Prior To Going To War In Iraq Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld Optimistically Predicted The Iraq War Might Last Six Days Six Weeks I Doubt Six Months

Republican who lost after voting to impeach Trump speaks out

They were both horribly wrong. Instead of six weeks or six months, the Iraq war lasted eight long and bloody years costing thousands of American lives. It led to an Iraqi civil war between the Sunnis and the Shiites that took hundreds of thousands of Iraqi lives. Many Iraqi militia groups were formed to fight against the U.S. forces that occupied Iraq. Whats more, Al Qaeda, which did not exist in Iraq before the war, used the turmoil in Iraq to establish a new foothold in that country.

The Iraq war was arguably the most tragic foreign policy blunder in US history.

Speaker Pelosi On Capitol Attack: ‘it Breaks Your Heart’

“But the thing that is unforgivable about January 6 is the traumatic impact that it had on the people who serve our country,” Pelosi said. “Whether it’s our police officers, or the staff. Our staffs are young, idealistic people who believe in our country and that they should be hiding under tables or behind locked doors with people banging on the door to do violence to them, or seeking their bosses…”

Pelosi continued: “So when we came back from the undisclosed location, And I saw my staff, I saw in their eyes something I had never seen before. The trauma, the fear of it all.”

Explaining Kale

ADAM PLATT: Many things in Foodlandia, these days, have a political element to them, and if you want to emblazon a flag to be carried into battle, you could do worse than a bristly, semi-digestible bunch of locally grown kale.

ALAN SYTSMA: To eat kale is to announce youre a person who cares about the matters of the day.

AP: The idea of kale is much more powerful than kale itself. In short order it went from being discovered, to appreciated, to being something that was parodied. Frankly, Im all for the parody.

AS: The same thing happened to pork. Remember bacon peanut brittle? Bacon-fat cocktails? Theres bacon dental floss.

AP: Ahhh, bacon versus kale. The two great, competing forces of our time.

AS: Do you think one gave way to the other?

AP: What were really talking about is artisanal bacon, and the more sophisticated-sounding pork belly, made from pigs that were lovingly reared at upstate farms and fed diets of pristine little acorns. Bacon is the great symbol in the comfort-food, farm-fresh-dining movement, a kind of merry, unbridled pulchritude. Kale is the righteous yin to porks fatty, non-vegan yang.

AS: But pork has an advantage: People like the way it tastes.

AP: Thats a huge advantage, one that will hopefully see it through to victory.

A Year After Capitol Riot American Democracy Still At Risk Experts Say

America survived the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, but the explosion of political violence exposed the republics fragility. A year later, after an impeachment and amid federal investigations, the risk to Americas system of governance remains high, according to many elected officials and advocates.

Did Republicans Riot After Obama Was Elected

Former Trump press secretary Stephanie Grisham said Thursday that she’s part of a group of about 15 other ex-Trump officials who are developing a plan to try to stop Donald Trump if he decides to run for president again.

Grisham said in an interview on CNN that some of the officials in the group were both junior and senior to her in the White House. In addition to serving as Trump’s press secretary, she also worked as Melania Trump’s press secretary and chief of staff before resigning on Jan. 6, 2021.

The group’s members have held several video and conference calls so far. They plan to meet next week, with some in-person and some participating virtually, she said.

Grisham met Wednesday evening with the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack and said she cooperated fully.

Our Place In The World

Obamas election provided an almost immediate boost to Americas global image following the Bush administration and its entanglements in the Middle East. Americans themselves, however, grew more wary of international engagement during Obamas presidency.

In Germany, favorability of the U.S. more than doubled following Obamas election. In the United Kingdom, confidence in the U.S. president surged from 16% for Bush in 2008 to 86% for Obama in 2009. The Obama bump was most dramatic in Western Europe, but was also evident in virtually every country surveyed between 2007 and 2009.

The U.S. retained its popularity in Africa and parts of Latin America during Obamas second term. But the U.S. wasnt seen favorably everywhere. Russian views of the U.S. veered sharply negative in 2014 while the image of the U.S. remained dour in key Muslim countries. Meanwhile, certain U.S. actions under Obama, such as drone strikes, eavesdropping on foreign leaders and revelations of torture in the post-9/11 period, were globally unpopular.

Americans, meanwhile, have become less certain of their place in the world. The share of Americans who say it would be better if the U.S. just dealt with its own problems and let other countries deal with their own as best they can has risen 11 points since the spring of 2010.

Still No Suspects In Jan 6 Pipe Bomb Attempt

The FBI has yet to figure out who planted two pipe bombs the night before the riot at Republican and Democratic national headquarters near the Capitol. Agents report no breakthroughs so far, despite releasing surveillance video showing the suspected bomber that night on Capitol Hill.

