Who Is Running Against Trump For President

Don't Miss

Former Mayor Of South Bend Indiana

Pence was asked if he’d run against Trump in 2024. Hear his response

Buttigieg is the breakout star of the 2020 primaries. The mayor of a small city in Indiana, the 37-year-old was almost completely unknown one year ago. Now he is positioned as a potential leader among the next generation of Democrats openly gay, millennial and a veteran of the war in Afghanistan.

He has become respected as an intellectual he studied at Harvard and Oxford making him the antidote to Trump. His policy agenda is more specific than many of his rivals: he has endorsed a single-payer healthcare system , endorsed a Green New Deal for tackling climate change and taxes on the wealthiest.

He is currently polling fourth place and is unlikely to become the nominee. But his sway on the race may be critical: his moderate voters may likely to switch to Biden if he dropped out. He could also go into a future major race as a far more serious player on the back of this run.

Who Are Trumps 2020 Republican Challengers He Dubbed The Three Stooges

President Donald Trump recycled his own Three Stooges insult against a trio of Republican Party members running against him in the upcoming 2020 GOP presidential primary.

Trump hurled another The Three Stooges remark at former Republican South Carolina governor Mark Sanford Monday after he officially entered the race and became the third GOP challenger to Trump in 2020. Trump previously lumped Sanford in with former Illinois congressman Joe Walsh and former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld in late August when the president first compared them to the classic comedic trio, when Sanford began claiming Republicans were running for the hills to escape Trumps lies.

On Monday, Trump again brought up the June 2009 story of how Sanford engaged in an extramarital affair which ultimately led to his resignation from office. Although Sanford later was elected to Congress in 2013, the story of his Argentina affair and his bogus claim of being on an Appalachian Trail hike made him the focus of jokes and ridicule which he has since tried to own.

In late April, Trump first lobbed the Three Stooges insult at Sanford, Weld and Walsh as they all lined themselves up to primary the president next year. He labeled all three bad while also first calling out Sanford for the scandal.

In 2018, Sanford owned up to the 2009 scandal in an interview with NBC News after he was defeated by a Trump-backed Republican opponent for congress.

Would Trumps Support Change If He Were Charged With A Crime

The former president faces a handful of investigations, including from the Department of Justice and the U.S. House select committee on the origins of the Jan. 6 attack, a grand jury looking into potential election interference in Georgia and, most recently, an FBI probe into classified materials removed from the White House and kept at Trumps Florida estate. Some had been recovered or returned earlier this year. But when the FBI executed a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago last month, agents still found more than 100 classified documents and 43 empty folders with classified markings, among thousands of other official records, according to a Department of Justice list of items.

Support for Trumps candidacy in 2024 would not change much if any of these investigations result in Trump being charged with a crime, according to this poll. Sixty-five percent of Americans would oppose another run for the White House. More than six in 10 Republicans would still want to see him launch a campaign. Meanwhile, 73 percent of independents say he should not run again if he is charged.

This poll is just a snapshot of the current political environment. With two months until the midterm elections and another two years until the 2024 presidential election, a lot can still change with the Republican primary field and the investigations.

Us Sen Tim Scott Of South Carolina

Scott has made at least five public trips to Iowa since 2019 to help campaign for Iowa Republicans. At a June Cedar Rapids event, he touted Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds school choice agenda.

And in August, he headlined an event for U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson, who is seeking reelection in November. Midway through his speech at that event, a member of the audience shouted, Tim Scott for president! Of my homeowners association, yes! Scott replied.

Was Donald Trump Only Accused of Racism After He Began Running for ...

While many expected Trump to announce his bid for re-election back in July, it is now looking like the former president will wait until after the midterms to make the announcement.

Trump’s former adviser Kellyanne Conway said that he would like to announce his candidacy by Thanksgiving, after the elections, CBS News reports. She explained that, “Donald Trump wants his old job back,” and that “he’s as active as anybody in these midterm elections.”

As president, Trump has repeatedly rejected the conclusions of the U.S. intelligence agencies that the Russian government interfered in the election, and has also denied allegations that his campaign colluded with Russia.

The March 2019 report issued by special council Robert Mueller at the conclusion of his investigations found President Trump, whether as a candidate or President elect, had committed no crime.

Heres How Democrats Can Stop Trump From Running For President In 2024

  • Democratic lawmakers could use the 14th Amendment to stop Trump from running for president
  • To use the 14th Amendment, the Democratic Party could file a lawsuit against Trump
  • Trump has previously been impeached for inciting the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol

Democratic lawmakers could use the 14th Amendment to keep former president Donald Trump from running for the presidency again in the 2024 election, according to an opinion piece.

