Just seven months ago, Republican leaders in the state House were calling on Rep. Aaron Bernstine to resign over controversial social media posts. Now theyre hosting a fundraiser for his re-election.

According to a campaign memo from Bernstine, R-Beaver, viewed by the Capital-Star Thursday, House Majority Leader Kerry Benninghoff, R-Centre, and House Speaker Bryan Cutler, R-Lancaster, will appear at a June 8 breakfast fundraiser for Bernstine in Harrisburg.

The fundraiser is also listed on the website of the House Republican Campaign Committee, which works to defend incumbents and elect new state House Republicans. Admission to the event at Cafe Fresco in Harrisburg runs $250 to $1,000, according to information posted to a calendar maintained by Greenlee Partners, an influential Harrisburg lobbying firm.

In October 2020, the Beaver County Times reported that Bernstine had posted videos of himself encouraging his five-year-old son to smoke a cigar and use vulgar language about women.

Less than 24 hours after the story was published, House GOP leadership issued a joint statement for Bernstine to resign.

As parents and fellow legislators, we are disgusted by Rep. Bernstines conduct, the statement read. In order to take the time necessary to focus on his family and repair his relationships, we call on Rep. Bernstine to immediately resign.

Pennsylvania House Of Representatives

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives is the lower chamber of the Pennsylvania General Assembly. Alongside the Pennsylvania State Senate, it forms the legislative branch of the Pennsylvania state government and works alongside the governor of Pennsylvania to create laws and establish a state budget. Legislative authority and responsibilities of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives include passing bills on public policy matters, setting levels for state spending, raising and lowering taxes, and voting to uphold or override gubernatorial vetoes.

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives meets in the state capitol building in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

  • All 203 House seats were up for election in 2020. The chamber’s Republican majority increased from 110-93 to 111-92.
  • Pennsylvania has a divided government, and no political party holds a state government trifecta. A trifecta exists when one political party simultaneously holds the governors office and majorities in both state legislative chambers. As of October 31, 2021, there are 23 Republican trifectas, 15 Democratic trifectas, and 12 divided governments where neither party holds trifecta control. In the 2020 election, Republicans had a net gain of two trifectas and two states under divided government became trifectas. Prior to that election, Pennsylvania had a divided government. There were 21 Republican trifectas, 15 Democratic trifectas, and 14 divided governments.

    About Legislative Sessions In Pennsylvania

The Tenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution declares that any power not already given to the federal government is reserved to the states and the people. State governments across the country use this authority to hold legislative sessions where a state’s elected representatives meet for a period of time to draft and vote on legislation and set state policies on issues such as taxation, education, and government spending. The different types of legislation passed by a legislature may include resolutions, legislatively referred constitutional amendments, and bills that become law.

Article II of the Pennsylvania Constitution establishes when the Pennsylvania General Assembly, of which the House of Representatives is a part, is to meet. Section 4 of Article II states that the General Assembly is to convene its regular session on the first Tuesday of January each year.

Section 4 gives the Governor of Pennsylvania the authority to convene special sessions of the General Assembly either when he judges a special session to be in the public interest, or when a majority of each legislative House requests a special session.

    One Trip Two Fundraisers

Maverick Finance organized Cormans fundraiser this week at The Phoenician, a luxury resort in Scottsdale, Arizona. There, the Republican senator will raise money for one of his campaign war chests: the Build PA PAC, which rakes in millions of dollars every year for his and other GOP campaigns.

It is scheduled to piggyback off another golf fundraiser there with an even higher price tag: one benefitting the Republican Legislative Campaign Committee, a national organization in which Corman, as well as Cutler, were recently given leadership roles.

The committee is an arm of the larger Republican State Leadership Committee, a Washington, D.C.-based political organization. In 2020, the RSLC spent tens of millions of dollars on state legislative campaigns, with the money coming from corporations and billionaire Republican donors like Sheldon Adelson and members of then-U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos family, along with small donations from across the country, according to campaign finance and IRS filings.

The national organizations fundraiser will launch Wednesday with a reception with Corman as a special guest and continue the next day with golfing at yet another ritzy Scottsdale golf club, Troon North. The clubs two 18-hole courses stretch through natural ravines and foothills where giant granite boulders lie strewn across the rugged landscape of Arizonas Sonoran Desert, according to its website.

Senate Judiciary Probe Of Trump’s 2020 Machinations Zeroes In On Pennsylvania House Republican

The new report indicates Rep. Scott Perry took a direct role in attempting to help Trump install loyalists in the Justice Department.

A Senate Democratic report released Thursday places Rep. Scott Perry at the center of efforts to help former President Donald Trump overturn the 2020 election results, urging other congressional investigators to further probe his involvement in the runup to the Jan. 6 insurrection.

In the last weeks of Trump’s administration, according to the new Senate Judiciary Committee majority report, the former president asked Richard Donoghue then the Justice Departments second-in-command for his cell number so lawmakers concerned about the election could call him. Perry was one of the lawmakers who ended up with the principal associate deputy attorney generals phone number.

The report details that Perry contacted Donoghue on Dec. 27, saying Trump himself had suggested the call, and raised false election claims. Perry told Donoghue, the report states, that there were things going on in Pennsylvania with regard to ballot-counting that he found improper.

Perry also recommended to Donoghue that Jeffrey Clark, then the head of the Justice Departments civil division, should become more involved in DOJ’s handling of the 2020 election. Trump later considered Clark as a replacement for the acting attorney general, seeing Clark as more sympathetic to claims of voter fraud that have proven baseless.
