Service Engine Soon Light

2007

The check engine light is one of the most common symptoms of bad Coil Packs. More often than not, your engines computer will be able to detect bad Coil Packs in your Patriot.

There are several misfire related trouble codes.

  • P0300 this trouble code indicates that there is a random misfire. A random misfire means is that a misfire is detected, but the ECM is not able to determine which one it is coming from, or the misfire is occurring randomly.
  • P0301 through P0312- these trouble codes indicate that there is a misfire in one specific cylinder. For example, P0304 is for a misfire in cylinder 4 in the firing order. This makes diagnosing the misfire a bit more straightforward.

There are other misfire related codes as well.

How Much Does Spark Plug Replacement Cost

On average, spark plug replacement can cost anywhere between $100 and $500.

We can break down the total cost into:

  • Spark plug cost: while conventional copper spark plugs cost $2-$10/piece, premium iridium spark plugs can cost up to $100/piece.
  • Labor cost: you can expect to pay between $40 and $350 as labor charges, depending on your cars engine type.

The cost of replacing your spark plugs will also vary depending on the make and model of your vehicle, your location, and the brand of spark plugs you use.

Is It Safe To Drive With Worn Spark Plugs

Yes, but spark plugs that are worn enough to cause engine-misfiring have the potential to cause engine damage and overheating of the catalytic converter. Regardless of the age of the plugs, or mileage, if the engine misfires or runs poorly, the plugs should be inspected for defects. Generally, spark plug failure will not keep the engine from running, but in cases of extreme wear, you may experience a limitation in the speed at which you can drive the car. If the maintenance schedule says the plugs should be replaced, it is best to do so promptly.

Jeep Patriot: Bad Spark Plugs Symptoms And Diagnosis

Bad spark plugs can cause many problems with your Jeep Patriot. Bad spark plug symptoms may be subtle, or incredibly noticeable.

The basic design and task of the spark plug has changed little over the last 100 years. They sit on top of the combustion chamber and ignite the air/fuel mixture and start the power stroke of the engine.

Something that has changed about modern spark plugs is that many of them use iridium, dont need gapped, and can last for 100k miles with little issue. That being said, they still can go bad. The good news is, that if you do need replace them all, they are very affordable.

Check Engine Light Illuminates Due To Misfires

Replacing Jeep Patriot 2016 Spark Plugs

When one or more of the spark plugs start to fail or has failed in your Patriot, it will cause the engine to misfire and the check engine light may illuminate in the instrument cluster. To perform further diagnostics, you will need to connect OBD2 scanner to your vehicle. If you see any error code from P0300 to P0312, it indicates that there are misfires in the engine. However, it can happen that there are no error codes. In case of doubt, check the condition of the spark plugs and replace them if found defective.

How To Replace Spark Plugs In Patriot

If the spark plugs go bad in your Jeep Patriot, you must replace them with new ones. You dont necessarily have to visit a workshop to replace the spark plugs, you can do it at home by following a few simple steps. Before you begin, make sure the engine is cold to prevent burn injury.

  • Disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition coils.
  • Remove the ignition coils.
  • Remove any dirt or debris inside the spark plug tubes using compressed air.
  • Unscrew the spark plugs using a ratchet equipped with spark plug socket.
  • Check the electrode gap on new spark plugs using a gap gauge. Make sure the gap is according to the specs mentioned in the owners manual of your Jeep Patriot.
  • Screw in the new spark plugs by hand and tighten it up with a torque wrench.
  • Reinstall the ignition coils and their electrical connectors.
  • Check Engine Light Turns On

A worn spark plug can cause your Check Engine Light to turn on or keep flashing.

However, a faulty spark plug isnt the only reason why your Check Engine light illuminates. It can also light up due to spark plug wire or coil pack issues.

Since faulty spark plugs are a common cause of Check Engine light activation, it doesnt hurt to start by diagnosing your spark plug. You may encounter signs of mechanical damage or fuel fouling .

Transmission Bucking Caused By Bad Spark Plugs Yes

    post

Ignatz said:Uh, yeah, a lot of problems get blamed on the transmission that were in reality caused by the spark plugs. That may be part of the reason the CVT has a bad reputation. The other reason is that the Patriot owners manual implies the fluid is good to100,000+ which it is not. To say the plugs failed prematurely isn’t entirely accurate. Most cars today are running 100,000 miles plugs, but not our Patriots. Patriot plugs are only good for 30,000 in the first place, so 40,000+ is really postmature. The good news is that for $20 plugs are an easy DIY job.Now before you complain about 30,000 miles being short, for the first dozen of my driving years, 10,000 mile plugs were the rule.

    • There are two CVT filters
    • CVT fluid & filters should be changed at least every 50,000 miles
    • There are two thermostats
    • Plugs are only 30,000 mile items

    Accelerates Slower Than Normal

    2007

As you ask your Patriot for more power, the fuel and ignition systems respond. If acceleration has diminished, it should be felt. The less cylinders that your engine has, the more that one cylinder not firing properly will have. If you have one or more bad spark plugs, itll cause the acceleration of the Patriot to be weaker.

