Jon Huntsman Says He Wont Run As Write

Jon Huntsman Jr on the presidential transition and state of the Republican Party

Jon Huntsman is interviewed after seeing the first returns in the GOP primary race for governor at his headquarters in Salt Lake City, on Tuesday, June 30, 2020.

Jon Huntsman says he will not be running a write-in campaign for governor, even with an independent group of staunch supporters striving to keep him in contention following his narrow primary loss.

While we appreciate the continued enthusiasm from supporters throughout the state, especially after a very tight race, we wont be pursuing any efforts for a write-in campaign, the former Utah governor said in a prepared statement Monday.

His comment comes in response to rumors that he might be considering such a last-ditch move and a report citing unnamed sources in Utah Policy and a Deseret News report about a pro-Huntsman group thats building a case for it.

The informal group of Huntsman backers say theyre disheartened that the four Republican rivals split the primary vote and that the victor, Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox, has captured the partys nomination without majority support. The latest count has Cox at 36% of the vote and Huntsman just behind, with about 35%.

The primary process didnt present what we believe will be the strongest candidate going forward, said Alecia Williams, a spokesperson for the group thats lobbying for a Huntsman write-in bid. Were pushing this not because its sour grapes but because we believe hes the right candidate.

It just confirmed everything our gut is telling us, she said.

President Obama has an awesome new strategy for dealing with Republican leadership: send ’em to China. Meet Republican former Utah Governor, and now, Obama appointeeJon Huntsman Jr.

Jon Huntsman, a seventh-generation resident of Utah, has been the Beehive State’s governor for the last five years. His old man, Jon Huntsman Sr., is like him, a very prominent member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but unlike him, was a staffer under the Nixon administration. Roman Grant Huntsman Sr. has eight kids and 70 – count ’em, 70 – grandkids. Jon Huntsman Jr. has seven kids, one of whom was adopted from China. Diplomacy!

Huntsman’s political resume runs deep: staffer for Reagan, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Ambassador to Singapore under George H.W. Bush, and was a deputy trade representative under Dubya for two years, which must’ve been kinda excruciating, even as a high-ranking Republican. His experience in Asia also has its roots starting early on: the LDS mission he took as a young man was to Taiwan. He’s one of those guys who took the advice to be “fluent in Mandarin” very early on.

“Viewed purely through the lens of 2012 politics, the move looks like political genius by the White House: It’s like John Edwards or John Kerry joining the Bush administration in 2001.”

The list of ambassadors to China to come before Hunstman isn’t too exciting, with exception to one name: George H.W. Bush. He was president once. See where we’re going with this?

On Tuesday, the White House announced that President Donald Trump will nominate Huntsman as U.S. Ambassador to Russia.

Born in March 1960, Huntsman is the motorcycle-driving son of billionaire Jon Huntsman Sr., who founded a large chemical manufacturer.

The younger Huntsman dropped out of high school to play keyboard in a rock band, later finishing school and graduating from the University of Pennsylvania. He also served as a Mormon missionary in Taiwan, and speaks fluent Mandarin.

After university, Huntsman worked as an aide in President Ronald Reagan’s White House, and, while still in his early 30s, President George H. W. Bush appointed him ambassador to Singapore.

Later he served as a trade official under President George W. Bush, and ran the Huntsman family’s holding company.

In 2004, he ran for governor of Utah, promising to simplify the state’s tax code, develop industry and reform the state’s Mormon-inspired alcohol restrictions. He was elected governor with 58 percent of the vote.

Utah Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox has defeated former Gov. Jon Huntsman for the GOP nomination for governor, ending Huntsman’s comeback bid in the Republican primary.

The Associated Press declared Cox the winner on Monday, nearly a week after last Tuesday’s primary. Cox leads Huntsman in the vote count, 36 percent to 35 percent. Former state House Speaker Greg Hughes was third, with 21 percent.

Huntsman won two gubernatorial elections, in 2004 and 2008, before leaving office to serve as President Barack Obamas ambassador to China. After an ill-fated 2012 presidential campaign, President Donald Trump tapped Huntsman to serve as his ambassador to Russia, a post Huntsman left last October.

But Huntsman returned to Utah to face a different political landscape than the last time he was on the ballot. Cox has served as lieutenant governor since 2013 and was endorsed by outgoing Gov. Gary Herbert.

Cox will face Democratic nominee Chris Peterson, an attorney and consumer advocate, in the general election. Republicans have won every gubernatorial election in Utah since 1984.
