Where Do Republicans Sit In Congress

Don't Miss

What About The Women’s Vote

Would The January 6th Committee Subpoena Sitting Members Of Congress? Yes, Says Schiff

Women have at best a mixed set of descriptions for Democrats right now, but use a lot of negative descriptions for Republicans.

Women are more likely to call Democrats than Republicans caring and reasonable but also give the Republicans an edge on being effective, and half of women call Democrats weak.

But most women call the GOP extreme.

And another of Republicans’ challenges with women: by two to one, women say a Republican Congress would make things worse rather than better for women.

That includes six in 10 women with college degrees.

And yet, in the 2018 midterms Democrats won women by 19 points today that’s cut in half. They won White women with college degrees by a whopping 20 points today, their lead among the latter is just six. There are a double-digit number of undecideds in this group, setting them up to be a key group to watch over the next months.

Why? The direction of the country, which they think is bad, much more so than how they feel about Biden.

So, will they switch or just sit out? There’s a gender gap on enthusiasm: women are less likely than men to say they’re very enthusiastic about voting, by double digits.

In all, this looks like a key factor in 2022, just as in the last midterm.

What’s The Impact Of Inflation And The Economy

It’s giving the GOP some votes and may depress Democratic turnout.

Republicans are leading among those who say inflation is “very important” in their vote, as well as those feeling “a lot” of impact from higher food and gas prices.

In the last midterm elections, in 2018, the party out of power also won the votes of those who said the economy was bad. The trouble for Democrats now is that far more voters today say the economy is bad and this time Democrats are in power.

Independents who cite economy and inflation as top concerns plan to vote for a Republican this fall. Independents who say the economy is bad break Republican.

Many Democratic voters share sour views of the economy, too, and while it is not making them abandon the party, it may make some stay home: Democrats who are feeling the impacts of higher food and gas prices are less enthusiastic about voting and less likely to say they’ll turn out. Democrats who say the economy is bad are less enthusiastic about voting than those who think the economy is good. those who rate the economy positively.

Gallup: Democrats Now Outnumber Republicans By 9 Percentage Points Thanks To Independents

I think what we have to do as a party is battle the damage to the Democratic brand, Democratic National Committee Chairman Jamie Harrison said on The Daily Beasts . Gallup reported Wednesday that, at least relatively speaking, the Democratic brand is doing pretty good.

In the first quarter of 2021, 49 percent of U.S. adults identified as Democrats or independents with Democratic leanings, versus 40 percent for Republicans and GOP leaders, Gallup said. The 9-percentage-point Democratic advantage is the largest Gallup has measured since the fourth quarter of 2012. In recent years, Democratic advantages have typically been between 4 and 6 percentage points.

New Gallup polling finds that in the first quarter of 2021, an average of 49% of Americans identify with/lean toward the Democratic Party, versus 40 percent for Republicans.

Thats the largest gap since 2012:

Greg Sargent

Party identification, polled on every Gallup survey, is something that we think is important to track to give a sense to the relevant strength of the two parties at any one point in time and how party preferences are responding to events,Gallup senior editor Jeff Jones told USA Today.

The United States House of Representatives, usually referred to as the House, is the lower chamber of the United States Congress, with the Senate being the upper chamber. Together they compose the national bicameral legislature of the United States.

The House’s composition was established by Article One of the United States Constitution. The House is composed of representatives who, pursuant to the Uniform Congressional District Act, sit in single member congressional districts allocated to each state on a basis of population as measured by the United States Census, with each district having one representative, provided that each state is entitled to at least one. Since its inception in 1789, all representatives have been directly elected, although universal suffrage didn’t come to effect until after the passage of the 19th Amendment and the Civil Rights Movement. Since 1913, the number of voting representatives has been at 435 pursuant to the Apportionment Act of 1911. The Reapportionment Act of 1929 capped the size of the House at 435. However, the number was temporarily increased to 437 when Hawaii and Alaska were admitted to the Union.

Ohios Rep Jim Jordan Is Ready For Republican Control Of Congress

US House Democrats stage rare sit

U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, a Champaign County Republican, discusses the potential GOP takeover of Congress with at an NFIB lunchon at Willoway Nurseries in Avon, Ohio.

