Bloomberg’s Millions For Republicans Drawing Democrats’ Fire
He’s spent millions boosting Republicans and hundreds of millions more for Dems.
Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, whos made his major contributions to Democrats and liberal causes a central part of his pitch to Democratic primary voters, highlighted his efforts in Tuesdays debate arguing that, unlike others on the stage, hes achieved results.
“I have a 6-million-person organization around this country, Moms Demand Action, and Everytown,” he said to applause on the Charleston debate stage.
While hes also touted the roughly $100 million he spent to support House Democratic candidates in 2018, his critics seized on the millions he spent earlier in his political career to boost Republicans for the House and Senate.
“I don’t care how much money Mayor Bloomberg has,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., said during Tuesdays debate, citing Bloombergs contributions to several GOP senators to make the case hes out of step with primary voters.
“The core of the Democratic Party will never trust him. He has not earned their trust. I will. And the fact that he cannot earn the trust of the core of the Democratic Party means he is the riskiest candidate standing on this stage.”
Bloombergs super PAC spent nearly $3 million in support of then-Illinois Rep. Bob Dold between 2012 and 2014 as well as millions more in support of other Republicans running for both the House and Senate over the years.
Bloomberg also gave to former President George W. Bush and Rudy Giuliani.

Democrats are generally considered liberal, while Republicans are seen as conservative. The Democratic Party typically supports a larger government role in economic issues, backing regulations and social welfare programs. The Republicans, however, typically want a smaller government that is less involved in the economy. Mind you, most Democratic office-holders know this is general-election suicide: Just two years ago, 79 House Democrats voted against the Congressional Progressive Caucus budget that aimed to hike taxes by $9 trillion over 10 years and that was before the 2018 elections, when dozens of new moderate members won by appealing to the center.
And so would-be moderate Bloomberg aims to starkly raise tax rates on corporations, investors and individual high earners, not only rolling back many of the Trump tax cuts but boosting estate and capital-gains taxes while creating a 5% surtax on incomes over $5 million a year.
And his advisers say he might come up with even more revenue-raising measures and specifically said he didnt see the current $1 trillion deficit as an issue.
Which suggests that hell also be offering spending plans that compete with the other candidates, who are calling for trillions to go for a Green New Deal, Medicare for All and so on.
Yes, Mike Bloomberg has been a liberal his whole life, only registering temporarily as a Republican so he had a path to run for mayor of New York City. Hes always been pro-gun control and long wanted to spend big to combat global warming.

Does He Have A Chance
Mr. Bloombergs path is unconventional in the extreme: skipping the early-voting states and debates to focus on delegate-rich contests in March and beyond. He has the resources to pull it off millions upon millions of dollars of his own money to flood the airwaves with his ads. But if another candidate claims momentum in February, Mr. Bloomberg could have a difficult time breaking through.
Statements Concerning The Iraq War
In 2004, during a joint news conference with First Lady Laura Bush in lower Manhattan, he came to her support on the topic of Iraq, saying, âDonât forget that the war started not very many blocks from here.â
In March 2007, during a news conference in Staten Island, Bloomberg declared his strong opposition to legislation proposed in Congress calling for a clear timetable for troop withdrawal. He said, âWe ask our young men and women to go over and to fight, and if you have a deadline knowing theyâre pulling out, how can you expect them to defend this country? How can you expect them to go out and put their lives at risk? I just think thatâs untenable and that this is not a responsible piece of legislation. It is totally separate of how weâre conducting the war. Itâs totally separate of whether we should have been there. The issue that you asked about is plain and simple: Should the Congress pass a law forcing the president to withdraw troops at a given point in time? I think that is not something that is in the countryâs interest or in the militaryâs interest.â

Jackson said he doesnt know what Bloombergs intentions are in North Carolina, but he adds, I certainly hoped for help with the House caucus. We have such a once-in-a-decade opportunity. We need his help to take advantage of that. In whatever form he chooses.
In Georgia, Howard Franklin has similar expectations. He was a senior adviser in the state to Bloombergs presidential campaign, and he is optimistic that Bloomberg will fulfill his pledge.
I think he did set the bar high, Franklin said.
To make Georgia truly competitive, Franklin says, Bloomberg should make an eight-figure investment.
Georgia is another state with a lot at stake, as a longtime GOP stronghold that appears close at the presidential level, along with two U.S. Senate races due to a special election and competitive U.S. House races in the Atlanta suburbs. Its also felt the brunt of the two major crises of the year, the pandemic and unrest over racial justice.
Bloomberg is getting pitches like that all day, every day.
Although theres no evidence yet that he is spending all that he promised, that doesnt mean Bloomberg cant or wont in the remaining days of the campaign, now fewer than 100.

On June 20, 2018, Bloomberg announced he would spend $80 million supporting Democratic candidates in the 2018 midterms.

On February 5, 2015, Bloomberg made comments at the Aspen Institute and, while addressing issues of minority rights, policing policy, and gun control, Bloomberg had said that police should confiscate guns of African Americans between ages 15 and 25. “These kids think they’re going to get killed anyway because all their friends are getting killed. So they just don’t have any long-term focus or anything. It’s a joke to have a gun. While Democrats have tended to follow the Michelle Obama model , Bloombergs camp has no problem hitting back at Trump as a pathological liar about everything, including his fake hair, his obesity, and his spray-on tan. His social media strategy is often downrightweird.
Bloombergs theory of the election is unconventional, but if it works, it works. And there are signs its working.

Preservation And Development Issues
Bloomberg is a proponent of large-scale development. He has repeatedly supported projects such as the Pacific Park mega-development, the Hudson Yards Redevelopment and associated rail-yard development , and the Harlem rezoning proposal. On smaller-scale issues, Bloomberg usually takes the side of development as well. He favors the demolition of Admirals Row to build a supermarket parking lot. However, Bloomberg has occasionally sided with preservation, most notably in vetoing landmark revocation for the Austin Nichols warehouse. This move was widely applauded by architectural historians.
