When Is The New England Patriots Next Preseason Game

Don't Miss

Washingtons Defensive Front Vs Patriots Offensive Line

Patriots vs. Dolphins Week 18 Highlights | NFL 2021

Washington doesnt boast the depth along the edge we saw in 2020, but this is still a talented front seven. First-round pick Jamin Davis makes his NFL debut at linebacker, Shaka Toney gets to prove he was worth more than a 7th-round pick and then theres the Chase Young-Montez Sweat duo.

  • Patriots cohesion: New England is set along the offensive line with its five starters , but it will take time for the group to find chemistry. They will be put to the test against a young, explosive and powerful defensive front.
  • Rookie showcase: We may not see the stars much in this game, but that just means more time for the rookies. Its a great opportunity for Davis, Toney and William Bradley-King to make a strong first impression.

If Bill Belichick wants to give his starters along the offensive line more snaps, the advantage goes to New England. But, given the risk of injury, young talent and available playing time must be considered. With either outcome, this is a key aspect to watch.

Advantage: Washington Football Team

The bottom line: One important factor to keep in mind, COVID-19 will greatly influence player availability in this game. But whoever is on the field, theres a guarantee fans will see two great coaching staffs put their young players in the best spot to make a positive impression. Thats another part of what makes this Washington Football Team vs Patriots matchup fun.

How To Watch New England Patriots Vs Philadelphia Eagles Nfl Preseason Game

ByMichael Balderstonpublished 19 August 21

The Patriots and Eagles will kick off the action for week two of the 2021 NFL preseason.

The New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles have played each other in two Super Bowls, most recently in 2017 and with each team winning one. This preseason matchup between the two squads is a far cry from those games, but both bases of passionate fans are sure to have an interest in what transpires on the field this Thursday, Aug. 19.

Playing at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, the New England Patriots vs. Philadelphia Eagles game is the first for week two of the 2021 NFL preseason. Because of the new 18-game schedule for the regular season, it is also the second-to-last game of the preseason, which typically means starters will get a longer look.

Read on below for a game preview and how to tune in for all the gridiron action.

Week 2 Vs New York Jets

This was the first game played by any team since the . During the fourth quarter of a 103 loss to the Jets, Bledsoe was hit hard while running to the sidelines by Jets linebacker Mo Lewis. The injury to his chest would send Bledsoe to the hospital following the game. Tom Brady substituted for Bledsoe following the collision, completing five of ten passes for 46 yards, and was elevated to starter for the following week. During the game, the Jets appeared to lose a fumble to the Patriots, but the fumble was reversed based on a rule that would become controversial in the subsequent playoffs the Tuck Rule.

The 20 Colts were crushed 4413 following a brutal hit on receiver Jerome Pathon by Patriots linebacker Bryan Cox in the first quarter. From there Colts receivers shied away from contact with Patriot defenders and Peyton Mannings pass from the Patriots 22-yard line late in the first half was intercepted by Otis Smith and returned for a touchdown. The Patriots led 230 late in the third quarter before Manning ran in a ten-yard score, then in the fourth the Colts collapsed entirely, surrendering 21 points while managing just a touchdown to future Patriot . Tom Brady threw for 168 yards in his first start. This was the first matchup of the storied Tom BradyPeyton Manning rivalry that lasted for the next 15 years.

Cam Newton And Mac Jones Headline A List Of Crucial Players To Keep An Eye On When The Patriots Take The Field Thursday Night

Jim Davis/Globe Staff

Patriots football is back tonight, folks.

Well, sort of.

New England will face off in their first glorified scrimmage of the preseason against the Washington Football Team at Gillette Stadium Thursday night, giving everyone their first taste of actual football in a game setting.

Starters arent expected to play much, of course. The first preseason game is almost always dedicated largely to getting the regulars out there for a few series before allowing the backups to fight it out for their roster spots.

That doesnt mean there wont be plenty of interesting storylines to follow in this one.

For one thing, Patriots fans will get their first look at the re-imagined offense . That includes both Cam Newton and Mac Jones, who fans will get to see in game action for the first time, as well as new pass-catchers like Jonnu Smith and Kendrick Bourne.

The revamped front seven, with newcomer Matthew Judon and returning stars Donta Hightower and Kyle Van Noy, will also take center stage for a defense that should be much improved.

And as always, a number of backups will get their first big opportunities to show why they should make the 53-man roster or work their way up the depth chart will.

Here are five players to keep an especially close eye Thursday night, beginning with a two-for-one special everyone will be watching with rapt attention.

Week 1 At Cincinnati Bengals

New England Patriots vs. Philadelphia Eagles in preseason ...

The season got off to a discouraging start as the Patriots visited Paul Brown Stadium and were beaten by the Bengals 2317, surrendering 361 yards of offense, 104 of them on the ground by Corey Dillon. Drew Bledsoe failed to complete a pass in the game’s final two minutes he also failed earlier in the game on a quarterback sneak on fourth down.

New England Patriots Wide Receivers Vs Washington Football Teams Cornerbacks

One of the best parts about the NFL preseason is seeing young players get an opportunity to shine with positions on the depth chart at stake. Thats the case with both of these teams and there are additional storylines thanks to free-agent additions and trade possibilities.

