Patriots Steal Miracle 30

The 5-1 New England Patriots defeated the 5-1 New Orleans Saints on Sunday, with Tom Brady throwing the game-winning touchdown with just :5 seconds left on the game clock.

It was one of the most impressive moments of Brady’s career, when it looked fairly certain he would take a large amount of criticism for the looming loss.

New England took an early 3-0 lead, but the Saints marched down the field on their second drive, capping it with a three-yard touchdown pass from Drew Brees to Travaris Cadet.

The Patriots responded on the next drive, getting two big catches and a drawn pass interference call from Aaron Dobson. Stevan Ridley capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown run.

After another three-and-out by the Saints, the Patriots drove the length of the field, with Ridley once again capping it off with a touchdown, this one from four yards out.

The Patriots defense did a masterful job shutting down Jimmy Graham in the first half, holding him to zero catches.

The Saints opened the second half with a quick drive that ended with another red-zone field goal. On their next drive they would not be denied as Khiry Robinson tied the game with a three-yard touchdown run.

The Patriots broke the momentum with a 54-yard field goal by Stephen Gostkowski. The second half saw the Pats also lose both Aqib Talib and Danny Amendola. New England continues to be hit hard with injuries, to key star players.

Sean Paytons only victory against Bill Belichick is a fairly memorable game in Saints lore. During the Super Bowl season of 2009, New Orleans moved its record to 11-0 on Monday Night Football on the last day of November, as they scored 21 second-quarter points to open a 24-10 halftime lead on Tom Brady.

The Saints came back down to earth with a bump

The contrast between the Saints performances in Week 1 and Week 2 might be as wide as any team in the league this year. In the first week of the season, they defeated the Packers 38-3, with Jameis Winston throwing 5 touchdowns.

However, the Carolina Panthers humiliated them in Week 2, losing 26-7. The Saints could barely muster any offense. They managed just 128 net yards, while Winston threw 2 touchdowns and was sacked 4 times.

Perhaps the most concerning element was the lack of production from the run game in Week 2. Now, while the game script meant they had to abandon the run, an average of 2.8 yards per attempt on 17 plays will be a major cause for concern. The Saints may yet be ruing releasing Latavius Murray just before the season.

The Patriots need to see more consistency from their offense

Starting the season with a rookie QB, if you offered the Patriots a 1-1 record , they would probably have taken it. Losing to Miami is not ideal, but in Mac Jones debut, it would hardly be surprising either.

Losing the battle of the rookie QBs with Zach Wilson would have been more concerning for the Pats, but the defense ensured that would not be the case. New England forced 4 turnovers on Wilson, and the run game hammered in 2 touchdowns.

Three Things To Watch

1. Will any of the injured Saints defenders will able to play and put pressure on Mac Jones?The absence of two Saints defensive linemen and three linebackers left the defense lacking in the ability to pressure the quarterback last week. Nevertheless, the remaining players managed to sack Sam Darnold twice and hit him three times.

New Orleans may take the field in Week 3 without several defenders or at least see them limited. Cornerback P.J. Williams, defensive end Payton Turner, cornerback Marshon Lattimore, and safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson are listed as questionable for Sunday.

The Patriots’ have been inconsistent in protecting Jones in the early going. In the season opener, the Dolphins hit the rookie quarterback nine times, sacked him once, and forced a fumble from him. Last week, the Jets caused Jones to fumble once and sacked him three times, the only three hits that he took in that game.

Offensive Line Is A Disaster

The Patriots were expected to have a great offensive line this season, maybe even a top five unit. Instead, the offensive line has been a disaster through three games.

Right tackle was the problem spot in the first two weeks, but on Sunday, the whole line failed to protect Mac Jones. The rookie quarterback was sacked twice, hit 11 times and pressured on several other plays. His first career interception, which came in the second quarter, was mostly the result of him getting hit in the pocket as he went to throw the football.

Jones will not be able to perform at a high level if he keeps getting hit 10-plus times . No quarterback should be taking that much punishment.

