On holidays, I would take out my laptop and sandwich myself between my parents, turning on an episode of Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj. It became our evening routine a way to connect through a show that was truly for us. I always laughed more than they did, but they would eventually ask for one more episode.

As Netflix renews shows like Riverdale and Love Is Blind, its difficult to hear that Patriot Act, one of the most unique and uncompromising shows out there, was canceled this week. The political comedy show, which aired on Netflix for almost two years and won an Emmy, two Webby Awards and a Peabody Award, felt like one of the most authentic parts of the Internet. Through its weekly episodes, Patriot Act drew attention to underreported stories, took risks and played by its own rules.

In a fractured news climate, it spoke truth to power. One episode criticized Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman after the murder of Post contributing columnist Jamal Khashoggi. The episode was eventually removed from the streaming service in Saudi Arabia. Another was seen as controversial for discussing corruption and religious nationalism in the Indian elections. This week, however, there is one less option: Netflix has canceled Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj, a show that superficially didnt seem all that different from its competitors, but with each half-hour installment, it proved itself among the best.

In 2020, it can be hard to watch these shows. As clever as the jokes can be and as deep as they can dig to surface under-seen issues, current events have become unimaginably bleak, and the United States political response to them has been more terrible than our darkest satirical minds could have imagined. This sort of programming feels like a relic from another era, the young liberal answer to Fox News, swapping out racism and invective for clever humor and fact-checked information. The ultimate purpose is the same, though: a receptacle for our collective anger, even if that anger was motivated by a desire for a more equitable world.

The first time I tuned into Patriot Act, I saw a familiar face in Hasan Minhaj. Indian Americans all know someone like him: beard lined up, hair slicked back, sparkling eyes, Jordans. He looked like the type youd expect to be successful. At that thought, I felt a bit of unease of course the conventionally attractive, blisteringly telegenic man is the Indian American that got a Netflix show but I kept watching.

The inaugural episode, on the Harvard affirmative action battle, was the first of countless direct addresses to Asian American viewers, but before it even began, Minhaj had a celebratory bar: We did it! We did it baby! Were out here! It had taken two years, he said, to make Patriot Act, a Netflix comedy show about culture and politics and the news hosted by an Indian American man, a reality. He then slammed that last part home: I was talking to my dad, and I was like, Dad, I cant believe it. Netflix gave us a show. And he was like, Great, you can finally save up for grad school.