  • NKealHarry watch: While a majority of the players in this game compete for spots on their current roster, this 2019 first-round pick will compete to attract interest from other NFL teams. After requesting a change of scenery, Harry can use the snaps he receives to prove he is an NFL-caliber weapon.
  • A nickel in Washington: Washingtons defense is set on the boundaries with William Jackson III and Kendall Fuller, but the starting spot in the slot is still open. Benjamin St-Juste, a third-round pick who grew up playing football in Canada is a player to watch.

There is going to be plenty of talent on the field in this matchup, even with top starters likely seeing limited action. New England will give us a first look at Nelson Agholor, Kendrick Bourne and Marvin Hall in their new uniforms. THeyll be challenged by Washingtons deep secondary, including Jimmy Moreland, Darrick Forrest, Troy Apke and St-Juste.

Advantage: Washington Football Team

Patriots Vs Eagles Matchup Preview

Things are drastically different for both the Patriots and Eagles from when they met in Super Bowl LII in 2017. The Patriots no longer have the GOAT Tom Brady and the Eagles have seen the departure of both their Super Bowl-winning quarterback Nick Foles and head coach Doug Pederson, as well as the oft-injured potential franchise quarterback Carson Wentz. After down years in 2020 that saw each team miss the playoffs , they are hoping to bounce back in 2021.

While the Patriots have said goodbye to Brady, they still have arguably the greatest coach in NFL history, Bill Belichick, so you can never count them out. Still, the biggest storyline for the Patriots is the quarterback battle between incumbent starter and former MVP Cam Newton and the rookie Mac Jones. In the Patriots first preseason game, both Newton and Jones had respectable, if not overly flashy, outings. Either way, the Patriots are no longer the proverbial favorites in the AFC East, as the Buffalo Bills are the defending division champs and will be most pundits pick to do so again.

Like all preseason games, it will be more about evaluation than actual results, but both the Patriots and Eagles have plenty to keep an eye on in this one.

Revisiting Our Preseason Patriots Predictions

Before every Patriots season kicks off, I make a couple of bold predictions for the team that year. I also like to send out the call to others at the station, for predictions bold or otherwise.

New England Patriots: 3 Losers From First Preseason Game

Isaiah Wynn #76 of the New England Patriots

The New England Patriots first preseason game of the season is officially in the books, with the team picking up a solid 22-13 victory over the Washington Football Team. It was great to see the team back in action in a game setting, and making it even better was the return of fans to Gillette Stadium to watch the action unfold.

For the most part, there was a lot of good that came from the preseason opener. The offense was able to move the ball pretty consistently for the most part, regardless of who was under center, and the defense did a good job of shutting down Washingtons offense.

Even in victory however, there are always plays that could have been run better or players that could have run them better. Even in a relatively low stakes contest such as Thursday nights, that was certainly still the case.

While preseason games are ultimately unimportant to the outcome of the season, they are vital for players attempting to make the final cut. We already took a look at two players who were the stars of the game, but now its time to take a look on the other side of the fence. Here are three players who came out of the first preseason contest as losers.

Eagles Vs Patriots Week 2 Preseason Preview And Prediction

ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Patriots came down to the City of Brotherly Love to hold a handful of joint practices with the Eagles leading up to their Thursday night preseason game. While these teams are now more familiar with one another, the on-field action projects to be gritty. There is no shortage of bad blood between these organizations or their fan bases after splitting a pair of Super Bowl meetings within the last 15 years.

Even teammates will be duking it out tonight, albeit not directly. Both squads still have plenty of work left to do sorting out their depth charts following a slew of new additions this offseason.

One key positional battle to watch will be the one for New Englands No. 1 quarterback gig. Head coach Bill Belichick has yet to officially reward Cam Newton, the incumbent starter, with the job. This has left the door open for Mac Jones, the No. 15 overall pick in the draft, to potentially usurp the veteran before Week 1 of the 2021 NFL season kicks off.

Dillard, a first-round pick in 2019, has the pedigree but has struggled with injuries, giving the 68, 346-pound Mailata a real shot at overcoming his seventh-round draft status and becoming a starter in Year 3. Whoever performs better tonight will likely gain a big leg up in their quest to become Philadelphias starting left tackle in 2021.

New England Patriots 3rd Preseason Game Halftime Thoughts

Like Taylor, this is Stevensons third week in a row as a winner. He registered his league-leading fifth touchdown of the preseason and continued to show off his elite footwork and ability to run between the tackles. Stevenson ran the ball five times for 23 yards and a touchdown where he bounced off defenders and carried the pile across the goal line. His strong camp and preseason should have the Patriots feeling confident heading into September. Stevenson is someone who can step in and take the pressure off of Damien Harris to carry the bulk of the load.

The Patriots Will Allow Under 100 Rushing Yards Per Game On Defense

ATLANTA, GEORGIA NOVEMBER 18: Christian Barmore #90 of the New England Patriots tackles Qadree Ollison #30 of the Atlanta Falcons in the fourth quarter at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on November 18, 2021 in Atlanta, Georgia.

After struggling to stop the run in 2020, the Patriots heavily invested in their front seven in 2021. The expectation was those investments would pay dividends.

In reality, there were two extremes from the run defense. The Patriots held their opponents to under 100 rushing yards eight times in 17 games, yet in the remaining nine they averaged 167.1 yards per game on the ground including two 200-plus yard performances. In total, they allowed 123.7 rushing yards per game, which ranked 22nd in the NFL.
