Rf Controller Setup Up
Lastly was setting up the RF Control Unit in the RV. The controller also requires a 12-volt power source which was readily available in the dash of our Gulfstream. It powered right up, and I was able to adjust the force at the touch of a button. The gain defaults to 5, which is the middle setting regarding adjustment options. I set ours on 7 as our RV is 24ft and the JK is a four-door. If I had a 40-ft pusher and a Kia, Im sure a lower gain would be more suitable.

Installing The Patriot 2 Braking Unit
My next step was installing and testing the braking system itself. It is a simple process, to say the least, due to the lightweight design of the Patriot 2. The Blue Ox Patriot 2 is placed on the floorboard of the vehicle after the drivers seat has been pushed back. Using the included leveling feet on the Patriot 2, I was able to level out the unit quickly.
The adjustable spring-loaded clamp fit over the brake pedal with no issue. Then a turn of the locking knob made sure it wouldnt come off the pedal. I then adjusted the backplate so it would fit over the seat adjustment bar on the JKs seat. Power seats make this part much easier. Ultimately I got it to rest against the bottom of the seat itself. I then slid the drivers seat forward thus lodging the unit in place.

Unboxing And Review Of The Blue Ox Patriot 2 Supplimental Braking Sytem
Right out of the box, or actually in the box, I noticed the Patriot 2 supplemental braking system was lightweight and compact in design. Like a kid at Christmas, I couldnt wait to crack open the box and see what treasures awaited inside. I must say, I was impressed on how well the box was packed and could tell Blue Ox had done their homework when designing the packaging. We all know things can get beat up a bit in shipping, but our Patriot 2 was pristine inside when peering in.
Once I started pulling items out of the box, I noticed there wasnt much to the entire system. Said differently, there wasnt a million pieces and parts that had to be put together or installed on my RV or tow vehicle. When researching which braking system to purchase, this was one of the leading factors that persuaded us to buy the Patriot 2 in the first place.
I have two different vehicles I may tow with my Class C from time to time, so I wanted a system that could be moved from one vehicle to another. The Patriot 2 fit the bill perfectly. The only piece of the system permanently installed in the Dinghy is the breakaway switch. It is simple to purchase and install a second switch in an additional vehicle. That option made this system an excellent fit for me.

Do I Need A Tow Brake
In the United States, laws vary state by state with all states requiring tow brakes depending upon the weight of the towed vehicle or requiring mandatory stopping distances. For instance: Arizona requires a tow brake if the towed vehicle is 3,000 lbs. If you drive across the state line into California, a tow brake is required for towed vehicles weighing 1,500 lbs. Driving from California to Oregon again changes the dynamic. All vehicles towing a trailer or a towed vehicle in Oregon must stop within a specified distance. In Pennsylvania and North Dakota, tow brakes are required with no exceptions.
Canada requires tow brakes with no exceptions.
Having a supplemental tow brake installed helps prolong the brake life of the coach, if the coach brakes are doing all of the work to stop the combined vehicles, they brakes will wear prematurely. The coach will brake more easily and the stopping distance will not increase due to the increased weight of the towed vehicle.
How To Install The Blue Ox Patriot 3 Radio Frequency Portable Braking System On A 2021 Jeep Cheroke
Hey everybody, how’s it going Today, we’re gonna be going over and showing you how to install the Blue Ox Patriot 3 supplemental braking system here on a 2021 Jeep Cherokee. So a supplemental braking system is gonna be required by law in nearly every state for a vehicle over a certain weight. That weight does vary by state, but our Jeep Cherokee here is gonna exceed those in pretty much every state so it’s safe to say this is gonna be a requirement for your flat tow setup. In addition to the supplemental braking system, you’ll need a base plate, tow bar, wiring harness, and safety cables. But the actual job of the supplemental braking system is rather simple. It’s gonna be applying the brakes here in our vehicle so we’re not putting so much stress and strain on our motor home.
It’s gonna allow us to come to a much more safe and effective stop when we’re towing out on the road. So there’s really two main types of supplemental braking systems. We have the portable systems, which is what the Blue Ox Patriot is and then we have the permanent systems. Now, each of those are gonna do things a little bit better than the other. I actually prefer the portable systems because they’re not nearly as invasive as some of those permanent systems.
What Is Factory Force Setting For Blue Ox Patriot Supplemental Braking System
What would be the initial force setting on the Patriot. 3
asked by: Mike G
The factory setting that the Blue Ox Patriot part has for the force setting is 7. If your brakes are locking up at that number youd want to lower it.

Blue Ox Patriot Braking System
The difference between the Blue Ox Patriot and the Roadmaster Even Brake systems is that the Roadmaster part #9400 uses compressed air to actuate the brakes in the towed vehicle, while the Blue Ox part #BRK2012 uses an electric actuator to engage the brakes. The Blue Ox Patriot is simpler to install since it does not incorporate an air compressor and uses less power. Roadmaster suggests that due to the 15A power draw of the Even Brake system that every 6 hours or so you stop and run the dinghy engine for about 20 minutes to recharge its battery.

Review Of The Blue Ox Patriot 3 Radio Frequency Portable Braking System
Ryan: Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today, we’re going to be taking a look at the Blue Ox Patriot 3 portable Braking System. So, whenever you’re towing your vehicle, a braking system is a really important component. Now, many of those braking systems can be a little confusing and difficult to understand how they actually work. And that’s why some people are a little reluctant to get them whenever they are towing the vehicle. But then they get out on the road, they start going down some steep hills or some curvy roads and realize that they don’t feel as safe as they should.
They can feel the extra weight of their towed vehicle and having to rely on that motorhome to do all the stopping, doesn’t really put your mind at ease, and that’s where the Patriot 3 will come into play. It’ll make your experience much safer, your stopping more predictable, and it is extremely simple to understand and operate. So, talking about our braking system and seeing how it works is one thing, but how it’s actually going to feel, how you’re going to live with it, is a whole another story. So, what we’re going to do is just spin around the parking lot. We won’t be able to get up to high speeds or anything, but what we’ll be able to do is get a feel for it and see how the braking system reacts as we’re stopping. We’ll go ahead, put our coach and drive, and take it for a spin. What we’ll do is go ahead and pick up a little bit of speed as much as we can here, at least.

Review Of Blue Ox Tow Bar Braking Systems Brk2016
Today weâre going to be taking a look at the Blue Ox Patriot II proportional portable braking system. This is an all electric proportional system that results in synchronized reliable braking for your towed vehicle. What that means is that the brake pedal in the vehicle thatâs being towed by the RV is going to be depressed with the same intensity or at the same time as the pedal in your RV. This is a portable system meaning that you can easily remove it from one vehicle and place it in another one for a flat towing situation, so itâs not a permanent installation. Itâs easily portable. This part of the unit only weighs about 10 pounds, so itâs a nice lightweight design and it has the built-in carrying handle.
That way you can easily transport it to the vehicle or when youâre done using it, you can transport it to storage or to another vehicle.Itâs going to feature an electric actuator that requires less power than air pumps, that way you donât have to deal with the mess. You donât have any hoses. You donât have any storage tanks to get in the way and you donât have to worry about any type of leaking getting onto the floorboard of your vehicle. Itâs a nice compact unit. Again itâs going to feature that electric actuator.
