Buffalo Bills 47 New England Patriots 1: Rapid Recap And Notes

What a beat down!

The Buffalo Bills dominated the New England Patriots tonight bludgeoning their perpetual tormentors in a 47-17 demolition that firmly established the Bills as the premier team in the AFC East.

Buffalo was in complete control in the first half. While they lost the opening coin toss, they received the opening kickoff and marched down the field to open up a 7-0 lead. Buffalo went 70 yards in nine plays, and they didnt even face a third down. Josh Allen ran for 41 yards on two carries on the drive, and he capped it off by trying to throw the ball away. Dawson Knox had other ideas, though, as he did his best impression of both Dwight Clark and David Tyree, snaring a leaping helmet catch in the back of the end zone to give the Bills a lead.

New England moved the ball well on their second drive, marching to the Buffalo 34 after just eight plays. Mac Jones made a few plays with his legs, scrambling for a gain of 16 to convert a third down, and also extending a play before rolling out and hitting Hunter Henry for 31 yards on another third down. On the last play of the drive, Jones lofted a beautiful ball into the end zone. Nelson Agholor had his man beat, but Micah Hyde came from Pittsford to make a gorgeous diving interception to kill the scoring threat.

The Bills are on to the Divisional Round!

Buffalo Bills To Play New England Patriots In Playoffs For First Time Since 1963

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. The Buffalo Bills will play their bitter rival in the New England Patriots in the wild card round of the playoffs in their first postseason meeting since 1963.

The Bills will host the Patriots at 8:15 on Saturday, January 15 following a Las Vegas Raiders win over the Los Angeles Chargers in the final game of the regular season.

These two teams last met in the regular season, the Bills beat the Patriots 33-21 in Foxborough, when Josh Allen threw three touchdown passes along with 314 yards in the win.

The last time the Bills and Patriots played in Orchard Park, the Patriots won 14-10 despite three passing attempts from Patriots quarterback Mac Jones.

The Bills have won four straight heading into the postseason, while the Patriots have lost three of their last four, including that December 26 game against the Bills.

Opening Training Camp Roster

At the time of the first public training camp practice at Gillette Stadium on July 24, they had the NFL maximum of 80 players signed to their roster. The Patriots received seven roster exemptions for the NFL Europe allocations of Dyshod Carter, Mike Malan, Mike Clare, Rod Trafford, Courtney Ledyard, Brad Harris, and Scott McCready. Additionally, the Patriots allocated offensive lineman Corey Mitchell, wide receiver T. C. Taylor, and quarterback Shane Stafford to NFL Europe and received roster exemptions for them, but those players were waived before the start of training camp. Finally, injured exclusive rights free agent Stephen Neal did not sign his tender until after camp began, and did not count against the roster limit.

Graham: A Night Bills Fans Will Remember Forever

Buffalo Bills vs. New England Patriots: Risers and Fallers

No matter what happens next, Bills fans will be crowing over what happened Saturday night for years to come. A frigid but full-throated crowd of 69,188 watched a Patriots funeral procession as Buffalo buried its archrival 47-17.

Josh Allen executed marvelously, posting a near-perfect passer rating. Buffalo scored touchdowns on each of its first seven possessions, did not commit a turnover, did not punt and did not attempt a field goal. That is an unprecedented NFL feat in the regular season or playoffs. Until a month ago, Bill Belichick had never coached a game in which an opponent didnt punt. Then the Bills didnt punt against him twice in four games.

Not unless it was some Pop Warner stuff, Bills defensive tackle Harrison Phillips said of recalling such a game.

I probably watched my son do it on Madden, edge rusher Jerry Hughes added.

Saturday was the most lopsided playoff victory in Bills history since they ragdolled the Los Angeles Raiders by 48 points in 1991 and the worst postseason defeat of Belichicks career.

The Bills outclassed the Patriots in nearly every minuscule facet and have thoroughly conquered them twice during their five-game winning streak.

Those are the types of games that you wish for, Bills linebacker Tremaine Edmunds said. Those are the types of games that we grew up wanting to be in. To have that playoff atmosphere made it 10 times better in front of our fans.

New England Patriots Can Beat The Bills Again If They Meet In The Playoffs

The Patriots spit the bit in the game against Buffalo at Gillette Stadium. Buffalo beat them and theres no denying that it was deserved.