Why The Saints Won

New Orleans responded well following a lackluster outing in Week 2 against the Panthers. On their second offensive possession of the day, the Saints moved the ball 69 yards down the field for a touchdown. As was the case for the bulk of the afternoon, New Orleans took advantage of the Patriots’ mistakes on that drive, particularly on Kamara’s touchdown reception where there appeared to be a breakdown in coverage. The Saints continued to capitalize, responding with a touchdown three plays after the defense was able to pick off Jones to go up 14-0 in the second quarter. Even as New England worked its way back into this game and brought the Saints lead down to just eight, New Orleans was able to step on its throats with a 75-yard touchdown drive in the closing minutes of the game to spoil any ideas of a comeback for the Patriots.

The New England Patriots lost on Sunday, going down 28-13 to the New Orleans Saints. It’s their second loss in three games, and while they struggled in their previous two games, this week was a whole new level.

They had issues everywhere, in every part of their game. The offense, as a whole, got bullied. Mac Jones threw three interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, and took some tough sacks. Jonnu Smith, one of the big ticket tight ends from the Patriots’record-breaking offseason, had four drops .

The Pats didn’t get any points on the board until late in the second quarter, when they managed a field goal. They did manage to score a touchdown their only one of the game in the fourth quarter, but the Saints immediately answered back with their fourth touchdown of the day.

That brings up the Patriots defense, which wasn’t brutal on Sunday, but still didn’t have an answer for the Saints. And the Pats had a leg up because Saints Pro Bowl offensive tackle Terron Armstead left the game very early with an elbow injury and didn’t return.

Nothing really went right for the Pats. That was pretty much clear from the start, and was definitely clear by the second quarter when the Saints blocked a punt and went on to score a touchdown.

Mac Jones, QB: Jones got the first win of his career last week against the Jets and now looks to continue his progress against a tough Saints defense. Jones is completing close to three-quarters of his passes but the lack of explosive plays and red zone finish have been areas to improve upon. The Saints won’t make it easy on the rookie, he’ll need his best passing performance yet.

Hunter Henry, TE: Henry has five catches for 73 yards through two games and saw his usage expanded in Week 2 as Jonnu Smith was dealing with a hip injury. Henry is quickly getting up to speed after missing a significant portion of time due to injury this summer. For a team looking to finish drives with more touchdowns, Henry should be a key component as he looks due for a breakout game.

Ja’Whaun Bentley, LB: Bentley had one of his best games last weekend as the fourth-year linebacker has made strides in the defense. This week his job gets even tougher going against Alvin Kamara, a versatile running back who can do it all. Bentley and the defensive linemen in front of him must make things tough for Kamara when he tries to run up the middle. Bentley’s physicality continues to be a big defensive key.

Patriots Struggle The New Norm

After three games, it feels like this push and pull between being functional and being bad is going to be the theme of the Patriots’ 2021 season. In their first game against the Miami Dolphins, they couldn’t score the game-tying touchdown two different times, instead settling for field goals. They were gifted with an interception in the fourth quarter and took it all the way to Miami’s 11-yard line, only to fumble. The Dolphins ran out the clock and won 17-16.

The Patriots faced the New York Jets in Week 2, which ended as a 25-6 win, but a team of manatees in helmets and jerseys could beat the Jets at this point. Zach Wilson is the most-sacked QB in the league, and he’d thrown five interceptions before Week 3 even started. Winning against the Jets isn’t a mark of quality, and good teams should dominate them offensively something the Pats simply couldn’t do.

There’s no reason the Patriots can’t improve. They used to start slow with Tom Brady all the time. Smith could stop dropping the ball. The offensive line could start protecting Jones. Jones could get his feet under him. The defense could start, you know, actually defending.

Until then, this is who the Patriots are. They’re a team on the bottom end of mediocre. And the only way that’ll get better is if the entire team improves together.

The New Orleans Saints bounced back against the New England Patriots, winning on the road 28-13 thanks in part to a stellar defensive performance. New Orleans defense picked off Mac Jones twice, returning one for a touchdown and the other inside the Patriots’ 10-yard line. Those two plays were the big difference in the game.
