What Exactly Are These Endorsement Slates In Harris County Republican Politics

The filing deadline is today for those who wish to run for office in the 2018 primary races. The Harris County Republican Party primary has been dominated by endorsement slates for the past two decades. This is primarily due to the high cost of campaigning county-wide in such a large county.
Fairly or unfairly, this system has the perception of being a pay to play system, one in which the candidate willing to pay for highlighting the endorsement gets a relative bargain in reaching voters in addition to getting a boost at the polls. As with most things in life, the system is not black and white there are many shades of gray. Not every endorsement is based solely upon the exchange of money.
Back in 2012, when we were aggressively trying to change this system, Ed Hubbard wrote a fairly comprehensive piece about the issue: Harris County Republican Party: The curse of the slate mailers. Eds comments have certainly held up well over the years. The endorsement slates that Ed mentions are the Link Letter, Conservative Republicans of Harris County , and the Texas Conservative Review. Each of these endorsement slates take money from candidates to increase their reach. Most people refer to them as the Big 3.
There is a lot of money at stake. The table below lists the amount of money paid to one of the Big 3 slates, the Link Letter, during the last round of non-presidential year primaries in 2014.

The Lorain County Republican Party will be appointing volunteers as official Election Day Observers who function to officially monitor activities at designated polling locations on Election Day, November 3, between the hours of 630am and 730pm.Currently we have 12 volunteers. This will allow up to observe only 1 in 6 locations.

Supreme Court Of Ohio Candidate Ratings
Fellow Members of the Ohio State Bar Association,
I am pleased to inform you that the bipartisan OSBA Commission on Judicial Candidates has completed its evaluation of the four candidates running for the Supreme Court of Ohio for the Nov. 3, 2020 General Election. As members of the OSBA, you are receiving this information prior to the official release to the media and the general public later today.
Operating under the process adopted by the Board of Governors, Commission members scored each candidate according to the following criteria: legal knowledge and ability, professional competence, judicial temperament, integrity and diligence, personal responsibility, and public and community service.
Out of 30 possible points, candidates receiving a total composite score of 25 or higher, based upon their average scores in each category, earned a rating of Highly Recommended. A score between 19 and 24 would garner a rating of Recommended. And those earning 18 or less, would be deemed Qualified by Statute. Each candidate was scored on an individual basis, without regard to whom they were facing on the November ballot.
The ratings and scores are as follows:
Judge Jennifer Brunner was rated Recommended, with a score of 20. – DemocratJustice Judith L. French was rated Highly Recommended, with a score of 27. – RepublicanJustice Sharon L. Republicans Compete For Voters Of Color
Jeronimo Cortina, a political scientist at the University of Houston, said Republicans are making a play to be more competitive with voters of color as the states electorate grows more diverse. He pointed to Republicans opening up offices in heavily Latino areas like San Antonio.
The Republican Party in Texas sees the writing on the wall and that is that demographic change is here, he said. Latinos are going to be the biggest chunk of the electorate in the next couple of decades, so either get on board or theyre going to lose them.
A majority of the states top elected officials, who are all Republican, are white. But for years, statewide leaders like Gov. Greg Abbott and Bush have focused on expanding the Republican share of the Latino vote.
Latinos make up 39% of the states population, only slightly behind white Texans, who make up 40%, according to the U.S. Census. But while Latinos make up a majority of Democrats in the statehouse, a training ground for higher office, there are no major Latino candidates on the partys statewide slate. Garza has never been on a Texas ballot. Her only experience raising money as a candidate was collecting $200,000 for a congressional race she suspended.
People of color and women are working-class people in this state, Brown said. Asking people to take time away from their jobs and businesses and families and to campaign in a large state with 254 counties and having the resources to cover that ground is challenging.

The Conservative Coalition of Harris County is a far-right-wing PAC in Harris County led by the aunt of one of Texas worst legislatures, Valoree Swanson. Theyre not a big PAC, but they hold a lot of self-importance. I learned last year about Harris County Republicans that they often think that they are much more important than they are. Unfortunately, this particular PAC isnt any different.
Here is how they describe themselves on their website: CCHC-PAC is basically self-funded, collecting donations to cover our moderate expenses from panel members during election cycles. Basically self-funded? Basically? What does that even mean? Usually, when someone adds basically into a sentence like that, theres more to it.
CCHP has endorsed ISD candidates from Houston, Cy-Fair, and Klein. Unfortunately, each candidate theyve endorsed is worst than the next. While Living Blue in Texas isnt following those races and hasnt made any endorsements, below are some candidates who you should probably not vote to place in charge of your childs education.

I am always skeptical of Black Conservatives simply because conservatism is built on a foundation of white supremacy. However, that is not my space to speak in.
Kendall Lee Baker, Black Conservative, was an outspoken critic of Houstons equal rights ordinance a few years ago that ended gender discrimination. Unfortunately, it was the ordinance that led to the Texas Legislatures embarrassing bathroom bill shibacle.
Thats not all. Baker had a 20-year career with the City of Houston. He was fired from after it was determined that he had made lewd comments, sexual advances, engaged in inappropriate touching, and solicited sexual acts from the females he was supervising.

Election Division About The Elections Administrator
The Elections Administrator of Harris County has the responsibility of carrying out statutory electoral functions outlined by federal and state laws. Some of the electoral functions include:
- Providing training to all Presiding and Alternate Election Judges to ensure the proper execution of state and federal election law during each county/federal election
- Creating the ballot for county, state and federal elections in a manner provided by the state law
- Establishing the number of early voting locations in Harris County and schedule of voting hours
- Securing Election Day polling locations
- Securing the Countys election equipment and maintenance of equipment
- Accepting requests for ballots to be sent by mail and processing all returned ballots for tabulation
- Storing official campaign disclosure forms for local candidates
- Archiving official election results and voter histories for Harris County and reporting this information to the Secretary of State for district, statewide, and federal offices.
In short, the Election Administrator works with the Commissioners Court, the major political parties and other stakeholders to establish an elections infrastructure that facilitates access to the voting process to the citizenry of the third largest county in the United States.