But, does anyone think that if they meet again in the playoffs that things will absolutely be the same? Nothing much went right for New England in that game. They know they have to be better.

Bills quarterback Josh Allen had this to say,

I dont know who the f they thought I was! Allen yelled at Bills defensive tackle Harrison Phillips, per Fairburn.

They thought you were a darn good quarterback. Maybe they didnt know you were a mouth that roared, as well. You were also lucky to boot in that game and you should realize it.

The Patriots arent the dumbest team in the league, you know. Theyll work on finding a way to counter what you delivered in the second game and just maybe take you out in the playoffs.

The Patriots had no sacks against Allen in the second game. Think that will happen again? Dont bet on it. The whiff by Jamie Collins and a fourth-down play was especially huge.

They also couldnt pass the ball at all, with Mac Jones misfiring at 43 percent completions or so. So the Bills cockiness is just the blackboard material this slipping Patriot team needs.

These mouthy Bills who by the way arent exactly tearing up the AFC East with their 9-6 record, which just happens to be the exact same record at the moment as the reeling Patriots team they ripped.

A Lopsided Win For Buffalo

The Buffalo Bills scored a touchdown on their initial drive of the game and never looked back, as they set multiple records on their way to a 47-17 destruction of the New England Patriots in the Saturday night AFC wild-card playoff contest.

Buffalos offense was almost unstoppable, as they became the first team in the Super Bowl era to score a touchdown on each of their first seven drives of a playoff game. They are also the first team in NFL history to go an entire game without punting, kicking a field goal or turning the ball over.

Josh Allen was their biggest star, as he threw five touchdown passes to set the Buffalo team record for touchdown passes in a single game while becoming only the 10th quarterback to rack up five touchdown passes in a playoff game. Allen now has four career playoff games with 250+ passing yards and 50+ rushing yards, which puts him in unparalleled territory. No other player in the Super Bowl era has more than two.

Dawson Knox was Allens primary target early on, as he became the first tight end in NFL history to score two touchdowns in the first quarter of a playoff game.

Buffalo didnt let up even after getting a huge lead, as they called for a tackle eligible pass to score a touchdown despite being up 40-10 in the fourth quarter.

Such An Unprecedented Performance

The Bills are the first team in NFL history to have a game with 7+ touchdowns, no punts and no turnovers in a playoff game. Josh Allen completed more than 80% of his passes, threw for 300+ yards, rushed for 50+ yards and had 5 TDs. No quarterback during the Super Bowl era had ever done all those things in a single game regular season or playoffs.

Another Record Performance For The Bills

Elias Sports Bureau went through their database and found that Dawson Knox is the first tight end in NFL history to score two touchdowns in the first quarter of a playoff game.

The Buffalo Bills’ Dawson Knox caught two touchdowns in the first quarter tonight. He is the first player with 2+ receiving touchdowns in the first quarter of a playoff game since Antonio Brown in 2017, and the only tight end in NFL history to do this. #BillsMafia

New England Patriots Season

2003 New England Patriots season

The 2003 season was the New England Patriots‘ 34th in the National Football League , their 44th overall and their fourth under head coachBill Belichick. They finished with a league-best 142 record before advancing to and winning Super Bowl XXXVIII.

After a first-round bye in the AFCplayoffs, the Patriots faced the Tennessee Titans at home in one of the coldest games in NFL history and won, setting up an AFC Championship Game matchup with the Indianapolis Colts. The top-seeded Patriots intercepted Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, the league’s co-MVP, four times, winning 2414 and advancing to Super Bowl XXXVIII against the Carolina Panthers. With a tied game late in the fourth quarter, Adam Vinatieri kicked the game-winning field goal with seconds remaining, giving the Patriots their second Super Bowl victory in three seasons.

Why The Patriots Lost

It was a no-show for Bill Belichick’s team in this one in all three phases. The Patriots continued their unflattering trait of starting games off slow. Defensively, they showed little to no resistance against Josh Allen and for the second week in a row Mac Jones had an interception on the Patriots opening possession. They took four penalties in the first half and also made a questionable decision to punt the football on a fourth-and-1 situation with the Bills leading 14-0 in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Buffalo took the football and embarked on a 10-play drive that ended in a touchdown that put New England in a 20-0 deficit.