How To Replace Spark Plugs In A Jeep Patriot

The spark plugs on a Jeep Patriot are unusual from other vehicles as they are supposed to be changed every 30,000 miles. The factory plugs have a copper tip, which conducts electricity very well, but is so soft that it wears quickly. Fortunately, changing out the plugs isn’t a complicated task since everything is easily accessible. In this case, the project vehicle is a 2006 Jeep Patriot, but the process is similar for other years as well.

    Step 1

Pop the hood and locate the spark plug wires at the base of the cylinder head, right by the exhaust manifold on the engine. Grab the closest wire to you and pull it off of the plug using a twisting and pulling motion.

    Step 2

Install he spark plug socket onto the ratchet and extension, then unbolt the spark plug from the cylinder head. Pull it out and discard it.

    Step 3

Gap the replacement spark plug using the spark plug gapping tool. Slide the tool between the electrode at the end of the plug and the tip until the gap between the two matches the specifications listed by Jeep in the Patriot’s handbook that comes with the vehicle.

    Step 4

Install the replacement plug into the cylinder head, tightening it place using the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and spark plug socket.

Repeat Steps 2 through 4 for each spark plug on the engine, working one at a time so that you don’t confuse the plug wires in the process.

How Urgent Is A Spark Plug Replacement

If a spark plug or two is faulty, your engine will have to run on fewer cylinders and cant generate enough power. This condition, where one or more of your engines cylinders dont produce power, is known as an engine misfire.

An engine misfire can damage your catalytic converter, sap engine performance, reduce fuel efficiency, and cause irreversible engine damage.

    Thats not all.

A bad spark plug also fails to generate enough spark to fire up your engine. And as you repeatedly crank the engine hoping for a start, you may drain the battery dead.

In short, replace your faulty spark plugs ASAP to prevent engine misfires and start-up troubles.

What Else Do I Replace At The Same Time As My Spark Plugs

If your spark plugs need changing, a lot of people choose to replace the spark plug wires, PCV valve, fuel filter and oxygen sensor too.

Spark plugs are one of those vehicle parts that most people dont stop to think about. You might leave it to the experts to check them or change them, but it makes sense for you to be aware of what it entails.

    Different Jeeps Different Spark Types

2016 Jeep Patriot Spark Plug Change

Owners of older Jeep vehicles should go with copper spark plugs. Thats because they implement low-voltage ignition and might not be 100% compatible with the newer plugs. The good news is theyre pretty affordable and perform well in tough situations. In contrast, modern-day Jeeps with advanced engines will greatly benefit from iridium or platinum plugs.

Iridium is more expensive, but its more efficient and performs better than platinum . You should always purchase spark plugs that fit your Jeep. No matter how good iridium can be, if youre driving a vehicle that came out in the 90s, it wont be of much use to you. Checking the manufacturers specs is the best thing one can do.

How Do Mechanics Replace Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are threaded into the engines cylinder head. Most cars have one plug per cylinder, so a four-cylinder engine will have four plugs, a six-cylinder engine will have six plugs, and so forth. The mechanic will:

    • Have the correct spark plugs on hand for your vehicle
    • Pull any diagnostic trouble codes that may be related to worn spark plugs.
    • Remove the original spark plugs and look at removed spark plugs for any clues indicating engine mis-operation exists such as oil burning, excessively rich mixture, pre-ignition damage etc. Inform owner of any found unusual conditions.
    • Install new plugs using a torque wrench.
    • Finally, a road test of the vehicle to confirm normal operation.

Can I Drive With A Spark Plug Problem

The car will run with a spark plug problem, but it’s not wise to keep driving it this way. If a spark plug isn’t working, unburned fuel from the engine will get into the exhaust at a higher rate, causing problems for the catalytic converter. If the converter gets ruined by this unburned fuel, it will lead to a costly repair.

Religion has convinced people that theres an invisible manliving in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a list of ten specific things he doesnt want you to do. Do Spark Plugs Wear Out

    2007

Conditions inside an engine are predictably brutal. As much as modern engines are engineered and built to reduce friction among moving parts, friction and the heat that goes hand-in-hand with friction is unavoidable as cylinders get pumping. Depending on engine speed, spark plugs fire 1000 times or more every minute. Wear and tear is a real issue.

No matter how efficient an engine is, a tiny bit of material is left after each combustion. These deposits build up on the spark plugs over time, resulting in uneven performance and even lower gas mileage. In addition, the gap that a spark has to travel to ignite the fuel/air mixture gets larger and larger as the spark plug ages thanks to heat, particulates and normal wear and tear.

Thats why its important to have your spark plugs checked according to the manufacturers maintenance schedule. Superior materials may have extended the average spark plugs life, but they wont last forever.

Jeep Patriot: Bad Coil Packs Symptoms And Diagnosis

Bad Coil Packs are one of the more problematic ignition issues that can occur with the Jeep Patriot. A bad oil pack can make your Patriot almost un-drivable. Or it may have little effect at all on the engines ability to run. Itll get worse as they lose their ability to fire the spark plugs.

Coil Packs take the place of the distributor and coil in older vehicles. They receive instruction from the engines computer on when to fire the spark plugs. The symptoms of bad coil packs are almost the same as bad spark plugs. So much so that its actually a better idea to look at the plugs first.

If you do need to replace them all, they can be somewhat pricey. It is possible to isolate which coil pack is bad by using a multimeter. Heres a great YouTube video on how to do just that. This can save you a lot of money over just replacing the whole set at one time.
