Percent Of Americans Will Have An Election Denier On The Ballot This Fall

From the Carolinas to California, Montana to Florida, election denialism has spread across the country. Candidates who support former President Donald Trumps false claims that the 2020 election was stolen will appear on ballots in nearly every state this fall. FiveThirtyEight drew on news reports, debate footage, campaign materials and social media and reached out to every single Republican nominee for the House, Senate, governor, secretary of state and attorney general to determine their position on the 2020 election.

There are a lot of election deniers on the ballot. Out of 552 total Republican nominees running for office, we found 199 who fully denied the legitimacy of the 2020 election. These candidates either clearly stated that the election was stolen from Trump or took legal action to overturn the results, such as voting not to certify election results or joining lawsuits that sought to overturn the election.

Moreover, an additional 61 candidates raised questions around the results of the 2020 election. These candidates havent gone so far as to say explicitly that the election was stolen or take legal action to overturn it. However, they havent said the election was legitimate either. In fact, they have raised doubts about potential fraud.

North Carolina Ag In Legal Bind Amid Probe Over 2020 Tv Ad

RALEIGH, N.C. The campaign committee for North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein, facing trouble for a TV ad aired against a rival in 2020, plans to ask a federal court to block enforcement of a state law making it illegal to knowingly circulate false reports to damage a candidates election chances.

The notice of appeal to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals was filed Wednesday by the campaigns attorney. It comes a day after a trial judge refused to bar Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman from potentially using the law to prosecute anyone over the disputed commercial. Lawyers for Stein have argued the law is overly broad and chills political speech.

The law, which dates to at least 1931, makes it illegal to knowingly circulate false derogatory reports about candidates to harm them at the ballot box. Freemans investigation stems from a September 2020 State Board of Elections complaint about the ad, which was filed against Steins committee by his then-challenger, Republican Jim ONeill.

U.S. District Judge Catherine Eagles, in canceling her July 25 emergency order that had stopped the laws enforcement, wrote Tuesday that the statute was permissible under the Constitution.

Freeman, herself a Democrat, should apply equal protection under the law and open an investigation, party spokesperson Kate Frauenfelder said.

Merrick Garland Appoints Special Counsel To Investigate Biden Handling Of Classified Documents

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland has announced he is appointing Robert Hur as Special Counsel to investigate the handling of classified documents by President Joe Biden, after a small number of classified documents were found in a locked closet in an office at a think tank in Pennsylvania that Biden used, and later, in the President’s Delaware home.

Unlike the case against Donald Trump, who repeatedly refused to return hundreds of classified documents and other items belonging to the federal government, ignored a lawful subpoena, and caused a false statement to be made to DOJ about classified documents in his possession, President Biden’s team immediately notified the Dept. of Justice and National Archives, and returned them.

NBC News White House Correspondent Mike Memoli published the timeline of events.

Hur is a former U.S. Attorney who was appointed by then-President Donald Trump. He is “an attorney at Gibson Dunn, which happens to be the former firm of U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon,” according to Politico’s Kyle Cheney.

Cheney adds, Cannon “had a, uh, notable role in Trump’s documents case.”

Sawyer Hackett, a senior advisor to former HUD Secretary Julian Castro notes the difference in time it took Garland to appoint special counsels.

Finally, another way to look at this is by state. The appendix to this article lists the number of election deniers on the ballot by state. States Biden won, like California and New York, have very few election deniers on the November ballot, especially given their size. But important swing states such as Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin have many election deniers on their ballots. Biden won in all of these states except for Florida, but his wins were narrow in each. These states are ones that Trumpor another GOP nomineewould have to win back in order to win the presidency again. Thus, it is not surprising that these states have the most candidates who are running on a platform of changing election procedures to stop what they believed to be cheating in the 2020 elections.

Legal Analysts Explain Why Merrick Garland’s New Special Counsel Is Linked To Us Attorney Leaving

Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a special counsel Thursday to investigate into classified documents found in President Joe Biden’s office and the garage of his Wilmington, DE, home.

Robert Hur, a former U.S. attorney during Trump’s term in the presidential office, will head the investigation. Garland said that the FBI went to Joe Biden’s home with his attorneys to secured the documents that were found in the garage. The search at the home came after the Penn Biden Center documents were found and Biden attorneys did additional searches to ensure if there were other documents they too were returned. It was then that they discovered additional documents in boxes in the garage.

Initially, U.S. Attorney John Lausch was asked to look into the discovery of the documents. Hur was appointed after Lausch told Garland that he would be leaving the Justice Department in the first part of 2023 for the private sector.

Lausch was the only U.S. Attorney left from the Trump administration. His departure leaves the Justice Department staffed only by Biden-era appointees, hence the announcement of a special prosecutor. Hur was the former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Maryland during the Donald Trump administration.