Federal criminal charges have been filed against 705 people in connection with the riots, and about one-fourth of them have pleaded guilty. Judges have imposed sentences on roughly 70 defendants, and 31 of them have been ordered to serve time behind bars for periods ranging from a few days to just over five years.

The Supreme Court Is Stacked Against Democracy

A violent attempted coup 16 months ago failed to overturn a presidential election, but the racketeering enterprise that is the modern Republican Party has, by stacking the Supreme Court with partisan hacks, succeeded in defrauding Americans of their right to majority rule.

In a mind-numbing flood of rulings, an illegitimately constituted and brashly emboldened conservative majority on the Supreme Court this month rescinded a womans constitutional right to terminate a pregnancy, subverted a states right to control guns within its borders, breached the wall between church and state and eviscerated the power of the government to combat the existential crisis that is climate change.

The justices did so despite broad public support for reproductive rights, reasonable gun regulation, the separation of church and state and the urgent need for environmental protection. They did so disdainful that, across the street from the high court, witness after witness has been testifying to the seditious conspiracy to overturn the will of the people that was launched by a deluded president who appointed three of them and that culminated in the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

The intellectual inconsistency of the courts constitutional originalists is of a piece with the incoherence of Donald Trumps claims of a stolen election

So much for history and tradition.

So much for intellectual honesty.

As the religious-minded Supreme Court majority might say: Amen to that!

Biden Says Trump Republicans Have ‘spread A Web Of Lies’ About The 2020 Election

Jordan and McGovern have tense exchange over Jan 6 Capitol riot

Biden said in his speech that Trump has “created and spread a web of lies about the 2020 election.”

“He’s done so because he values power over principle because he sees his own interest is more important than his country’s interest and America’s interest and because his bruised ego matters more to him than our democracy, our Constitution,” Biden said.

He continued, “He can’t accept he lost even though that’s what 93 United States senators, his own attorney general, his own vice president, governors and state officials in every battleground state have all said.”

Biden said that too many Republicans are not standing against Trump and “seem to no longer want to be the party, the party of Lincoln, Eisenhower, Reagan, the Bushes or whatever my other disagreements are with Republicans.”

“At this moment, we must decide what kind of nation are we going to be?” he added. “Are we going to be a nation that accepts political violence as a norm? Are we going to be a nation where we allow partisan election officials to overturn the legally expressed rule that people are going to be a nation that lives not by the light of the truth?”

Political Violence In The United States Historically

Political violence has a long history in the United States. Since the late 1960s, it was carried out by intensely ideological groups that pulled adherents out of the mainstream into clandestine cells, such as the anti-imperialist Weather Underground Organization or the anti-abortion Operation Rescue. In the late 1960s and 1970s, these violent fringes were mostly on the far left. They committed extensive violence, largely against property , in the name of social, environmental, and animal-rights causes. Starting in the late 1970s, political violence shifted rightward with the rise of white supremacist, anti-abortion, and militia groups. The number of violent events declined, but targets shifted from property to peopleminorities, abortion providers, and federal agents.

The bedrock idea uniting right-wing communities who condone violence is that white Christian men in the United States are under cultural and demographic threat and require defendingand that it is the Republican Party and Donald Trump, in particular, who will safeguard their way of life.8 This pattern is similar to that of political violence in the nineteenth-century United States, where partisan identity was conflated with race, ethnicity, religion, and immigration status many U.S.-born citizens felt they were losing cultural power and status to other social groups and the violence was committed not by a few deviant outliers, but by many otherwise ordinary citizens engaged in normal civic life.

Biden Explains Why He Didn’t Refer To Trump By Name In His Speech

After Biden concluded his speech marking the Capitol riot anniversary, he explained to reporters why he decided not to mention Trump by name.

“I think we just have to face the facts of what happened, draw a clear picture for American people,” he said as he was departing the Capitol. “It’s not about me. It’s not about the vice president. It really isnt. That’s the thing that bothers me most about this sort of attitude that seems to be emerging to some degree in American politics: ‘It’s not about you. It’s about me.'”

He continued, “It’s about the system and about somebody who decides to put himself above everything. And so, but I did not want to turn it into a contemporary political battle between me and the president. It’s way beyond that. It’s way beyond that.”

In his remarks from Statuary Hall, Biden repeatedly identified his predecessor as “the former president” rather than by name. Likewise, former President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, as the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, would often not refer to Trump by name.