Whatever halftime adjustments the team tried to make didn’t translate onto the field as the Patriots defense continued to let Buffalo glide down the field to covert all six of their meaningful third down situations. Once it was clear that the Patriots would be unable to run the football effectively and this game turned into a track meet, you could’ve started to warm up the busses.

The 47 points allowed were the most ever scored against Bill Belichick in the playoffs.

This Was A Warning Shot

New England Patriots team grades vs Buffalo Bills Week 13

Here’s what the Sky Sports NFL experts had to say…

Brian Baldinger:“Quarterbacks are forced into mistakes because of one or two things typically, either they’re pressured into mistakes or they’re confused into mistakes. And the Patriots were unable to do that on any play to Josh Allen. It looked like Jeff Reinebold back in college when he got the answers to the test before the test so he always aced the test. He had all the answers.”

Shaun Gayle: “That puts any defense back on their heels, when they know they have to contend with not just a mobile quarterback, let’s be honest about this, this was a warning shot across the league for future games. You have to have a special defense to take these options away from him. It’s not only his ability to pass the ball but also to buy time, run through tackles, all these things when you look at your scouting report as a defender, that gets bigger and bigger and bigger.”

Jeff Reinebold: “Brian Daboll , if his resume doesn’t go to the top of everybody’s list now because of that performance against Bill Belichick, this is not just another football team he dismantled tonight, it was Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots. Better get ready, because there’s a new king in that division.”

‘were Afc East Champs’

Fast forward to Sunday night in the Bills locker room at Highmark Stadium in the moments following Buffalos 27-10 AFC East-clinching victory over the hapless New York Jets. McDermott gathered the team, and he was the one who was cursing, though in a good way.

About five, six games ago, they had for us dead, McDermott said. Now were AFC East champs!

Achieving the first of their season goals was a tougher fight than anyone could have imagined, but give the Bills credit. Many fans had lost faith, but like the old Billy Crystal line in The Princess Bride, the Bills were only mostly dead.

Their resurrection began in the second half at Tampa Bay when they rallied from a 24-3 halftime deficit to force overtime, only to lose when Brady just couldnt help himself and had to be Brady. From then on, the Bills ran the table as they blew out their final four opponents – Carolina, New England, Atlanta and New York – by a combined 70 points.

Meanwhile, the Evil Empire collapsed. The Patriots lost three of their final four games, and the only victory – with apologies to the Indianapolis Colts – came against those God-awful Jaguars.

The big one, of course, was Buffalos 33-21 victory at Gillette Stadium the day after Christmas which evened the records at 9-6 but put the Bills in the drivers seat because now they had the tiebreaker advantage based on best division record.

The Drew Bledsoe Trade

Just one year after signing him to a 10-year, $103 million contract, the Patriots needed to part ways with long-time quarterback Drew Bledsoe. Hed been injured, and a young, cheap prospect by the name of Tom Brady excelled in his absence, winning them their first Lombardi trophy. In order to clear the way and settle the debate, which was heated, they dealt Bledsoe to the Buffalo Bills for our 2003 first-round pick. Buffalo thought they had their franchise guy, and so did New England. Tragically, only one of us was right and it wasnt the Bills.

Bills Are Remarkably Healthy For Wild

Im not sure how often this has happened before in the NFL playoffs, but the Bills had an injury report that was completely clean. No players carried a game night designation, meaning everyone the Bills deem inactive will be healthy scratches.

This is not the case for the Patriots. Left tackle Isaiah Wynn, though listed as questionable on New Englands lengthy injury report, has already been ruled out. In his place the Patriots might start Justin Herron, the player who took over when Wynn got hurt last week in Miami.

Or, they could switch Trent Brown from right to left and start Michael Onwenu at right tackle. Brown, who has played left tackle in the past, hasnt been there this year.

Also already ruled out for New England is cornerback Jalen Mills because of COVID-19. Like Wynn, that costs the Patriots are good player, and the Patriots enter the game a little thin at corner which could be problematic against the Bills passing game.

Mills has been outstanding this year. Per Pro Football Focus, Mills has allowed just 35 receptions on 60 targets this season . In the two games against Buffalo, Josh Allen targeted him seven times and completed only three for 34 yards.

In all, the Patriots had 13 players as questionable, though it seems likely that everyone else besides Wynn and Mills will play. The Patriots, after all, typically overload their injury report.
