2008 Jeep Patriot.. BROKEN TRANSMISSION!

2008 Jeep Patriot

Jeeps sophomore effort with the Patriot was not without its issues. According to Car Complaints, the 2008 Patriot had 436 NHTSA complaints with reports ranging from sunroof leaks to transmission failure.

The bulk of the complaints is about the Patriots leaky sunroof. Numerous reports stated that water leaked through the Patriots sunroof. In some cases, the leaks would flow through the dash and radio and short the headlights. Some owners were even unable to drive their vehicle whenever it was raining – its that bad.

Transmission failure is another issue that you should keep an eye out for with the 2008 Patriot. At around 100k miles, several owners have reported that their Jeeps transmission simply went out.

Jeep Patriot 2008 Cvt Transmission Problems

Hello,

I have a 2008 Jeep Patriot with a CVT transmission. The car was recently purchased and seems to have problems with slippage. When I accelerate, the car revs up highly, the tack goes to nearly 4k but the car does not accelerate in unison. Also, going up hill seem to challenge it. Seems like its slipping. When I took it to the dealer, the service manager says its because its a CVT transmission thats the way it supposed to perform. Is this the normal performance for this type of tranny? Can someone suggest how I might handle issues with this tranny and getting the dealer to fix it? – Thx!

I doubt it. Fluid change and filter cleaning first step, magical additives next step, transmission rebuild 3rd step. How many miles?

I believe this is normal for a CVT. The transmission will keep the engine in the power band during acceleration. Here is a simple explanation of a CVT.

On the other hand the Patrot CVT does seem to have issues.

Nice post ed, 4k rpm sounds excessive but will admit new cars do new things I am not familiar with, but it seems you are. Thanks, I do not want to pass along any bad info!

The CVT transmissions in these cars isnt that robust so it is hard to tell if you have a problem or if you are just not used to the feel of a CVT transmission.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Bad Transmission For My Jeep

There are several tell-tale signs, but it all depends on your type of transmission.

jeep Manual Transmissions

The clutch system, which disengages the engine from the drivetrain to change gears, usually has the highest number of issues. Sometimes it just needs an adjustment, other times it needs to be replaced. If your clutch isnt the problem, its your gearbox. Common warning signs are:

  • Difficulty switching gears
  • Grinding or a crunching sound
  • Clutch slips or doesnt feel right
  • Burning smell or high engine revs

jeep Automatic Transmissions

Automatic transmission issues are far more complex than manual transmission problems because they have twice as many parts. In general, automatic transmission problems fall into four categories:

  • Car is slow to move after putting gearshift lever in Drive or other forward gear
  • Car doesnt move when you shift into a forward gear
  • Bucking and kicking when driving
  • Slowing down despite pressing harder on the gas pedal

How Do I Check For A Recall On My Car

In most cases, the automaker will send you a notice in the mail to announce a recall. But if youre the proactive type or if you bought the car used you might want to check for a recall yourself.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration , over 100 million new and used vehicles were involved in some sort of safety-related recall in 2014-15. Recalls vary in severity, but they all relate to the safety of the vehicle, so theyre all worth paying attention to.

Start by looking up the year, make and model of your vehicle on a site like KBB.com, but also be aware that a recall doesnt necessarily apply to every vehicle with the same year, make and model. Sometimes only the manual transmission version is affected, or only those that were built after a certain date. The best way to know for sure is to call the phone number that we provide on your vehicles recall page or go to the government NHTSA site and look up your specific car by its 17-character VIN number.

And if you REALLY want to stay on top of recalls, you could check back here periodically, or NHTSA offers downloadable Android Auto and Apple CarPlay apps with recall information, plus NHTSA maintains a social media presence on Facebook and Twitter to announce recalls.

Failed Self Diagnostic Cycle

2011 JEEP PATRIOT TRANSMISSION PROBLEM

When you start your Patriot, the ECM will do a self diagnostic cycle. If it fails the cycle, youll get a check engine light. This trouble code will tell you what part of the diagnostic that it failed, and youll have a pretty good idea of the appropriate action to take to fix it. Now, the check engine light can turn on for a lot of reasons. Almost none of them have to do with the ECM.

What Made The Jeep Patriot So Popular

Before we talk about Jeep Patriot problems, we should understand more on why it became popular. Why is it that even four years after it ended production, some people still speak highly of it? The main reasons for this were its cost, and what you get for the money. It was a Jeep, after all, and one that was priced accessibly for consumers. Plus, getting insurance on it was quite cheap, too. Yet, youre still getting the full Jeep experience, with plenty of practicality, and decent off-road capabilities.

There was plenty of luggage and cargo space, so the Patriot made a great family vehicle. Although not all models had 4WD, it was good enough for lighter use. However, its popularity also exposed some flaws in its inherent design. For one, Jeep made severe cost cutting measures to keep the price low. So much so, that technology and creature comforts were basic at most. This is despite the fact that similarly priced crossovers and mini-SUVs had better kit installed. Built quality was lacking, too.

