Not too many years ago, Flushing, a neighborhood in New York Citys borough of Queens, was scattered with American-fare restaurants and run-of-the-mill shops.

Today, the street feels something like strolling through another country, where residents and merchants banter in foreign tongues, and characters that make up Asian alphabets dominate storefront signs.

Spurred by a wave of residents who sought cheaper housing than could be found in overcrowded Manhattan, an Asian-American community began blossoming in Flushing two decades ago. To cater to the growing clientele, grocery stores, restaurants, pharmacies and a host of other businesses sprang up.

Now, Flushing serves not only its own Asian-American residents, but on weekends attracts customers from Westchester County, Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut. They want to shop for Asian food and other items, or enjoy a meal at an authentic restaurant, but are unwilling to endure the impossible delays and parking problems inevitably associated with a trip to Manhattan.

Massachusetts has no law requiring alcohol testing, but five other states do. Drivers involved in fatal accidents in New Hampshire have no right to refuse blood-alcohol tests if theyre suspected of causing the crash.

The officer can actually, if need be, restrain the person physically while the blood is being withdrawn, said Earl Sweeney, assistant commissioner of public safety in New Hampshire.

Maine has the same policy, but it applies to all fatal accidents regardless of whos at fault.

We test anybody in a serious accident where death occurs or is likely to occur, said Kennebec County District Attorney Evert Fowle, head of the Maine Prosecutors Association. Its certainly called for by the law, and we do it.

Maine tests 77 percent of drivers involved in fatal crashes, second only to South Carolinas 94 percent. New Hampshire tested 32 percent, slightly above the national average.

But in Massachusetts, police can ask drivers to take a test only after theyve been arrested for drunk driving. Here, the number tested is less than 2 percent. No other state tests so few drivers.

Massachusetts has no law requiring alcohol testing. Police can only ask drivers to take a blood or breath test after they have been arrested for drunken driving.

Thats not the way in works in states where testing is mandatory.

Massachusetts leaves testing decisions completely up to police officers. Drivers can lose their license for life for refusing a test, but some are never asked.

Tips For A Successful Patriot Ledger Archive Search

When dealing with common names, it can be difficult to find the right person amidst 330 years of U.S. history. Thankfully, there are multiple ways in which you can avoid adding people to your family tree who have no relation to you.

The problem lies within the way records were taken before modern recordkeeping standards were introduced. A newspaper editor likely recorded information from oral sources therefore, they may have misspelled a name or made a blatant factual error.

Here are some more advanced tips for making sure you find the right ancestors via Patriot Ledger historical data:

    • Search for a relative by their initials. It was common practice for people to be recorded officially by the initials of their first and middle names.
    • Female relatives were often recorded via their husbands name. Rather than searching for a female ancestors name, try searching for their husbands name instead.
    • Use common misspellings. One wrong initial could mean you miss that forgotten family member.

It can be time-consuming but incredibly exciting to come across family members youd never heard of before.

The Patriot Ledger archive can add some color to the names. Discover your story. Be amazed at what you find.
