How The Rnc Is Explaining The Decision
Some Trump critics have found it amusing that the GOPs reused 2016 platform has language that now can be read as criticizing President Trump himself.
The platform complains, for instance, that for the past 8 years America has been led in the wrong direction and that our standing in world affairs has declined significantly. It also declares that the President has been regulating to death a free market economy that he does not like and does not understand and that he defies the laws of the United States.
Of course, read more generously, much of the old platform does remain relevant, like support for the Second Amendment, less regulation, and cracking down on unauthorized immigration. Republicans still believe all these things and havent changed their views in the past four years.
Even so, perhaps in response to negative coverage about the lack of a new platform, the Trump campaign released a second-term agenda that currently is composed of a few dozen bullet points, like Create 1 Million New Small Businesses, without further elaboration or complete sentences.
Meanwhile, the RNC released a resolution about the platform decision which itself makes for somewhat interesting reading.
For one, the RNC says its not writing a new platform in appreciation of the fact that it did not want a small contingent of delegates formulating a new platform without the breadth of perspectives within the ever-growing Republican movement.

Broadcast And Media Coverage
It was announced August 2, 2020, that reporters would not be permitted on-site during the delegate business in Charlotte, but that the convention would, however, be live-streamed. This would mark the first time in modern history that the media will not be granted access to the nominating event of a major party candidate. However, the Republican National Committee walked this back, saying that the decision to bar reporters from entry had not been made final. On August 5, President Trump stated that the convention, in fact, would be open to the press.

The Republican National Committee has officially selected Charlotte, North Carolina, as the site of its 2020 Republican National Convention.
The decision, made Friday at the groups annual summer meeting in Austin, Texas, marks the end of a yearlong search for the site at which the party will likely tap President Donald Trump for a second term.
We look forward to seeing the Queen City take center stage as the Republican Party re-nominates President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence to continue fighting for the American people, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said in a statement.
An RNC panel earlier in the week recommended Charlotte over Las Vegas, citing the North Carolina citys large number of hotel rooms, major airport and demonstrated fundraising ability.
Charlotte has so much to offer, and we are excited to bring delegates to a city that has demonstrated its southern hospitality, showcased its vibrant energy, and proven that possibilities are endless, RNC Site Selection Chairman Ron Kaufman said in a statement.
However, not everyone was on board.

Ok So Where Will Trump Be
Trump has been involved in some regard each day of the convention, either in person or in recorded videos. He will accept the nomination in a “real speech on Thursday”, live from the White House.
This hasn’t been entirely well received – with critics arguing using federal property for a campaign speech is unethical.
Location Of Trump’s Acceptance Speech
On July 28, Trump said that he would accept the nomination in person in Charlotte. However, on August 5, he said he would “likely” accept the Republican nomination from the White House. A decision to accept a party’s nomination from the White House would break a norm the Associated Press noted that it would “mark an unprecedented use of federal property for partisan political purposes.” The proposed plans also raised legal questions under the Hatch Act, which creates certain prohibitions on the use of public resources for political activity, and the legality of the plan was questioned by Republican senators Ron Johnson and John Thune. While the president is exempt from the Hatch Act’s restrictions, the law applies to other federal employees. The ethics director of the Campaign Legal Center stated that “any federal employee who helps facilitate the acceptance speech risks violating the Hatch Act.”Nonetheless, Trump tweeted that he had decided to hold it on the White House lawn anyway, announcing on August 13 that he had finalized this decision. It was ultimately decided that Trump’s speech would be delivered from the South Lawn.
Since Trump accepted his nomination remotely, it was the first time a Republican nominee has done so since Alf Landon in 1936. Since Democratic nominee Joe Biden also accepted the Democratic nomination remotely 2020 was the first election since 1928 in which neither major-party nominee accepted their nominations in-person.

Al Sharpton‘s National Action Network initially had gotten the permits to have a large march and rally of up to 100,000 people in the National Mall for August 28, with earlier events taking place in the days just before. This was well before the Republicans’ convention was moved to the city.
Relocation To Jacksonville And Reversal
On May 25, 2020, Trump raised the possibility of moving the convention out of Charlotte after North Carolina governor Roy Cooper stated that the convention would need to be scaled down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On June 2, 2020, after weeks of failed negotiations, Governor Cooper rejected the plans submitted by the Republican Party to host a full-scale convention. Trump announced the cancellation via tweet, stating, “Because of , we are now forced to seek another state to host the 2020 Republican National Convention.”
RNC officials stressed that the mechanics of the convention would still be held in Charlotte. “The RNC’s Executive Committee has voted unanimously to allow the official business of the national convention to continue in Charlotte. Many other cities are eager to host the president’s acceptance of the nomination, and we are currently in talks with several of them to host that celebration,” said RNC communications director Michael Ahrens.
Republican National Committee officials reportedly considered cities including Atlanta, Dallas, Jacksonville, Nashville, New Orleans, Orlando, Phoenix, and Savannah, and even visited some of these cities.
On July 23, Trump announced that RNC events scheduled in Jacksonville, Florida, had been cancelled, saying, “The timing for the event is not right.” However, Trump also announced that delegate business will still continue in Charlotte.

The entire convention caps off with the president’s acceptance speech on Thursday night, which will be followed by fireworks at the Washington Monument, according to plans from the RNC, which submitted an application with the National Park Service earlier this month.
Medical professionals are advising on coronavirus-related protocols for live events, organizers said, but provided no further details.
Who will be speaking
In the lead up to Trump’s address, Republicans have plans for a mix of speakers, including GOP leaders such as Sens. Tim Scott, R-S.C., Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, former Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem and Florida Lt. Gov. Jeanette Núñez.
Reps. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., will also appear at the convention, Trump said earlier this month, referring to them as “warrior congressmen.”
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is set to deliver taped remarks, a campaign spokesperson confirmed to ABC News.
The list for guest speakers also includes Sean Parnell, an Army veteran and Purple Heart recipient who served on the Afghan-Pakistan border. Parnell is running as a Republican candidate for the U.S. House in Pennsylvania’s 17th District against incumbent Rep. Conor Lamb.

Why Trumps Team Initially Wanted To Rethink The Gop Platform This Year
Back in 2016, most of the delegates to the Republican National Convention were chosen while Trumps hostile takeover of the party was still in progress. And as Trump started to clinch the nomination, he mostly ceded the platform-drafting task to those delegates, a process that was dominated by conservative activists.
This resulted in embarrassing stories about how, for instance, the Republican platform had language signaling support for conversion therapy sending a child to therapy to try to change their sexual orientation. There was also a messy controversy involving a proposed amendment in support of providing lethal aid to Ukraine. Trump advisers helped defeat the amendment, and critics argued that showed they were too supportive of Russia.
Overall, Republicans had a fairly typical platform-drafting process, one in which various delegates are named to a committee and negotiations take place in a way thats guided but not always controlled by the presidential campaign. Its a process that seems a bit antiquated. The end product is certainly not optimally designed to serve the interests of the presidential candidate or to speak to voters.
