Ar Maglock And Patriot Mag Release Pros And Cons
Both products install similarly as an addition to your already installed lower parts kit. They do not replace the lower parts kit but simply modify it so the magazine is fixed to the rifle until the upper is removed. The Patriot Mag Release contains a few additional screws with instructions to glue them into the mag release so that it is permanently fixed to the AR-15. This is important to note because the AR Maglock utilizes one simple screw that allows you to remove the hardware with ease. Should you want to remove the fixed magazine functionality from your AR-15, the AR Maglock makes it easier to do so.
As mentioned, the Bullet Button Patriot Mag Release kit comes in two different options with or without a rear takedown pin. The AR Maglock is only offered with a rear takedown pin. Keep in mind that the inclusion of the takedown pin in both kits adds to the cost of the kit.

Also to note with both kits is the placement of the mag release button. The Patriot Mag Release button extends under the ejection port cover and inhibits the ejection cover from opening all the way. Functionally, this isnt an issue but its important to note that the ejection port cover will only open to about 80% of the way. The AR Maglock is different in that it curves around so that it doesnt extend under the ejection part cover. An issue arises, however, if you have an anti-rotation hammer pin installed as the AR Maglock release button will interfere with the hammer pin.
One: Get Compliant With The Ar Maglock
The AR MagLock is a magazine release button that only works when the lower and upper receivers of an AR are separated. Basically, it turns your AR rifle into a fixed magazine rifle, which then allows you to legally have military-style features on that rifle. Some consider the AR MagLock to be a superior option over the original bullet button . This is because with the AR MagLock you no longer need to carry or manipulate an additional tool or bullet tip to release a magazine the user just needs to pull out the rear takedown pin in order separate the lower and upper receivers before you can release the magazine.

The AR Maglock and the Patriot Mag Release do nothing more then fix your magazine to your AR-15 rifle permanently . Both products do this the same way but have slightly different designs and can impact your rifle differently.
Bullet Button Patriot Mag Release Kit
The Patriot Mag Release is manufactured by the original inventor of the Bullet Button hence, the name of the company. Once installed, you are able to press the mag release button all you want but the magazine will not come out. You also have two kit options with the Patriot Mag Release one version of the kit includes a rear takedown pin with 550 cord that helps with quicker removal while the more basic kit does not include a rear takedown pin.
Very similar to the Patriot Mag Release, the AR Maglock contains a magazine catch, spring, mag release button, and a rear takedown pin with a metal O-ring. The rear takedown pin with O-ring helps operators remove the rear takedown pin and drop the magazine quicker.
Two: Get Faster With The Patriot Pin
The Patriot Pin is a clever product meant to speed up the process of conducting a magazine change on a fixed magazine AR rifle. Instead of having to physically pull out the rear takedown pin, the Patriot Pin is a lever that allows the user to simply push out the rear takedown pin with the shooting hand thumb. This allows the user to conduct a magazine change without having to take his shooting hand off of the pistol grip. Due to its simplicity, the Patriot Pins claim of being the fastest takedown pin removal system available goes unchallenged, and its users concur. Ar Maglock Vs Patriot Mag Release Comparison
If youre a California AR-15 owner then you know the laws that have been recently introduced and will go into effect at the end of this year. If youve been living under a rock and dont know what this law is, then allow me to give you a brief overview.
Essentially, any AR-15 rifle that was previously legal because it utilized a bullet button, will now be considered non-compliant and must be registered. Among other characteristics, the law states that any centerfire rifle with a removable magazine must be registered. As with most laws, there are other nuances to it but just know that if you own an AR-15 and it does not have a fixed magazine it will need to be registered with the state of California or it will be considered non-compliant as of December 31, 2017.

What Are My Options To Stay Out Of Trouble If I Own A Newly Defined Assault Weapon
1. REGISTER: A firearm that was lawful to acquire and possess last year but now is considered an AW can be registered on or before July 1, 2018. Once the registration system is active, you can register at: https://cfars. doj.ca.gov/login.do NOTE: Any AW may be âjointlyâ registered with another family member over the age of 18 who resides with you. But they must separately complete the AW registration.
2. MODIFICATION: You can modify your firearm so that it is no longer an AW. This can generally be accomplished in two ways:
A. âFeatureless Build:â If a rifle does not have any of the features listed in A-F above or if a pistol, , does not have any of the features listed in G-J, then it isnât an AW under the recent change to California law. Removing or changing all of these features may prevent the firearm from meeting the definition of an AW. For example, one may replace the pistol grip with an aftermarket grip like the âMonsterman Grip â pin or rivet their telescoping stock in place or remove the âflash suppressorâ or replace it with a muzzle brake.

The new design allows AR-15 owners to quickly “disassemble” their rifles in order to switch an empty magazine for a full one. Removing the pin separates the upper and lower receivers and an “ARMagLock” is pressed with the index finger and that will release the magazine. A small arm attaches to the AR’s rear pin. The new law passed in California redefined the classification of an assault weapon, which meant that AR-15s are now considered an assault rifle. California specific laws focused on outlawing “bullet buttons” which allowed AR-15 owners to eject spent magazines with a sharp tool. Outlawing the ‘bullet button’ meant that the only way to legally eject empty magazines would be to disassemble the rifle.

California Gun Owners: Get Compliant Or Register Before June 30 2018
California has required fixed magazines on assault weapons for some time now. Assault weapons include semiautomatic, centerfire rifles that do not have a fixed magazine, but have military-style features such as a folding or telescoping stock, pistol grip, flash suppressor, or forward pistol grip. Basically, this means the M4/AR style rifles are banned in California unless the rifle has a fixed magazine. In the past, the infamous bullet button, a magazine release button which required the use of a tool or bullet tip in order to successfully release the magazine, made the AR rifle California compliant and therefore not an assault weapon.
However, following some recent high-profile shootings, such as the 2015 San Bernardino shooting, California introduced Senate Bill No. 880 , which outlawed the bullet button. SB 880 amended the preexisting definition of an assault weapon and defined a fixed magazine as an ammunition feeding device contained in, or permanently attached to, a firearm in such a manner that the device cannot be removed without disassembly of the firearm action. For AR owners, this means that in order for your AR rifle to be considered a legal firearm, the magazine must only be detachable when the lower receiver is separated from your upper receiver .
California gun owners have until January 1, 2018 June 30, 2018 to either get compliant, register their AR rifles as assault weapons, or risk becoming a felon.
