Saints vs. Patriots Week 3 Highlights | NFL 2021

Matt Johnson writes: “It feels very weird to see a Patriots-Saints matchup on the NFL schedule without Brady and Drew Brees battling it out. In fact, it will be the ifrst since 2005. New England is ascending and just spent like crazy in free agency. Belichick will prioritize stopping Alvin Kamara and thats a wrap for the Saints, as Week 2 proved.”

It writes: “Look at what the Carolina Panthers did to the Saints in Week 2. Alvin Kamara was contained and the Panthers made Jameis Winston beat them. Facing relentless pressure and with no Michael Thomas, Winston returned to his old habits. Bill Belichick is going to execute the same game plan and the Saints havent proven they can adjust.”

The New Orleans Saints bounced back against the New England Patriots, winning on the road 28-13 thanks in part to a stellar defensive performance. New Orleans defense picked off Mac Jones twice, returning one for a touchdown and the other inside the Patriots’ 10-yard line. Those two plays were the big difference in the game.

The Saints will finally get to play in the Superdome next week against the New York Giants, while the Patriots host Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next week.

Why Atlanta Falcons Will Win

Dont be stunned if Mariota is dangerous.

Hes got the experience and ability to at least keep the chains moving, and hes going to have to pull a few rabbits out of the hat to keep things moving.

On the other side, the Falcons need to get the pass rush going right away. The Saint offensive front is questionable going into the season its fine, but not amazing and the running game might not be there if Jameis Winston isnt finding ways to spread the short-range passing game around.

Through two weeks of the season, both New England and New Orleans have experienced ups and downs.

The Saints put together an offensive rout of Green Bay in Week 1 anchored by a five touchdown and zero interception game from Jameis Winston, who then regressed in Week 2, completing just 50 percent of his passes while throwing no touchdowns and two interceptions.

New Orleans has also struggled to get Alvin Kamara going as the star running back has just 121 total yards of offense through the first two weeks.

In New England, all eyes have been firmly affixed on rookie quarterback Mac Jones, who was named the starter prior the season and has put up solid, but not gaudy numbers, completing just over 73 percent of his passes with one touchdown and 467 yards through the first two weeks.

The Patriots defense has stepped up to remove some pressure from Jones, wracking up six sacks and five interceptions. That performance has allowed Jones to ease into his role without the need to put up massive numbers and keep pace in a high-scoring affair.

New England opens as just three-point favorites according to FanDuel, with a projected over/under of 42.5 points.

Both teams are 1-1 so far but in very different positions in the standings, with New England’s record good enough for second place in the AFC East while New Orleans is squarely in third in the NFC South, with both Carolina and Tampa Bay undefeated.

New Orleans Moves To 2

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The New Orleans Saints moved to 2-1 on the season after defeating the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium 28-13. Jameis Winston and Co. were able to jump out to a two-touchdown lead in the first half and that’s essentially all they would need to pull out the win. New England’s offense got off to an extremely slow start, beginning the game with three-straight three-and-outs and mustered just 13 nets yards of total offense in the first quarter. Despite those early struggles, New England brought the Saints’ lead down to as little as eight in the fourth quarter, but a 13-play drive that resulted in a Taysom Hill rushing touchdown proved to be the dagger.

Winston finished with 128 yards through the air and two touchdowns while Alvin Kamara led the team with 89 yards rushing. The New Orleans back also caught three of his four targets for 29 yards and a touchdown. Patriots rookie Mac Jones dropped back to pass 51 times in the loss, completing 30 throws for 270 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions. Meanwhile, Patriots captain James White was carted off the field in the second quarter and the back was later ruled out with a hip injury.

Second Week Without A Towering Tackles Protection

Trent Brown resided on the injury report as questionable after practicing in a limited capacity. But the right tackle, who exited seven snaps into the season opener due to a calf strain, would be scratched 90 minutes prior to Sundays kickoff.

Yasir Durant had started last week at the bookend spot previously occupied by the 6-foot-8, 380-pound starter. Against the Saints, however, it would be 2020 sixth-round pick Justin Herron getting the nod with incumbent linemen to his left.

New England conceded only two sacks to New Orleans, beginning with safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson in the first quarter and continuing with defensive end Tanoh Kpassagnon in the fourth quarter. But the pressure was felt in a myriad of hits and hurries on the Alabama product under center. And not just from the right side of the line, where Herron encountered NFL All-Decade selection Cameron Jordan.

