Instead, Buffalo has already run away with the division, the Patriots are mathematically eliminated, and theyre not likely to give second-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham a start either.

Buffalo Bills Vs New England Patriots: Preview Odds Predictions For Week 16

Its been a changing of the guard season in the AFC East in 2020. What had the possibility to be a division-deciding contest between the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots in Week 16 on national TV, now feels like more of a formality.

The Bills are seven-point favorites against the Patriots inside Gillette Stadium, a place where Buffalo has won in just three times this century. Last week the Bills clinched the division title and now must win to remain the no. 2 seed in the AFC playoffs.

Since the last time the Bills and Patriots played in Week 8 – a 24-21 win for Buffalo – the Bills have gone 5-1 and have averaged nearly 35 points per game in those six games. If not for a low percentage Hail Mary conversion for the Arizona Cardinals in Week 10, the Bills might be going into this game without a loss since October.

So what kind of team are the Bills going to face in the Patriots, whose offense has been one of the most unproductive in the NFL this season? Quarterback Cam Newton has started 13 games this season and has just five touchdown passes with 10 interceptions. The Patriots have 20 players listed as questionable for this game and have felt the loss of several key contributors this season on both sides of the ball. Without Julian Edelman, Newton has struggled to get the ball to playmakers and the Patriots are averaging just 20.6 points per game, which ranks 27th in the league.

Buffalo Bills Vs New England Patriots

The rivalry between the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots is a rivalry where the power has shifted hands convincingly time and time again throughout the history of those franchises. When one team is at the top of their game, the other usually struggles to find their footing, thanks in large part to the fact that the Bills and Patriots play each other regularly during AFC East competition.

This iconic east coast football rivalry began in 1960 during the time spent by both teams in the AFL. After the AFL-NFL merger, the rivalry only intensified. Buffalo has sent all-time greats like Bruce Smith, Thurman Thomas, and Jim Kelly into games against the Patriots, while the Patriots have answered in the years since with the legendary combination of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.

The teams have traded the upper hand in this rivalry in just about every decade since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, with the Bills outplaying the Patriots in their matchups in the ’70s and ’90s, while the Patriots had the better of the ’80s, and everything that has come after the year 2000.

Bills Vs Patriots Score Results: Buffalo Dishes Out Two Decades Worth Of Revenge

For two decades, the Bills have been on the receiving end of butt whoopings at the hands of the Patriots. But Buffalo got some much-desired national TV revenge over its AFC East nemesis with a 38-9 shellacking over New England at Gillette Stadium on “Monday Night Football.”

The Bills completed the regular season sweep over the Patriots for the first time since 1999 the year before Bill Belichick and Tom Brady joined forces in New England. The 29-point defeat marks the worst home loss of Belichick’s career.

Leading the way for Buffalo was third-year QB Josh Allen, who added another stellar peformance to his breakout season. Allen completed 27 of 36 passes for 320 yards and four touchdowns, pushing his season total to a franchise-record 34 passing TDs, edging out Jim Kelly’s previous record of 33 in 1991.

Much of Allen’s maturation can be attributed to the addition of Stefon Diggs, who has arguably been the best receiver in the NFL this season. Diggs hauled in nine catches for 145 yards and three TDs, and is now the NFL’s leader in receptions and receiving yards .

Monday night’s game started off with the teams exchanging field goals on opening possessions to end the first quarter tied at 3-3. Buffalo went ahead early in the second quarter on a 5-yard TD run by Zack Moss, but New England answered right back as Cam Newton escaped the pocket and scrambled for a 9-yard TD to make it 10-9.

The Buffalo Bills stomped the New England Patriots 38-9 to put an exclamation point on their season and continue their great scoring run during the second half of the year. It wasnt just that the Bills won, but how they won, that was so great.

Bills vs. Patriots Week 16 Highlights | NFL 2020

The Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator has put together some great tape this year and molded a bucking bronco of a quarterback into an MVP candidate. Hes going to get a look by every NFL team with a head-coaching opening. He has the leading receiver in the NFL on his roster in Stefon Diggs and Josh Allen has set franchise records across the board. Plus he has a great lineage, including working under head coaches Sean McDermott, Bill Belicick, and Nick Saban.

