What If I Signed A Petition For A Candidate For A Place On The Primary Ballot
If a voter signed a candidates petition for a place on the primary ballot, that voter is only able to vote in the primary, or participate in the convention, of that candidates party during the voting year in which the primary election is held . For example, if a voter signed a Democratic candidates petition, that voter is ineligible to vote in the Republican primary or participate in a minor party convention.

During that time, I have noticed a trend in conversations within activist circles. First, an idea is presented and people recommend we all do something about it. Then, people stop talking about the idea and start acting on it. Finally, it becomes ingrained as a strategy for the activist community.
My plea to fellow progressive Democrats: DONT.

The 2024 United States presidential election will be the 60th quadrennial presidential election, scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, 2024. It will be the first presidential election after electoral votes are redistributed according to the post2020 censusreapportionment. Incumbent president Joe Biden has stated that he intends to run for reelection to a second term.
In the United States, general elections follow caucuses and primary elections held by the major parties to determine their nominees. The winner of the 2024 presidential election is scheduled to be inaugurated on January 20, 2025.

Texas has a Republican state government trifecta. A trifecta exists when one political party simultaneously holds the governors office and majorities in both state legislative chambers. As of November 1, 2021, there are 23 Republican trifectas, 15 Democratic trifectas, and 12 divided governments where neither party holds trifecta control.
In the 2020 election, Republicans had a net gain of two trifectas and two states under divided government became trifectas. Prior to that election, Texas had a Republican trifecta. There were 21 Republican trifectas, 15 Democratic trifectas, and 14 divided governments.

United States Presidential Election In Texas
The 2016 United States presidential election in Texas took place on November 8, 2016, as part of the 2016 United States presidential election. Primary elections were held on March 1, 2016.
Texas was won by RepublicanDonald Trump and his running mate Mike Pence by a 9% margin over DemocratsHillary Clinton and Tim Kaine. The Lone Star State assigned its 38 Electoral College votes to the stateâs popular vote winner, but two faithless electors chose other candidates, making Texas the only state in 2016 to give Trump fewer than the assigned electoral votes. Even then, its 36 electoral votes were Trumpâs largest electoral prize in 2016.
When the Electoral College met on December 19, 2016, only 36 out of the 38 electors voted for Trump for president. Two electors defected Christopher Suprun voted for Ohio Governor John Kasich, and the other voted for Congressman Ron Paul. For vice president, 37 electors voted for Pence, while Suprun voted for Carly Fiorina. This was the first time since 1976 where a Republican presidential candidate lost a pledged vote via a faithless elector that year, Gerald Ford lost a Washington state electoral vote to fellow Republican Ronald Reagan. Additionally, this was the first time since 1972 that the winning presidential candidate lost an electoral vote, when Richard Nixon lost a Virginia electoral vote to Libertarian Party nominee John Hospers.
Effects Of The 2020 Census
The election has been the early subject of attention by analysts and commentators, as it will be the first U.S. presidential election to occur after the reapportionment of votes in the United States Electoral College, which will follow the 2020 United States census. This realignment of electoral college votes will remain consistent through the 2028 election. Reapportionment will be conducted again after the 2030 United States Census.
The House of Representatives will have redistributed the seats among the 50 states based on the results of the 2020 census, and the states will conduct a redistricting cycle in 2021 and 2022, where Congressional and state legislative districts will be redrawn. In most states, the governor and the state legislature conduct the redistricting . The party that wins a presidential election often experiences a coattail effect, which helps other candidates of that party win elections. In 2020, although its nominee Joe Biden won the presidential election, the Democratic Party did not flip any state legislature chambers and in fact lost both New Hampshire legislative chambers and the Montana governorship. This will allow the Republican Party to have redistricting control of seats in New Hampshire, potentially leading to gerrymandering that will stay in effect until the 2030 census, similar to the REDMAP project after the 2010 Census.