Section 3 of the 14th Amendment states that a person is disqualified from being president, vice-president, senator or representative in Congress if they participated in an insurrection or rebellion or aided such acts against the United States while holding federal office.

To use the 14th Amendment, the Democratic Party could file a lawsuit against Trump in federal court, seeking a ruling that Trump participated in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection and an order that would disqualify him from running even as a candidate for the presidency. Trump can then choose to fight the lawsuit or claim the Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination, according to an opinion piece written by Alan B. Morrison and published by The Hill.

Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in January for a charge of incitement of insurrection after a mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol in the final days of his office. The riot led to the death of five people, including a Capitol police officer.

Trump Should Announce Run For 2024 Soon To Avoid Indictment Source Says

Donald Trump hints at running for president again with campaign-style video

Donald Trump has to announce a campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024 in the next two weeks, according to a senior source close to Trump, if the former president wants to head off being indicted under the Espionage Act after the FBI search at Mar-a-Lago last week.

In communications reviewed by the Guardian, the source indicated Trump needed to announce because politically it would be harder for the US Department of Justice to indict a candidate for office than a former president out of the electoral running.

A source also suggested Ron DeSantis, Trumps only serious competitor in Republican polling, will not run in 2024 if Trump chooses to enter the race.

He can wait, the source said of the Florida governor.

In contrast, a former White House official said Trump could yet decide not to run, for fear of losing his grip on his party and role as a kingmaker should an indictment force him to drop out of the race.

A search warrant unsealed on Friday showed that the FBI seized from Mar-a-Lago five sets of top secret documents, three sets of secret documents and three sets of confidential documents, as well as other records.

It was reported that some seized documents concerned nuclear weapons. Trump called that report a hoax.

The warrant also revealed Trump to be under investigation for possible violations of the Espionage Act, which dates from 1917 and has been used to go after whistleblowers.

But his legal jeopardy extends further.

Washington Gov Jay Inslee

Inslee became the first sitting governor to join the presidential field when he kicked off his campaign in early March.

The Washington governor is currently serving his second term in Olympia after more than two decades as a member of Congress, and said that while he is proud of efforts to raise the states minimum wage and increase access to early childhood education, his presidential bid would prioritize climate change, which he labeled an existential threat during his launch event.

On Aug. 21, he announced on MSNBC that he was dropping out of the race.

Its become clear that Im not going to be carrying the ball, but were going to make sure somebody is, he said in the interview.

What’s Trump Said About A 2024 Presidential Bid

The former president has this year hinted on a few occasions that he was considering running for president.

He asked a crowd in Nashville, Tennessee in June if they would like him to run.

“We have a president who ran twice, won twice and may have to do it a third time. Can you believe it?” he declared in Nevada, the following month.

And last month at a rally in Pennsylvania, he told the crowd, “in 2024, most importantly, we are going to take back our magnificent White House.”

What To Watch For

Whether Trump will announce a presidential bid before the November 8 midterm election. In July, he told New York magazine he already made up his mind about a presidential run, and that the only remaining question is whether hell announce it before or after the midterms, adding I feel very confident that, if I decide to run, Ill win. He has reportedly been on the fence about announcing his campaign for months, telling aides in July he was eager to launch his presidential bid by the end of the month in order to capitalize on Bidens flopping approval rating, which hit a low of 37.9% on July 22, according to FiveThirtyEights weighted polling average. He reiterated his indication again last month, even as the Department of Justice launched an investigation into whether he took classified White House documents to his home at Mar-a-Lago, telling right-wing radio host Hugh Hewitt he would have no prohibition against running in light of the probe.

And I think most children do that with their parents. I think there’s something unique in that we’re colleagues.”

Trump introduced her father at the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio. She also penned an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal in September 2016 about Donald Trump’s proposed policies on maternity leave and childcare costs.

United States Presidential Election

2024 United States presidential election
Incumbent President

The 2024 United States presidential election will be the 60th quadrennial presidential election, scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, 2024. It will be the first presidential election after electoral votes are redistributed according to the post-2020 censusreapportionment. Incumbent president Joe Biden stated in January 2022 his intent to run for reelection to a second term, with Vice President Kamala Harris as his running mate. However, as of September 2022 Biden has not committed to a reelection campaign. Former President Donald Trump suggested in March 2022 that he intends to run for president for a nonconsecutive second term, after his loss in 2020.