AVON, Ohio – Republicans hoping to take over the U.S. House of Representatives in November, plan to roll out a plan that tells voters how they would wield their newly regained power, Rep. Jim Jordan said Wednesday, echoing a campaign strategy that helped the GOP win control of the chamber nearly 30 years ago.

Jordan told a Wednesday National Federation of Independent Business lunch meeting in Avon that his caucus will roll out its Commitment to America plan later in September.

I think a change is coming, Jordan said. I travel all over the district, all over the state, I travel all over the country. I go to Florida tomorrow, I was in Wyoming and Florida last week. People have had it and I do think theres going to be a change on November 8th, I really do.

Modeled on the Contract with America that Republicans led by Newt Gingrich used to take control of Congress in 1994, Jordan said the agenda will include passing legislation to address border security, reduce energy costs, repeal taxes imposed by Democrats, and address censorship that conservatives say they face from big technology companies. It will be a revamped version of a Committment with America plan that House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy launched two years ago.

Since 1: Contemporary Era

From 1970 to 2009, the House expanded delegates, along with their powers and privileges representing U.S. citizens in non-state areas, beginning with representation on committees for Puerto Rico’s resident commissioner in 1970. In 1971, a delegate for the District of Columbia was authorized, and in 1972 new delegate positions were established for U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam. 1978 saw an additional delegate for American Samoa, and another for the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands began in 2009. These six members of Congress enjoy floor privileges to introduce bills and resolutions, and in recent Congresses they vote in permanent and select committees, in party caucuses and in joint conferences with the Senate. They have Capitol Hill offices, staff and two annual appointments to each of the four military academies. While their votes are constitutional when Congress authorizes their House Committee of the Whole votes, recent Congresses have not allowed for that, and they cannot vote when the House is meeting as the House of Representatives.

While Protest Continues Voting Proceeds

An hour into the protest, House officials appeared to have cut off the Wi-Fi, in an apparent attempt to stop the protesting lawmakers from posting live videos.

At 12:55 p.m., Sprowls called members back into session and, as shouting continued, Sprowls unlocked the board to vote on the map and two other bills.

It is my belief that no members of this chamber should have the opportunity to shut down our process and shut down a job that members of the public and people of Florida have asked us to do, he said as his voice was drowned out by shouts.

We will be concluding our business today, he said to applause from Republicans.

As McCurdy and Nixon chanted, Stop the Black attacks, the House voted for the map 68-38.

The House Republicans then moved ahead with votes on two bills to remove Disneys special districts and its special treatment in a social media bill passed by lawmakers last year. The measures passed along a party-line vote to applause. Sprowls then adjourned the session at 1:02 p.m.

Within hours, the House sent all three bills to DeSantis for his signature, which is the final act needed to complete Floridas once-a-decade redistricting process. But it will not be the final chapter.

The Fair Districts amendments prohibit lawmakers from drawing maps that favor incumbents or political parties or diminish the voting strength of language or racial minorities.

Gop Admins Had 38 Times More Criminal Convictions Than Democrats 1961

Democrats top row: President Obama, Clinton, Carter, Johnson, Kennedy. Republicans bottom row: President W. Bush, Bush, Reagan, Ford, Nixon.

This is the first in a five-part series on government corruption and how that corruption is investigated.

Republican administrations have vastly more corruption than Democratic administrations. We provide new research on the numbers to make the case.

We compared 28 years each of Democratic and Republican administrations, 1961-2016, five Presidents from each party. During that period Republicans scored eighteen times more individuals and entities indicted, thirty-eight times more convictions, and thirty-nine times more individuals who had prison time.

Given the at least 17 active investigations plaguing President Trump, he is on a path to exceed previous administrations, though the effects of White House obstruction, potential pardons, and the as-yet unknown impact of the GOPs selection of judges may limit investigations, subpoenas, prosecutions, etc. Of course, as we are comparing equal numbers of Presidents and years in office from the Democratic and Republican parties, the current President is not included.

Were aware some of our numbers differ from other totals, but we explain our criteria below.

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you. Please please sit down.

Hello, hello, hello. Honey, whats your name? Well, let me tell you something. Is that your daddy? He owes you big for having to sit here. I mean, I we got we got to work something out, okay? Okay, because he owes you big.

