Outdoor Rated Strip Lights: Ip65 & Ip68
Q: What does IP stand for?
This is a rating system that defines the ability of a product to be able to work in different environments. IP is an acronym “Ingress Protection”. It is a measurement of the protection an item will have against solid objects and liquids.
An IP rating is comprised of 2 numbers. The first number refers to the protection against solid objects and the second number refers to protection against liquids. Here is a complete article about IP ratings.
Q: Can LED lights be used outdoors?
Yes, LED lights can be used outdoors. Please make sure you order the protection suitable for your geographical location. to see our article on protection levels.
Q: What is the max depth that an IP68 LED strip can be submersed?
32 feet .
Q: Are the connectors on the IP68 LED strips also submersible?
No, the factory connectors are rated to IP65 only. If you need us to custom manufacture longer wires on each end of the strip so the connections can be made outside the water, please contact us.
Q: Is there any difference in brightness between the indoor and outdoor versions LED strip lights?
The indoor and outdoor versions have similar brightness outputs. They run off exactly the same specifications and the outdoor versions have a clear silicon sleeve protecting them. The outdoor version may be 5% less bright than the indoor version, but this is not typically noticeable to the human eye.

Factors To Consider When Clipping And Soldering Led Strips
While clipping and soldering are two different methods of connecting LED strips, both have certain requirements to work.
Here are some factors you should consider when connecting LED tapes to each other:
Always cut LED wires from the copper connections you will find every 2 inches or so in the LED tapes. This is important so that the essential LED components on the tapes dont get damaged.
For soldering and clipping, LED tapes need to be exposed. So carefully remove the plastic casing of the tapes right next to the copper connections. Make sure to expose the lettering as well. This step is not needed when using hippo connectors
When connecting tapes through soldering or wire connectors, make sure to match the right wires on each LED strip to each other. So, red connects to red, green to green and so on.
Always use a heat shrink cover to protect the connections. Indoor and outdoor heat shrink covers are different, so make sure to get the right one.
What Would Cause My Led Tape To Flash When Plugged In
I just removed our new tape lighting and plugged it in. The brand name is Patriot Lighting 12 volt 16.4′ flexible LED tape light.
All it does is flash on and off. Any suggestions?
- Are you attempting to use a dimmer? HerrBagSep 19 ’13 at 20:08
- Need more details. Is it the same on several outlets in the house? Does the unit have a flashing mode? Have you measured voltages? BryceOct 19 ’13 at 21:37
- Sounds like a bad power supply. Do you have all of the lights connected or have you cut and rewired the strip?May 19 ’14 at 14:44
- Do you mean that the lights just flash on briefly then go off and away off?
CFLs and LEDs can be very sensitive to leakage currents, especially when ‘turned off’. It doesn’t take much leakage to make them flash. Lutron has a line of dimmers that are adjustable that should help.
- +1. I can cause my LEDs to flash by turning the dimmer down but not completely off. Basically, what’s happening is that the power supply is trying to charge itself up far enough to light the LED, reaches that point, turns the LED on and promptly drains the capacitor, and repeats the process — a low-voltage equivalent of how xenon strobes work.
If once you plug the LED Tape into the transformer and you turn it on and it flashes on and off in a consistent motion. By this I mean a kind of slow strobe then the reason for this would be one of 2 reasons.

Q: What are lumens ?
Lumen is the measurement of brightness as perceived to the human eye. Because of incandescent lighting, we are all accustomed to using watts to measure the brightness of light. Today, we use lumen. Lumen is the most important variable when choosing which LED strip light you need to look at. Make sure you compare lumen output between LED strip lights before determining which one is best for your project.
Q: What is AC?
This is Alternating Current. This is the electricity that is used in most homes and commercial spaces. Its often referred to as line voltage and number differs from country to country. US line voltage is typically 90V-220V, whereas it often averages higher in Europe.
Q: What is DC?
This is Direct Current. Most LED strips on the market use low-voltage DC. A transformer or low-voltage battery is often required to step-down the AC voltage to a suitable level for the LED strips, which is normally 12V or 24V DC.
Q: Are your LED strips constant current or constant voltage?
All of our strip lights require constant voltage. A constant voltage power supply is an electrical power source that regulates voltage to a constant level. In the case of Flexfire LED strip lights, a constant 12V or 24V, depending on the LED strip being used, would be required.

Correlated Color Temperature Explanation
Correlated Color Temperature is the hue, or tint of white to expect from a light source and is measured in kelvin. Lower numbers give off a warmer white that is closer to candle light, and is good for relaxed and cozy spaces. Higher numbers give off a cooler white light that will appear more blueish. While values to the middle of the spectrum give off a more neutral or natural white light that is similar to daylight. Natural and cool white are considered ideal for task lighting.

Find Compatible Power Supply
Now that you know how much power you need for your LED light strips to work, the next step is choosing the right power supply. You need to choose a power supply that will use only 80% of its overall power to run the LED tapes. This is important for the longevity of both your power supply and LED strips.
For example, if your LED strip wattage requirement was 19W, you will need a power source that has a minimum output of 23W . This will keep your power supply from getting overheated. Once you have the minimum wattage requirement down, choose one of three options to for supplying power to your ribbon lights:
a). Sockets or Plug-Ins: You can choose to power your LEDs by connecting them to the power sockets in your space. You will need a good Desktop LED Power Supply for this. Simply connect one end of the power supply to your LED tapes and the other to the socket to light up your tapes. This is a good option for using LED ribbon lights in homes, smaller spaces, and for task or accent lighting.
b). Hardwiring: You can connect your LED light strips directly to the power wiring in your space. This is an effective way to power your tape lights, especially if youre lighting an industrial or commercial space. You will need Aluminum Case LED Power Supply to hardwire your LED tapes and this process is best handled by professionals.

Connect Led Strip To Power Supply
After choosing the right power supply, it is time to connect your LED light tapes to it. As mentioned before you can connect your LED ribbon lights to your power supply via power socket or by hardwiring.
If you choose to connect your LED tapes to a socket, there are two ways to do so:
The first is to connect each length of the strip to a single desktop power supply that can then be connected to the socket.
The second is to connect parallel LED ribbon lights together using a wire clip and connecting the wire clip to the socket. Both of these ways will help you light your space without worrying about Voltage Drop. You can also use LED light strip plug connectors to connect your strips to power sources directly.

Calculate Led Strip Wattage
Ideally, you should already have an idea of how much power will be required to run your LED light tapes. However, there might be some additions or subtractions in the number after youve cut and connected the tapes together. So, calculate the overall wattage required to power your flexible LED light strips again.
This can be done easily by multiplying the length of the strip by the wattage per meter of the strip. For example, if you have a 3.8m long strip with 5W/m power draw, you will need a transformer with a capacity of at least 19W to power it. You can find the power draw information for each LED strip on its packaging or on the manufacturers website.
Another consideration when calculating strip wattage is the voltage requirement for the strip. Generally, LED strips have a 12V or 24V voltage requirement. You have to choose a power source that is compatible with the voltage of the LED light strip, otherwise, it might not work.
If youre using the same LED light tape for your entire project then multiply the length of the entire strip you want to power from a single source with the wattage per meter. This will give you the power capacity of your power source. If youre using different types of LED ribbon lights then calculate the wattage requirement for each of them and add it all. This will give you an idea of how much juice they need to work.
