The purpose of superdelegates has never been to overturn the choice of voters in primaries. True, in principle they might act as a last barrier to a manifestly unacceptable candidate, like George Wallace or Henry Fordbut even that is unlikely, if a candidate has won a decisive victory in the primaries. Rather, their real importance is their indirect influence on the upstream end of the process. Their convention votes incentivize candidates to reach out to them in the early stages of campaigns. A candidate who seeks superdelegates support will need to listen to them and promise to work with them. Also, superdelegates commitments early in the process help establish party support and momentum for favored candidates. Superdelegates do not decide the nomination, but they do influence the nominees, the media, and the votersand that is exactly as it should be.

The Democratic Party ought to open the nominating process to voters registered as independents, allowing them to sign up as Democrats on primary day. All primary candidates for a voter-nominated office are listed on a single ballot, and only the two candidates who get the most votes in the primary election will move on to the general election.

However, if no candidate has been nominated at the primary election for a voter-nominated office, a candidate can use the independent nomination process to run in the general election.

Write-in candidates for voter-nominated offices cannot run in the general election, however, they can still run in the primary election. If a write-in candidate is one of the top two vote-getters in the primary election, the candidate can move on to the general election.

Candidates running for the office of U.S. President can run in the general election as either a Presidential Elector using the independent nomination process or a Presidential Elector write-in candidate.

On 15 March, the names of the remaining presidential candidates Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and John Kasich on the Republican side, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders for the Democrats will be on ballot papers in five states and one US territory. Although this Tuesday will be less frantic than Super Tuesday two weeks ago, when 12 states and one territory held primary elections, its just as important. By 16 March, the race for the White House could look very different depending on how Florida, Illinois, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio vote.

Thats partly because the delegate numbers in those states are so high in total, 367 Republican and 792 Democratic delegates are available on 15 March. That brings us significantly closer to the finish line of having just two presidential candidates: at the moment, 33% of Democratic delegates have been pledged but by the time the polls have closed on 15 March, that number will rise to 50%. For Republicans, pledged delegates will jump from 46% to 61%.

Those percentages just mean that playing catch-up gets harder from here. Clinton is still on track for the Democratic nomination to change that, Sanders needs to pick up at least 326 of the pledged delegates .

Elections are warlike. They pit, people and organizations against one another in ideological strife. They also stress test coalitions and determine who will hang together so we do not, in the words of Ben Franklin, most assuredly hang separately.

In 2016, progressive Democratic precinct chairs such as my good friend Egberto Willies took flack from people similar to them on the ideological spectrum for going to bat for Clinton in an effort to avoid Donald Trump becoming president. The coalition splintered a chunk of Sanders voters stayed home, voted third party, or even voted for Trump.

It is easy for the more mainstream Democratic voter to point the finger at those voters and point out that their lack of party loyalty led to a worse outcome for all of us. The criticism has some validity.

But that critique becomes entirely hypocritical as soon as the left center/moderate wing of the Democratic Party jumps ship to vote for Republicans, even in a primary . The goal of progressives is not to help elect Sarah Davis and Ed Emmett, two well-known public figures who serve as a local carrying source for other Republicans to slide into office. The goal of progressives is to change the values that govern our world.

Ever since Idaho Lt. Gov. Janice McGeachin announced in May that shes running for governor, the call went out for all good Idahoans to do their civic duty and register as a Republican so they can vote in the primary and ensure McGeachin never gets elected. That call got louder when Ammon Bundy announced in June that hes running, too. The call hit perhaps a fever pitch in recent days after McGeachin embarrassed herself and Idaho on the national stage by issuing a meaningless executive order and inquiring whether she could deploy the Idaho National Guard to the U.S.-Mexico border while Gov. Brad Little was out of the state.

Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., said former President Donald Trumps fate should be left in the hands of the Department of Justice and the federal courts over his role in allegedly inciting the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection.

In an interview with ABC “This Week” anchor George Stephanopoulos on Sunday, the senator said all Americans, even former presidents, are subject to the U.S. court system.

“What happens with a president is that he has the shield of office, which in many cases prohibits or limits the ability of the courts to address issues surrounding that. What an impeachment does is take away that shield. President Trump was no longer president at the time that that occurred,” Rounds said. “The courts are the appropriate place where those questions should be answered.”

Rounds voted to certify the election of President Joe Biden and voted against convicting Donald Trump in his Senate impeachment trial for his alleged role in the insurrection. On the day of the insurrection, he was among the last to leave the Senate chambers and helped scoop up and secure the boxes of validated electoral votes.

“If they think they have got that, they can bring the evidence forward. In my opinion, they haven’t done that yet,” Rounds said.

When you show up to your polling location, youll decide whether you want a Democratic or Republican primary ballot.

But after choosing a side in the primary, you have to stay in that lane through the runoff. You cant vote Republican in the primary election and then participate in a runoff election between top Democratic candidates.

That said, voting in a primary does not commit you to vote for a particular candidate in the general election. You can vote for either partys candidate in the November election.

Top Two Candidates Open Primary Act And Voter

The Top Two Candidates Open Primary Act, which took effect January 1, 2011, requires that all candidates for a voter-nominated office be listed on the same ballot. Previously known as partisan offices, voter-nominated offices are state legislative offices, U.S. congressional offices, and state constitutional offices. Only the two candidates receiving the most votesregardless of party preferencemove on to the general election regardless of vote totals.

Write-in candidates for voter-nominated offices can only run in the primary election. However, a write-in candidate can only move on to the general election if the candidate is one of the top two vote-getters in the primary election.

Additionally, there is no independent nomination process for a general election. California’s new open primary system does not apply to candidates running for U.S. President, county central committee, or local offices.