Other Jeep Patriot Powertrain Issues

2008

Although this list covers the most reported set of problems with the Jeep Patriot, it is non-exhaustive. Other vehicle issues are as equally troublesome as the items above. Here are some of them:

  • Fractured transmission fill tube
  • Loud clunking noise
  • Burning smell from beneath the hood due to oil leaks or burnt plastics
  • Hot water coming from clogged A/C drain tube, causing waterlogging and transmission module failure

Most of the problems Jeep Patriot vehicles have are in its 4WD system called Freedom Drive, which connects to a Jatco-built CVT. Since the 2007 production model, this transmission has proven to have an unfortunate proclivity to failure. What makes this worse is that the transmission is rarely serviceable, which means an expenditure amounting to $5,000 for the clueless vehicle owner. A cheaper alternative would be a rebuilt transmission. But even that option costs between $800 and $3,400 .

How This System Works:

Your transmission is a complex system with a very wide range of components. Thats true whether you have an automatic or a manual transmission. With that being said, slipping is much more common in an automatic transmission than in a manual, so well focus our attention there. Really, the primary cause of slipping in a manual transmission is a damaged clutch, which should be replaced.

In an automatic transmission, everything must work in harmony in order to shift gears and provide power. The fluid level must be full , and it should be clean. You also have a number of clutch packs scattered throughout the transmission that need to engage at the right time. Transmission bands connect the gears together, and they can become worn or damaged over time.

If debris or contaminants clog up the system, or have blocked up the filter, its impossible for the transmission to work properly.

Tl the contact owns a 2012 Jeep Patriot. While driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle lost acceleration and the transmission warning indicator flashed. The contact coasted the vehicle to the shoulder and turned it off for approximately 15 minutes. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission failed and needed replacement. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 135,000.

Transmission Slipping Signs: Jeep Patriot

Jeep Patriot CVT Transmission Fixed jf011e whine noise service

A slipping transmission is pretty easy to recognize. Here are the most common symptoms that one has started to slip:

  • Higher RPM Than Usual When the transmission slips, it is not transferring all the energy from your Patriots engine to the rear wheels. When this happens, the tachometer jumps up as the RPM increases.
  • Smell As the clutches and bands inside the transmission slip, they create a lot of friction. This friction gets them hot and you may notice an egg-like smell.
  • Vehicle Wont Move Eventually the transmission may not be able to move the vehicle at all. If this is the case, the first thing to check would be the transmission fluid
  • Since the transmission will no longer be able to efficiently transfer power to the rear wheels, fuel mileage will suffer as the transmission slips.

Transmission Slipping Causes: Jeep Patriot

We have listed some of the most common reasons why your Jeep Patriots transmission would slip below. When trying to figure out why its slipping, its wise to start by looking at the transmission fluid. Even if you know its full, you can use the color chart linked to below to determine if something is going on in the transmission itself.

A Bad Alternator Decoupler Pulley

Jeep Patriot users should also be ready to deal with a bad alternator decoupler pulley. But unlike other issues on this list, fixing the bad alternator is easy as it doesnt require any special tools. It is also cheap to fix. Some of the signs of a bad alternator decoupler pulley are whining or rattling noise and charging system issues.

Do I Pay For Recall Repairs

Once the manufacturer has discovered that a safety recall is necessary on your vehicle, you wont have to pay anything for recall-related repairs. All the parts and labor necessary to complete the repair are paid for by the manufacturer . This is true even if you bought the car used or bought it from a private party.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • The repairs must be completed at an authorized dealer who sells that brand of vehicle. If you choose to use your own mechanic, you might end up paying the bill.
  • If you received a recall letter in the mail, bring it to the dealer. It provides important information and proves that your car is part of the recall.
  • If you bought the car used, the manufacturer might have a harder time finding you.

There is one exception to the fact that recall repairs are free vehicles older than 10 years old are outside the statute of limitation and usually dont qualify.

Is The Jeep Patriot Expensive To Maintain

2008

No, the Jeep Patriot is not expensive to maintain. On average, it takes about $596 to maintain a Jeep Patriot annually. This is slightly above average reliability for SUVs as they have an average annual maintenance cost of about $575. However, this car is cheaper to maintain than most of its competitors.

What Are The Worse Jeep Patriot Issues That You Need To Know

To have a better understanding of Jeep Patriot problems, well look through each model year. This goes from its first year on sale in 2007 and onwards. In a nutshell, the most serious of the Jeep Patriot problems that you need to be concerned about is the transmission. The Jeep Patriot uses what it calls the Freedom Drive. This is its 4WD system, connected to a Jatco-built CVT, continuously variable transmission. Using this, it can simulate the low range modes you get with a dedicated transfer case.

Therefore, you can more or less get a proper off-road experience with a simple road-going gearbox. However, this CVT has proven to be prone to failure and unreliability, even with regular servicing. This is the most severe fault listed by CarComplaints.com, and several other repair sites such as RepairPal. Other than transmission-related issues, the Jeep Compass is also subject to leaking. Some of the seals along with the windows, roof, sunroof, and so on could fail over time, causing water to leak into the cabin.

Those two the gearbox and leaking are the most commonly reported issues for the Patriot. That said, there are other small niggles that continue to plague owners of the Patriot. Here is a list of the Jeep Patriot problems, in greater detail
