WASHINGTON During the last weeks of his presidency, Donald Trump and his allies pressured the Justice Department to investigate unsubstantiated claims of widespread 2020 election fraud that even his former attorney general declared without evidence, newly released emails show.
The emails, released Tuesday by the House Oversight Committee, reveal in new detail how Trump, his White House chief of staff and other allies pressured members of the U.S. government to challenge the 2020 election over false claims.
Officials at Homeland Security and the Justice Department, as well as Republican election leaders across the country, repeatedly said there was no pervasive fraud. Former Attorney General William Barr, a longtime Trump loyalist, was among those who said there was no evidence of such fraud.
The emails also show the extent to which Trump worked to enlist then-acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen in his campaigns failing legal efforts to challenge the election result, including suggesting filing a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court.
Those sent to Rosen include debunked conspiracy theories and false information about voter fraud. Trumps lies about the election helped spur on the mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 in a failed effort to stop the certification of Joe Bidens victory.
It didnt happen, and on Jan. 3 another Justice official wrote that the cause of justice won.

New emails and documents released by a congressional committee investigating the Trump administrations handling of the pandemic show the extent to which top White House officials interfered in the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions efforts to warn Americans about Covid-19.
The House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis has conducted interviews over the last several months about how former President Donald Trump and his closest confidantes, including former White House adviser Scott Atlas and son-in-law Jared Kushner, tried to steer the course of the federal response, sidestepping the interagency process.
On Friday, the committee released emails and transcripts with former senior CDC officials about the White Houses attempts to sideline the agency at critical moments at the beginning of the U.S. outbreak.
The emails and transcripts detail how in the early days of 2020 Trump and his allies in the White House blocked media briefings and interviews with CDC officials, attempted to alter public safety guidance normally cleared by the agency and instructed agency officials to destroy evidence that might be construed as political interference.
The CDC did not respond to a request for comment.

A bombshell email obtained by The Washington Post and CNN has unveiled new information on a scheme concocted by former President Donald Trump’s campaign in Georgia that involved getting fake electors to cast electoral votes for him.
The email, dated December 13, 2020, contained instructions on how the electors could position themselves to cast electoral college votes in favor of Trump, despite President Joe Biden’s victory in the state. Despite the plan, all 16 electoral votes for the state were cast in favor of the Biden-Harris ticket the following day.
In the email sent by a Trump campaign staffer, fake electors were instructed on how to infiltrate the Georgia State Capitol, sign certificates declaring they were there to cast the votes for the state, and ultimately defy the will of the state’s voters by voting for Trump instead.
“I must ask for your complete discretion in this process,” wrote Robert Sinners, the Trump campaign’s elections operations director in Georgia, per the outlets. “Your duties are imperative to ensure the end result a win in Georgia for President Trump but will be hampered unless we have complete secrecy and discretion.”

A year and a half after Donald Trump and his allies hatched the fake electors scheme, were still learning details that arent just amazing theyre also likely to be of interest to officials investigating the scandal.
The Jan. 6 committee, for example, has helped document the fact that the former president was directly involved in the plot. We also learned that Team Trump knew the scheme was illegal because the White House counsels office told them so. It also came as a surprise when Ronna McDaniel acknowledged that the Republican National Committee helped put the slates of fake electors together. We even learned that some Trump campaign lawyers distanced themselves from the scheme because it was so obviously dubious.
It reached the point last month that some local Republicans said they felt as if theyd been duped. We were kind of useful idiots or rubes, one former Trump campaign staffer in Michigan said. Asked if he wouldve volunteered to be a fake elector, knowing what he knows now, the staffer added, I absolutely would not have.
Its a safe bet that feeling was even more intense yesterday after The New York Times published this report.
According to the communications, which have not been independently verified by MSNBC or NBC News, those involved in the scheme were quite candid in messages they did not expect the public to see freely using the word fake and leaving little doubt that their plot was unlikely to withstand legal scrutiny.

Despite being delayed by years of litigation and politics by the Democrats, the wall is almost finished and can be quickly completed. Doing so will save thousands of lives, Mr. Trump wrote in an email on Friday, responding to recent White House moves to reverse his immigration and border wall policies.

A few hours later, he targeted Karl Rove, a former adviser of President George W. Bush, for writing an op-ed piece calling Mr. Trumps speech at CPAC hollow.