In the United States, general elections follow caucuses and primary elections held by the major parties to determine their nominees. The winner of the 2024 presidential election is scheduled to be inaugurated on January 20, 2025.

Us Sen Ted Cruz Of Texas

Cruz leveraged a sophisticated ground game and widespread evangelical support to defeat Trump and win Iowa’s 2016 GOP caucuses. He told Newsmax in July 2021 that he is “certainly looking at” running for president again in 2024.

He campaigned on behalf of U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst in October 2020, and he returned to headline a fundraiser for U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson as she prepared to run for reelection in 2022. He traveled to Iowa in August to hold a fundraiser with U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley.

The 10 Republicans Most Likely To Run For President

The 2024 presidential election may still be three years away, but Republicans have already begun to jockey for their places in the primary.

Former President Trumps repeated hints that he could mount another bid for the White House remains perhaps the biggest obstacle for other would-be contenders.

While none have spoken definitively about their plans for 2024, many potential candidates have already started networking with GOP leaders and donors in key states while testing out campaign messages in public appearances.

Here are the 10 Republicans most likely to run for president in 2024:

Donald TrumpTrump has been teasing the possibility of a 2024 comeback almost from the moment he left the Oval Office, and his hints have gotten more brazen in recent months.

Hes avoided offering specifics about his thought process, though hes repeatedly said that his supporters will be very happy with his decision.

A campaign announcement likely isnt imminent. In an interview with Fox News published in early November, Trump said that he will probably wait until after the 2022 midterm elections to announce whether or not hell make another run for the White House.

If he does jump into the race, hed start off as the instant favorite to win the nomination at least for now. A Politico-Morning Consult poll released in mid-December found that 69 percent of Republican voters want Trump to mount a 2024 comeback bid.

What About The Democrats

Donald Trump is ‘probably going to run’ for president again

Democratic President Joe Biden has said he plans to seek a second term in 2024, so there’s unlikely to be a competitive primary process among the Democrats. But even if there were, it’s unclear whether Iowa Democrats will continue to hold their traditional first-in-the-nation caucuses in 2024 and beyond.

The Democratic National Committee has spent months weighing the presidential nominating calendar, indicating it plans to impose changes. Iowa is a primarily white, agricultural state that has trended farther to the right in recent years. National Democrats say they want to launch the presidential nominating process in a state that is more broadly representative of the party’s base. The DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee has said it will make a decision after the midterms.

Us Sen Tom Cotton Of Arkansas

Cotton has been raising Iowa eyebrows since 2016 when he stopped to meet with the Iowa delegation at that year’s Republican National Convention. The senator has been a regular visitor since, making appearances on behalf of elected officials like U.S. Sens. Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst.

In July of this year, he completed his seventh visit to Iowa since 2020. He attended events in support of 3rd Congressional District candidate Zach Nunn, Grassley, Ankeny-area legislative candidates and the Story County Republican Party.

I think, obviously, Iowa and New Hampshire as the first in the nation caucus and first in the nation primary play a huge role for any person running for president, he told reporters. Maybe one day there will be a Republican nominee who doesn’t win in Iowa or win in New Hampshire, but I wouldn’t want to be the person that stakes a campaign on that.

Should Trump Run Again In 2024 Heres What Republicans Are Saying

While former President Donald Trump remains a commanding force within the GOP over a year after departing office, his provocative demeanor has led some in the GOP to argue he shouldnt get the partys nod for the 2024 presidential election.

High-profile Republicans have been splintered over whether he should run, with a few outright spurning a second Trump stint, others actively courting it, and some sidestepping the question.

Here is a look at what some of the leading Republicans have said about a second term of Trump in the White House.

Bring it on

Sen. Lindsey Graham

Once one of Trumps loudest critics, Graham eventually transformed into a key ally of the former president, often playing rounds of golf with him behind the scenes and lauding his policy achievements in public.

Graham recently declared he would be shocked if Trump didnt run again, and last year, he told a leadership conference for the Michigan Republican Party that he hoped Trump would seek the presidency in 2024.

I dont think Trump is listening. He might be. I hope President Trump runs again, he said.

Rep. Matt Gaetz

Gaetz is an avid backer of the former president, even teasing he could carry the MAGA mantle if Trump decides not to run.

Sen. Rick Scott

Following Trumps 2020 electoral defeat at the hands of President Joe Biden, Scott told Fox Business host Stuart Varney that Trump had a good four years and ought to do it again, Florida Politicsreported.