And by the way, I like your hang on a second. Ive been wearing Ray-Bans so long, since 100 years ago when I was a lifeguard for years. Everybody made fun of me. Now, its very folks, its terrible, when youve been a United States senator for 36 years and Vice President for 8 years and a President, to be known for two things: Ray-Ban sunglasses and ice cream. What a dull person. But at any rate so, I like your glasses. Okay?

All right. But he owes you big. You let me know, okay?

Republicans Lead Race For House Control At Start Of 2022 Campaign Cbs News Battleground Tracker

The CBS News Battleground Tracker model finds Republicans start the 2022 campaign with a lead in the race for the House, with 230 seats to 205 seats for Democrats. The party with 218 seats controls the House.

Control of Congress is won and lost in districts, of course, so to bring you this estimate we’ve surveyed tens of thousands of voters across them all, and connected their current preferences to the 2020 Census, district data and millions of voter records to estimate seat counts. That makes it a picture of things today, not a forecast it’s July, not November.

Our accompanying survey this week gives insights into why things stand as they do, including whether the conditions for a wave could emerge because there isn’t one now and on the flip side, some real warning signs for the GOP.

How Are Party Leaders Elected

Democrats and Republicans Debate at Gun Control Sit In

Both parties in both Chambers hold meetings after the congressional elections but before the new Congress begins at the beginning of January. During these meetings, Members vote on their leaders. The House Republican Conference and Democratic Caucus both provide for a secret ballot, though the Democrats allow for a motion to waive the secret ballot. The Senate Republican Conference rules provide for a secret ballot as well.

Unlike the other House leadership positions, the Speakership is subject to a vote on the House Floor. To be elected, a candidate needs a simple majority of all votes cast, and the party leaders expect their rank-and-file to support them in the vote, regardless of who they voted for in the caucus. If the rank-and-file follow the leaders expectations, the majority candidate wins without a problem. And usually there isnt. Its been nearly 100 years since it took the House multiple ballots to elect a Speaker, and the last time it occurred, in 1923, has been the only time since the Civil War.

Liz Cheney Faces Vote To Remove Her From Republican Leadership

US Republicans are to vote on whether to oust one of their leaders, Liz Cheney, over her repeated criticism of former President Donald Trump.

On Tuesday she criticised her party for not standing up to Mr Trumps false claims to have won the 2020 election.

The top two House Republicans want her replaced with a Trump loyalist.

The move is seen as a sign Mr Trumps grip on the party is stronger than ever six months after he lost the election.

In an impassioned speech on the floor of the House of Representatives, Ms Cheney trained her fire again on Mr Trump over his unfounded claims the 2020 vote was stolen from him.

Remaining silent and ignoring the lie emboldens the liar, she said on Tuesday.

I will not sit back and watch in silence while others lead our party down a path that abandons the rule of law and joins the former presidents crusade to undermine our democracy.

Her fate is expected to be decided by a simple majority of House Republicans behind closed doors on Wednesday morning.

The Battle For The Senate

Where it stands now: The chamber is split in a rare 50-50 tie between parties, but, technically, the Democratic caucus has the majority, because Vice President Harris casts the tiebreaking vote.

What Republicans need for the majority: Just to net one seat. Thats it. Then, the Senate would stand at 51-49, with Republicans having a one-vote majority.

Where Republicans have a chance to pick up seats: Theyre eyeing at least three purple states where Democrats are running for reelection: Arizona, Georgia and Nevada. The good news for Democrats is that these are all states that Biden won in 2020, albeit not by much. The bad news for Democrats is that Biden won Virginia by a larger margin than any of these states and Virginia Democrats lost all three statewide races last week and their state House majority.

Candidates matter, too, and there its a mixed bag for Republicans. In Georgia, former president Donald Trump endorsed former NFL player Herschel Walker despite allegations of domestic violence against him one of several Republican Senate candidates with ugly pasts.

In Pennsylvania, the estranged wife of a top candidate, Sean Parnell, also endorsed by Trump, accused him of strangling her and hitting his young children. The head of Senate Republicans campaign arm recently wouldnt say whether Parnell is the right candidate for the job.