Why New Orleans Saints Will Win

Where are the guys? Wheres the talent on Atlanta?

Its an interesting mix of players full of youth and potential, but it might take a little bit.

Theres not going to be much of a Falcon running game to worry about when Marcus Mariota isnt taking off, and the defense that allowed the fourth-most points in the NFL now gets a revamped Saint attack that added a maybe healthy Michael Thomas and Chris Olave to the receiving corps.

The defense has the secondary to clamp down on the mediocre Falcon receivers at least until Drake London gets going and again, theres not enough of a running game to make up for it. However

Facing A Prototype Back In Kamara

I feel like if you were to maybe try to build a perfect back, I mean, he essentially has everything you need, Patriots linebacker Donta Hightower said leading up to the meeting with Saints running back Alvin Kamara. Vision, balance. Hes strong. Hes tough. However you want to give him the ball, you can give it to him.

New Orleans did on Sunday. Kamara touched the ball 28 occasions against New England. Those occasions became 89 yards rushing and 29 yards receiving as the perennial Pro Bowler and All-Pro traveled into the A-gaps as well as open space.

Two carries during the games opening drive became a single yard for Kamara. But he got the ball in his hands a handful of times on the next drive, scoring an untouched touchdown reception from 11 yards out. No. 41 had 83 yards from scrimmage by intermission.

Marshon Lattimore on Win in Return | Saints-Patriots Postgame

Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels must begin to expand the repertoire of quarterback Mac Jones by testing the team’s prowess near the goal line. As such, he must allow his two tight ends to create mismatches and win contested catches in the red area. Pairing a traditional Y tight end likeHenry alongside a prototypical move tight end like Smith, should allow the Patriots to run 12-man personnel, featuring two equally potent tight end options. Combined with the blocking contributions of a sizable offensive line, as well as a capable running game, the Patriots will be poised to succeed in several play action schemes, should they choose to employ them against New Orleans strong defensive front.

Winston Limits Mistakes In Initial Visit To New England

Jameis Winston hadnt crossed paths with head coach Bill Belichick and the Patriots since Oct. 5, 2017. The former No. 1 overall pick out of Florida State was a Buccaneer then. And one who would turn to the air 46 times at Raymond James Stadium.

He visited Foxborough as a Saint on Sunday. From there, the quarterback would go 13-of-21 through the air for 128 yards and two touchdowns.

Winston found the aforementioned Kamara for a score and was at the wheel for three consecutive third-down conversions in the opening quarter. He then hit wide receiver Marquez Callaway on an above-the-rim throw in the end zone against nickelback Jonathan Jones. There was patience through off-coverage looks. There were no turnovers through under-pressure scrambles.

Against The Grain Of The Saints Ground Defense

The Saints landed in New England having allowed 66 rushing yards per game and 2.8 rushing yards per carry. Those numbers ranked second behind the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers, respectively, on the season.

And it would be up to Damien Harris to make those numbers climb behind an overmatched line. New Englands lead running back turned his first handoff into a gain of seven yards. But Harris went on to rush five times for 13 yards by the half. He rushed only once more.

The New Orleans defense had allowed a long of 16 yards on the ground through two contests. That held true on Sunday.

Why The Patriots Lost

New England’s offense simply looks lost at the moment. It started the game out flat and allowed the Saints to put up 14 points before it could even get into a rhythm. Its first first-down conversion didn’t come until the 11:34 mark in the second quarter and those issues offensively continued throughout the contest. Specifically, New Orleans was able to nullify the Patriots running game, totaling just 49 yards as a team on 2.9 yards per carry. Meanwhile, the tight ends and offensive line did fail Jones in his third career start. On the day, Jones was hit 11 times and sacked twice, which certainly contributed to his three turnovers on the day. As for the tight ends, they simply haven’t lived up to their free agent price tag as Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry combined for six receptions for 40 yards. Smith also had a ball hit him in the hands and bounce into the arms of Saints defensive back Malcolm Jenkins, who was able to run it back for a touchdown. Defensively, there were some breakdowns in coverage that directly resulted in points and special teams had a number of miscues as well. In all three phases, it was a poor showing from New England, who falls to 1-2 on the year.
