over the GOP. By the end of his presidency, he had an approval rating of just 38.6%, and an October 2021 Pew Research poll found that only 44% of Republicans want Trump to run again in 2024.
But his supporters are die-hards, and some happen to be party elites and major GOP donors. Despite Trump’s 2020 electoral loss and two impeachments, his rallies are still highly attended by enthusiastic participants. And, following Trump’s criticism of the Commission on Presidential Debates as biased against him during the 2020 election, the Republican National Committee signaled its plan to require its candidates to withdraw from presidential debates.
As Perry says, He has a solid 30% or so of the American people behind him seemingly no matter what.
For now, Trump is also maintaining strong fiscal support. At the start of 2022, his team announced that its various political committees had amassed $122 million in funding. In local, state, and federal elections, the candidate who spends more money on their campaign tends to win the election. So even though Trump has yet to officially announce his 2024 candidacy, entering with millions in cash would provide him with an advantage, covering major campaign expenses such as staff salaries, wide-reaching ads, and frequent travel to campaign in key areas.
