Rep Sean Casten Aims To Fend Off Keith Pekau In Possibly Tight Suburban Race

A south suburban mayor is challenging an incumbent Democratic member of Congress in the 6th District.

U.S. Rep. Sean Casten, the Democratic candidate, is seeking reelection to a third term in the House of Representatives against Orland Park Mayor Keith Pekau, the Republican candidate. Casten defeated fellow incumbent U.S. Rep. Marie Newman in the June primary, just weeks after the death of his 17-year-old daughter Gwen.

Casten first was elected to Congress in 2018, a year that saw a blue wave with Democrats capturing the House of Representatives off the heels of backlash against then-President Donald Trump.

Heâll be fending off Pekau during a year thatâs expected to favor Republicans who many experts and political observers project to take back control of the House.

Presidential Campaign And 2011 Hints At Presidential Run

In 2000, Trump for nomination as the Reform Party candidate for the but withdrew from the race in February 2000. A July 1999 poll matching him against likely Republican nominee and likely Democratic nominee showed Trump with seven percent support.

In 2011, Trump against President Barack Obama in , making his first speaking appearance at the in February 2011 and giving speeches in early primary states. In May 2011, he announced he would not run, and he endorsed in February 2012. Trump’s presidential ambitions were generally not taken seriously at the time.

Voters in Illinois elected one member to the 6th Congressional District in the general election on .

Incumbent Sean Casten defeated Jeanne M. Ives and Bill Redpath in the general election for U.S. House Illinois District 6 on November 3, 2020.

Casten was first elected in 2018 after defeating incumbent Peter Roskam , flipping the partisan control of the district. Casten received 54 percent of the vote to Roskam’s 46 percent.

In 2020, Casten ran unopposed in the Democratic primary. In the Republican primary, Ives defeated Gordon Kinzler to win the nomination, receiving 71 percent of the vote to Kinzler’s 29 percent.

This race was one of 89 congressional races that were decided by 10 percent or less in 2020.

On June 1, 2020, federal law enforcement officials used batons, rubber bullets, projectiles, , and smoke to remove a largely peaceful crowd of protesters from , outside the . Trump then walked to , where protesters had set a small fire the night before he posed for photographs holding a Bible, with senior administration officials later joining him in photos. Trump said on June 3 that the protesters were cleared because “they tried to burn down the church and almost succeeded”, describing the church as “badly hurt”.

Religious leaders condemned the treatment of protesters and the photo opportunity itself. Many retired military leaders and defense officials condemned Trump’s proposal to use the U.S. military against anti-police brutality protesters. The chairman of the , General , later apologized for accompanying Trump on the walk and thereby “creat the perception of the military involved in domestic politics”.

Approval Ratings And Scholar Surveys

Trump was the only president to never reach a 50% approval rating in the Gallup poll dating to 1938. The approval ratings showed a record partisan gap: 88 percent among Republicans, 7 percent among Democrats. Until September 2020, the ratings were unusually stable, reaching a high of 49 percent and a low of 35 percent. Trump finished his term with a record-low approval rating of between 29 percent and 34 percent and a record-low average of 41 percent throughout his presidency.

In asking Americans to name the man they admire the most, Trump placed second to Obama in 2017 and 2018, tied with Obama for most admired man in 2019, and was named most admired in 2020. Since started conducting the poll in 1948, Trump is the first elected president not to be named most admired in his first year in office.

A Gallup poll in 134 countries comparing the approval ratings of U.S. leadership between the years 2016 and 2017 found that Trump led Obama in job approval in only 29, most of them non-democracies, with approval of U.S. leadership plummeting among allies and G7 countries. Overall ratings were similar to those in the last two years of the . By mid-2020, only 16% of international respondents to a 13-nation poll expressed confidence in Trump, a lower score than those historically accorded to Russia’s Vladimir Putin and China’s Xi Jinping.

Sen Maggie Hassan Retains Seat Once Viewed As Vulnerable

Incumbent New Hampshire Senator Maggie Hassan clinched her seat for Democrats in an election the GOP had hoped would bring Republicans closer to Senate control.

Hassan defeated retired Army Gen. Donald Bolduc during a race in which both Democrat and Republican strategists viewed her seat as vulnerable. Republicans had long had their eye on the seat as the potential flip they needed to control the Senate chamber, but as Bolduc emerged as the frontrunner during the primary, his radical views sparked concerns among party officials.

Bolduc suggested, for example, eliminating the FBI and ending the direct elections of senators. He trumpeted former President Donald Trumps false claims that the 2020 Election was stolen. New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu endorsed a different candidate during the Republican primary, conspiracy-theorist extremist.

Once he became the Republican nominee, Hassan hammered Bolduc on his extreme views and she held onto a consistent lead in the polls. She outraised Bolduc at an immense scale, spending over $31 million on her campaign compared to the $900,000 Bolduc spent as of Oct. 19.