A special election in Texas is set to test the enduring power of former President Donald Trumps endorsement on Tuesday, as two Republicans compete for a fast-changing seat south of Dallas and Fort Worth.
Trump backed Susan Wright the widow of the late Rep. Ron Wright, who died of complications from Covid-19 just before the May 1 special primary, and he has reaffirmed his endorsement in events and statements throughout the runoff. But Wright, who has also gotten the nod from Sen. Ted Cruz and local politicians, is still facing a fight from fellow Republican Jake Ellzey, a state representative with support from former Gov. Rick Perry and a handful of other prominent Texans.
Trumps endorsement may be one of the most valuable things in Republican politics, but Ellzey has been able to outspend Wright in the race, bringing in over $1.2 million to Wrights $454,000 as of July 7. And while Wright has led Ellzey in several internal polls released by her campaign, uncertainty over exactly who will vote in a summer special election featuring two Republicans with similar ideological leanings means Ellzey can still hope for an upset come Tuesday.
During a July 16 rally for Ellzey in Arlington, Texas, Perry condemned the mailer attacks against his choice.

Texas Governor Greg Abbotts decision to bar private companies from enforcing COVID-19 vaccine mandates is the latest sign he is betting the states electorate remains solidly Republican ahead of his re-election bid next year.
In recent months, Abbott has backed a series of measures that have pulled Texas sharply to the right, including the countrys most restrictive abortion ban, a raft of voting limits, an effort to fund a border wall, restrictions on transgender student athletes and expanded gun rights.

But with the two-term governor facing a pair of intraparty challengers in a March primary, Abbotts moves appear aimed at energizing the Republican base rather than appealing to swing voters and moderate Democrats.
Hes taking a more aggressive approach, said Brendan Steinhauser, a Texas-based Republican political consultant. These are all ways to shore up conservative voters in the state.
Abbotts campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

Jefferson County: Gop Sheriff Primary Tops List Of Races
Among the top races in Jefferson County is the race for Sheriff. Incumbent Democrat Zena Stephens is running unopposed.
She will face the winner of the GOP primary which includes two retired lawmen Emil Serda or David Odom.
Odom is a Marine veteran and retired Nederland Police sergeant. Serda is a former Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputy who has also worked in consulting for oil businesses.
There are county chair seats, constable prescinct positions and justice of the peace races on the ballot in Jefferson County as well.

What Are The Races To Watch In The Democratic Primary
JH: The most interesting race in the Democratic Primary is the nominating contest for governor, pitting nine candidates against each other. While former Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez and Andrew White, son of late Texas Gov. Mark White, are considered the races two favorites, the only thing that seems certain is that the Democratic nominee will be decided in a runoff.
Were watching this race to see how much interest the first seriously contested race in more than a decade generates among Democrats, and to see whether it signals progress for the Democrats in their efforts to become more competitive in Texas in the long run.

Ted Cruz, will recapture their partys nominations, with races for agriculture commissioner and land commissioner less certain because, unlike the races at the top of GOP ticket, respective incumbents Sid Miller and George P. Bush are facing more than token opposition from other candidates.

A primary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate that they believe should be a political party’s candidate for elected office to run in the general election. They are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders. Primaries are state-level and local-level elections that take place prior to a general election. Texas utilizes an open primary system. Voters do not have to register with a party in advance in order to participate in that party’s primary. The voter must sign a pledge stating the following :

Texas Has An Open Primary What Does That Mean
DALLAS Maybe youve recently moved to Texas and youre realizing when you registered to vote in Texas, you didnt register as a Republican or Democrat and it seems a little odd to you.
Or maybe youve lived in Texas all your life and youve heard people talking about being a registered Republican or a registered Democrat, and that seems strange to you.
In Texas, when you register to vote, you dont register with a party.
Texas has whats known as an open primary, meaning you can participate in whichever partys primary you want to vote in.
So, for example, if you voted in the Republican primary in 2018, you can vote in the Democratic primary in 2020.
Some states have closed primaries. In those states, you must register with a party. That means only registered Republicans can vote in the Republican primary and only registered Democrats can vote in the Democratic primary.
One thing to remember about open primaries: voters cant switch party primaries during a calendar year.
That means if you vote in the Democratic primary on Super Tuesday, you cant switch over and vote in a Republican runoff in May.