Transcript Of Trumps Speech At Rally Before Us Capitol Riot

President Donald Trump spoke at a rally near the White House on Jan. 6 before a mob of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol to try to stop Congress from certifying President-elect Joe Bidens victory. Trump was impeached Wednesday by the U.S. House on a single charge of incitement of insurrection.

Heres a transcript of Trumps Jan. 6 speech:

Well, thank you very much. This is incredible.

Media will not show the magnitude of this crowd. Even I, when I turned on today, I looked, and I saw thousands of people here. But you dont see hundreds of thousands of people behind you because they dont want to show that.

We have hundreds of thousands of people here and I just want them to be recognized by the fake news media. Turn your cameras please and show whats really happening out here because these people are not going to take it any longer. Theyre not going to take it any longer. Go ahead. Turn your cameras, please. Would you show? They came from all over the world, actually, but they came from all over our country.

I just really want to see what they do. I just want to see how they covered. Ive never seen anything like it. But it would be really great if we could be covered fairly by the media. The media is the biggest problem we have as far as Im concerned, single biggest problem. The fake news and the Big tech.

We will not let them silence your voices. Were not going to let it happen, Im not going to let it happen.

Thank you.

Pelosi Says Jan 6 Was ‘as If Somebody In The White House Dropped A Bomb’ On Congress

Did Republicans Riot After Obama Was Elected

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Thursday reflected on her experience a year ago as the mob of Trump supporters violently breached the Capitol.

In an interview that will air Thursday evening on “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt,” she recalled initially brushing off members of security in the House chamber telling her that she needed to evacuate, not realizing the seriousness of the threat. They were adamant, however, that she had to leave. Security whisked her away to an undisclosed location and that’s when she saw visuals of the situation outside and inside the Capitol.

“It breaks your heart its as if somebody in the White House dropped a bomb on the Congress of the United States,” Pelosi said.

Watch the full interview on “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt” at 6:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. CT.

Asked about her most memorable point of Jan. 6, Pelosi paused for a few moments and described the trauma of the entire day. She expressed shock about the Confederate flags being waved outside and inside the Capitol violence against police officers by those who profess to support law enforcement the noose hung on the grounds and chants of wanting to hang Vice President Mike Pence and shoot the House speaker.

Obama Bush Clinton Carter All Condemn The Trump Supporter Riots

Former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter on Wednesday each condemned the mob of rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol and lawmakers who sought to delegitimize the presidential election results beforehand.

It is a sickening and heartbreaking sight, Bush said in a statement. This is how election results are disputed in a banana republic not our democratic republic.

Obama said the insurrection, in which at least one person died, will be remembered as a moment of great dishonor and shame and that his successor, President Donald Trump, is culpable. He also faulted the Republican Party and the right-wing media ecosystem for the role they played in casting doubt on the integrity of recent elections.

Their fantasy narrative has spiraled further and further from reality, and it builds upon years of sown resentments, Obama said in a statement. Now were seeing the consequences, whipped up into a violent crescendo.

Bush similarly said the rioters who breached the building and remained there for hours were inflamed by falsehoods and false hopes.

Bush also urged people upset about the recent elections to stand down for the sake of American democracy.

Analysis: Could This Be Biden’s Unofficial Re

If there is to be a Biden-Trump rematch in November 2024, Democrats will be able to look back at Thursday as the day their man fully joined the fight.

“He isn’t just a former president,” Biden said of Trump. “He’s a defeated former president.”

In his most personal and political remarks since taking office, Biden repeatedly took aim at Trump for watching the riot unfold on television and “doing nothing” and for spreading lies about both the outcome of the 2020 election and its integrity.

“Heres the truth: The former president of the United States of America has created and spread a web of lies about the 2020 election,” Biden said. “He has done so because he values power over principle.”

Biden delivered his attack on Trump from the Capitol in a made-for-viral-clips address memorializing the anniversary of a riot that has parallels to the violent 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Va., that Biden said informed his decision to run in 2020.

If the political implications of his speech weren’t clear from his rhetorical shots at Trump, Biden repeated the theme of his 2020 campaign near the end of his remarks: “We are in a battle for the soul of America.”

House Democrats Trapped In Gallery On Jan 6 Serve Lunch To Capitol Police Officers

Teaganne Finn

The group of House Democrats who were seated in the House gallery on Jan. 6 served food to Capitol Police officers on Thursday.

“Gratitude is the antidote,” tweeted Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., alongside a photo of him handing out food.

Phillips told NBC News in an interview he had considered leaping from the observation balcony above the House floor to escape rioters. He was trapped with about 20 of his Democratic colleagues.

“I tried to calculate the distance down,” Phillips recalled in the interview, noting that he concluded that the risk of grievous injury or death was too great.