Why New England Lost

The Patriots offense simply couldn’t keep up with the Bills high-powered passing attack. At one point, Buffalo scored a touchdown on four-straight drives . As the Bills scored 24 points at a frantic clip, New England scored just one touchdown and punted three times over that same stretch. When you fall that far behind, you’re forced to abandon the run, which just so happens to be the Patriots’ bread-and-butter offensively. When they needed them to do damage through the air, Cam Newton and the passing attack continued to be inefficient as they managed just 34 passing yards for the game prior to giving way to Jarrett Stidham in the third quarter and the game already out of reach. Even when the Patriots had what appeared to be a deep touchdown to Damiere Byrd at the start of the game, the ball bounced out of the veteran receiver’s hands. It was just that kind of night for Bill Belichick’s offense.

That said, it wasn’t just the passing game that contributed to New England’s ninth loss of the season. There was no answer for Stefon Diggs and the Buffalo running game was able to find success as they exploited both defensive tackle Lawrence Guy and linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley being inactive for this matchup. There were also some failures on special teams, including allowing the Bills to convert a fake punt on fourth-and-5 in the first quarter that ultimately led to a touchdown.

    Over Vs Underhandicapping The Total

Nothing about this total seemed attractive from the outset for this game, even before any number was put out. New England’s offense struggles to put up points and move the ball to begin with, a disinterested Patriots team isn’t exactly helping that cause.

But a New England team that feels like Buffalo’s taken them lightly and gets after frustrating QB Josh Allen with a takeaway or two can lead to quick scores as well.

Still can’t be certain New England’s offense cashes in for the full amount if turnovers happen, and that also means it’s a sloppy effort from this Bills offense that’s generally scoring 30+, hurting ‘over’ chances as well.

New England’s string of six straight ‘unders’ cashing will be tested with Buffalo being the best offense of the bunch they’ve seen there, and it’s also the Patriots first game at home in nearly a month which can be considered a boost to their own offense.

Too many cases to be made on too many sides of the story for this total for me to get interested in any of them.

The first meeting â a Buffalo win 24-21 â went ‘over’ the total of 41 that day, but Buffalo hasn’t scored fewer than 26 points in any game since then. The jump in the total from that meeting to this reflects that, so easy one to avoid.

Here are my hot reads from the Buffalo Bills’ 24-21 victory against the New England Patriots Sunday at Bills Stadium.

    Hottest topic

First, the Bills have firmly established their place as the new kings of the AFC East. At least, at midseason.

The Bills have sole possession of first place in the AFC East for the first time this late in a season since Week 13 of 1996, when they were 9-3.

Second, they finally were able to find life in their run game, which put them in position for the win that was sealed when Justin Zimmer forced Cam Newton to fumble deep in Buffalo territory with 31 seconds left.

On the Bills’ first possession, they ran seven times for 60 yards on a 10-play, 78-yard drive that ended with the first of two Zack Moss touchdown runs.

The Bills finished with 190 yards rushing on 38 carries, an average of 5.0 yards per carry. The total is the most since the Bills had 244 rushing yards against Denver in Week 12 last season.

    Bills Vs Patriots Prediction

Best Bet: Bills -7 and UNDER 46.5

They locked up their first division title in a quarter century, but the Bills still have plenty to play for with the second seed in the conference still up for grabs. And it would be nice to deliver some payback after years of being New Englands punching bag. Allen is having a dynamite season and could validate his status as league MVP with another strong game. The Bills dont need him to do the heavy lifting, though, which makes them a solid pick as a road favorite.

Pro Football Network: Bills 26 Patriots 19

Oliver Hodgkinson writes: “Monday Night Football represents a genuine passing of the AFC East torch. The Buffalo Bills wrapped up the division title on Saturday night, whereas the New England Patriots miss out on a playoff spot for the first time in 12 years. Although Josh Allen had his second-lowest passing yard total of the season in the first game against the Patriots, its difficult to believe that Cam Newton and the New England offense can go toe-to-toe with the Bills.”

    Clinching 2/3 Seed Is Big

The Bills clinched either the second or third seed with their win tonight, meaning they are going to avoid playing the Kansas City Chiefs all the way until the AFC Championship Game. We wont know who their opponent is going to be until late on Sunday, but they can beat any opponent and now they can choose to rest guys in Week 17 if they really want. With home-field advantage being less of an issue in 2020, it might be time to sit some key players in the season finale.
