Economy: Lower Individual And Corporate Taxes Cut Regulations End Trade Deficits
Strengthening the economy by driving economic growth was a key part of Trumps Make America Great Again message in 2016. Trump pledged to eliminate Obama-era regulations on businesses, cut taxes, revive the manufacturing sector, boost domestic energy production, renegotiate trade agreements and take other steps to create new jobs.
As president, Trump has followed through on many of those pledges. His administration has slashed regulations on the financial, agricultural and energy sectors, among others, arguing that deregulation spurs economic growth. Manufacturing jobs went up initially under Trump, though the boom slowed after his first year in office. The coal industry stopped r shedding jobs after years of decline under President Barack Obama, though it hasnt shown gains as more energy companies shift away from coal. In late 2017, Trump signed into law a Republican tax reform bill that slashed taxes for corporations, high-income earners and many middle-class families.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, as businesses have reopened the unemployment rate has declined, and last month stood at 8.4 percent, still considerably higher than the rate Trump inherited in 2017. More than 800,000 people are filing jobless claims weekly, a sign the economy remains in flux heading into the final weeks of campaigning ahead of the election.

They came out during a global pandemic to make a statement, and thats precisely why they assembled shoulder-to-shoulder without masks in a windowless warehouse, creating an ideal environment for the coronavirus to spread.
US President Donald Trumps rally in Henderson, Nevada, on 13 September contravened state health rules, which limit public gatherings to 50 people and require proper social distancing. Trump knew it, and later flaunted the fact that the state authorities failed to stop him. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the president has behaved the same way and refused to follow basic health guidelines at the White House, which is now at the centre of an ongoing outbreak. The president spent 3 days in a hospital after testing positive for COVID-19, and was released on 5 October.
This is not just ineptitude, its sabotage, says Jeffrey Shaman, an epidemiologist at Columbia University in New York City, who has modelled the evolution of the pandemic and how earlier interventions might have saved lives in the United States. He has sabotaged efforts to keep people safe.
Ive never seen such an orchestrated war on the environment or science, says Christine Todd Whitman, who headed the EPA under former Republican president George W. Bush.
A Dearth Of Shared Facts And Information
One of the few things that Republicans and Democrats could agree on during Trumps tenure is that they didnt share the same set of facts. In a 2019 survey, around three-quarters of Americans said most Republican and Democratic voters disagreed not just over political plans and policies, but over basic facts.
Much of the disconnect between the parties involved the news media, which Trump routinely disparaged as fake news and the enemy of the people. Republicans, in particular, expressed widespread and growing distrust of the press. In a 2019 survey, Republicans voiced more distrust than trust in 2o of the 30 specific news outlets they were asked about, even as Democrats expressed more trust than distrust in 22 of those same outlets. Republicans overwhelmingly turned to and trusted one outlet included in the study Fox News even as Democrats used and expressed trust in a wider range of sources. The study concluded that the two sides placed their trust in two nearly inverse media environments.
Some of the media organizations Trump criticized most vocally saw the biggest increases in GOP distrust over time. The share of Republicans who said they distrusted CNN rose from 33% in a 2014 survey to 58% by 2019. The proportion of Republicans who said they distrusted The Washington Post and The New York Times rose 17 and 12 percentage points, respectively, during that span.3

War On The Environment
Trump hasnt just gone after regulations. At the EPA, his administration has sought to undermine the way the government uses science to make public-health decisions.
The scale of the threat came into focus on 31 October 2017 Halloween when then EPA administrator Scott Pruitt signed an order barring scientists with active EPA research grants from serving on the agencys science-advisory panels, making it harder for people with the most expertise to help the agency assess science and craft regulations. The order made it easier for industry scientists to replace the academic researchers, who would be forced to either give up their grants or resign.
That was when I said, Oh my god, the fix is in, says John Bachmann, who spent more than three decades in the EPAs air-quality programme and is now active in a group of retired EPA employees that formed to advocate for scientists and scientific integrity at the agency, after Trump officials began their assault. Its not just that they have their own views, its that they are going to make sure that their views carry more weight in the process.
Pruitt resigned in July 2018, but the trend at the EPA continues. Under its new administrator, Andrew Wheeler, the agency has accelerated efforts to weaken regulations targeting chemicals in water and air pollution.

Ill interject here to note that transcripts of Trumps speeches dont convey the way in which he obviously reads the room and reacts to it. Most politicians understand that speeches are given in part to establish a record to which they can refer. Trump, though, cant stand to see the audience bored and cant introduce a thought without ensuring that its framed the way he wants. So after talking about lifting Americans to prosperity, he had to add that it was Chinas fault that things werent currently great.