The 2020 Indiana Attorney General election was held on November 3, 2020, to elect the Attorney General of the U.S. state of Indiana. The Democratic primary convention was scheduled for June 13, 2020. The Republican primary convention was scheduled with a live stream on June 18, 2020, followed by mail-in voting between June 22 and July 9.

Incumbent Attorney General Curtis Hill ran for re-election, but was defeated at the Republican nominating convention by former U.S. RepresentativeTodd Rokita, who eventually won after three rounds of votes. Jonathan Weinzapfel, former mayor of Evansville, narrowly won the Democratic nomination at the party’s nominating convention.

In the general election, Rokita defeated Weinzapfel by approximately 500,000 votes, a margin of more than 16 percentage points. Due to a smaller third-party vote, both Rokita and Weinzapfel received a larger percentage of the vote than their party’s candidates in the state’s presidential and gubernatorial elections. Rokita carried Tippecanoe County, which voted for Democrat Joe Biden in the presidential race, while Weinzapfel carried his home of Vanderburgh County, which voted for Republicans Donald Trump and Eric Holcomb in the presidential and gubernatorial races.

Party primary elections were held on March 3, 2020.

Democratic House candidates outperformed Biden in several Michigan districts, bucking a rightward trend and maintaining seven of their seats. Over Half Of Republicans Running For Federal Statewide Office Have Raised Unfounded Doubts About 2020 Election

Over half of all Republican midterm candidates running for federal and statewide office have raised unfounded doubts about the validity or integrity of the 2020 election results, and according to CBS News’ analysis, all of the states but two Rhode Island and North Dakota have a candidate on the the ballot who is an “election denier,” that is, who denies the results of the 2020 election were valid.

Among the 597 GOP candidates running for state or federal office this November, 308 have raised unfounded doubts about the results of the 2020 election.

Here’s the candidate breakdown:

• 20 out of 37 Republicans running for governor
• 9 out of 31 Republicans running for lieutenant governor
• 9 out of 30 Republicans running for attorney general
• 12 out of 27 Republicans running for secretary of state
• 20 out of 36 Republicans running for the U.S. Senate
• 238 out of 436 Republicans running for U.S. House

Other candidates backtracked after their primary races, hoping to appear less extreme to a wider electorate. CBS News still considers these candidates to have questioned the integrity of the election, even if they have since changed course.

The same is true in Michigan, where Tudor Dixon and Kristina Karamo, running for governor and secretary of state, have also said they wouldn’t have certified Mr. Biden’s 2020 victory.

Many women have sought to become President of the United States. A number received national attention, either as pioneers in the electoral process, as potential candidates, or as candidates of minor parties with a significant national presence. Others were from minor parties or were fringe candidates who entered major party primaries. Only one woman, Hillary Clinton, was a major-party nominee for president. She was nominated by the Democratic party in 2016.

Sarah Palin : When broadcaster Piers Morgan asked her if she accepted that Biden won the election “fair and square,” she said, “Evidently he did because he is sworn in as our president, but no one will convince me, nor anyone else with common sense and a sense of justice no one will convince us that there was not shenanigans.”

Kevin McCarthy : The House minority leader and potential future House speaker voted to object to the Electoral College certification and said on Fox News right after the election that “President Trump won this election, so everyone who’s listening, do not be quiet. We cannot allow this to happen before our very eyes.” At a press conference June, McCarthy said that Joe Biden was president, but did not say if he was legitimately elected.

Lauren Boebert : Before the 2020 election, Boebert wrote in a tweet that “the only way Democrats can win is through election fraud.” Ahead of Jan. 6, she tweeted about “video footage, voice recordings, data analysis, statistical improbabilities,” and more disproven allegations of mass election fraud. She also objected to the Electoral College certification the morning of Jan. 6. Rep. Boebert, now the incumbent in 2024, was at Trump’s “Stop the Steal” rally at the Ellipse and tweeted that morning, “Today is 1776.”

Adam Laxalt : Former Nevada Attorney General and Trump Nevada campaign co-chair Adam Laxalt said in a radio interview in August 2021, “There’s no question that they rigged the election.” He also worked with the 2020 Trump campaign in filing a lawsuit in November 2020 with Ric Grenell, the Trump-appointed former director of national intelligence to try to convince a judge to “stop the counting of improper votes.” Laxalt also spread a false claim about thousands of illegal votes in an op-ed after Mr. Biden had been certified as the winner.

Laxalt has since acknowledged Mr. Biden is the president, but has not explicitly said he was legitimately elected. “I know you want to make this entire election about this. We have major issues going on in our country right now,” he said, avoiding the question in .

JD Vance : “I believe the election was stolen too, but why are we talking about the past,” JD Vance said during a campaign event in January. When asked by Spectrum News Ohio that same month if he felt the election had been stolen, Vance affirmed that he does. “The fundamental problem is we had a massive effort to shift the election by very powerful people in this country. I don’t care whether you say it’s rigged, whether you say it’s stolen, like I’ll say what I’m going to say about it,” he said.