Bolduc veered closer to center during the general race, walking back his 2020 election denials and eventually earning endorsements from both Sununu and Trump. In late October, the Republican Senate fundraising group injected more money into the race in a last-ditch attempt to flip the seat, which they had last controlled in 2017.

Democrats Had A Good Night In Governors Races

CNN projected Wes Moore the winner in Maryland and Maura Healey the victor in Massachusetts, two seats that are currently in Republican control. Democratic governors in Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, New Mexico and others are projected to hold their seats, while Democrat Josh Shapiro defeated Republican Doug Mastriano in a seat where Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf was term limited.

But as Tuesday turned into Wednesday, Democrats have a shot at strengthening their grip of governors offices across the country.

CNN projected Kansas Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly the winner in her bid for reelection on Wednesday morning, while Democrats are competitive in Oregon and Nevada, two states that would represent Democratic holds, and Arizona, a state that would represent a Democratic flip.

The night is far from an unmitigated victory for Democrats and how the three outstanding key races tip could shift the way Democrats see their gubernatorial successes. And some of the most famous Democratic gubernatorial candidates did lose: CNN projected Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams failed to unseat Republican incumbent Gov. Brian Kemp in a rematch of their 2018 race, and Texas Democrat Beto ORourke was unable to defeat Republican incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott.

But few Democratic operatives would have said weeks ago that they would be in line to have this kind of night in governors races.

Trump sought media attention throughout his career, sustaining a “lovehate” relationship with the press. In the 2016 campaign, Trump benefited from a record amount of free media coverage, elevating his standing in the Republican primaries.The New York Times writer wrote in 2018 that Trump’s media dominance enthralled the public and created “must-see TV.”

As a candidate and as president, Trump frequently accused the press of bias, calling it the “fake news media” and “the “. In 2018, journalist recounted Trump’s saying he intentionally demeaned and discredited the media “so when you write negative stories about me no one will believe you”.

As president, Trump privately and publicly mused about revoking the press credentials of journalists he viewed as critical. His administration moved to revoke the press passes of two White House reporters, which were restored by the courts. In 2019, a member of the foreign press reported many of the same concerns as those of media in the U.S., expressing concern that a normalization process by reporters and media results in an inaccurate characterization of Trump. Floridas Republican Governor Ron DeSantis easily won re-election on Tuesday night, according to the Associated Press, positioning him for potential national ambitions or a future bid for the presidency.

DeSantis faced Democrat Charlie Crist, who himself served as a Republican Governor of Florida from 2007 until 2011. With 80% of votes counted, De Santis had 58% of the vote to Crists 41%.

A rising star in the GOP, DeSantis defined his first term as governor with resistance to pandemic-era restrictions and brash right-wing stances on Americas culture wars. His funding vastly outpaced Crists, and he focused his campaign on criticizing Democrats for what he described as the woke agenda. Widely considered to be a future Republican presidential contender, the conservative firebrand made headlines this year for his stances on LGBTQ issues, handling of immigration policy, and investigations into alleged voter fraud. He repeatedly drew liberal ire and swallowed media cycle after media cycle, leaving Crist and his moderate approach largely ignored.

Misogyny And Allegations Of Sexual Misconduct

Trump has a history of insulting and belittling women when speaking to media and on social media. He made lewd comments, demeaned women’s looks, and called them names, such as ‘dog’, ‘crazed, ‘crying lowlife’, ‘face of a pig’, or ‘horseface’.

In October 2016, two days before the , a 2005 “” recording surfaced in which about kissing and groping women without their consent, saying “when you’re a star, they let you do it, you can do anything… grab ’em by the .” The incident’s widespread media exposure led to Trump’s first public apology during the campaign and caused outrage across the political spectrum.

Michigan Election Results: Democratic Rep Elissa Slotkin Defeats Republican In Key Contest

Rep. Elissa Slotkin

Incumbent Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin has defeated her GOP challenger Tom Barrett in the race to represent Michiganâs 7th Congressional District in the House, the Associated Press projects.

Both Slotkin and Barrett have experience with U.S. Military operations. Slotkin served as a CIA analyst and served three tours in Iraq alongside the military, while Barrett served in the Army and has served deployments in Iraq, Kuwait, Guantánamo Bay, and South Korea.

Throughout the race, Slotkin, who is seen as one of the more vulnerable House Democrats seeking re-election, attempted to maintain her distance from President Biden felt by those in Michigan and around the country.

Slotkin, who currently represents Michiganâs 8th Congressional District, and Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Mich., skipped President Bidenâs September trip to Detroit.

Asked in October during an appearance on NBC NewsââMeet the Pressâ whether she would support President Biden in 2024 if he sought re-election, Slotkin said she would support âthe sitting presidentâ if he chooses to run because that followed precedent. But she quickly called for new leadership âacross the Democratic Party.â
