2007 Jeep Patriot Clock Spring

How Are Air Bag Clock Spring Replaced

Jeep Compass Clockspring Replacement

To replace an airbag clock spring, a technician will first disconnect the battery to disarm the Supplemental Restraint System. The driver’s airbag and the steering wheel are removed. In order to access the wiring harness connected to the airbag clock spring, the trim components on the steering column are removed. It may also be necessary to remove trim components from the lower dash assembly for access to the harness plugs. With the trim removed and the clock spring harness disconnected, the clock spring is removed and replaced. After the clock spring, steering wheel, trim, and airbag have been installed and connected, the Supplemental Restraint System will need to be reset with special software.

Warning Light On Problem

The 2008 Jeep Patriot sport with 5-speed manual transmission was purchased in may 2015. Shortly thereafter I noticed the airbag warning light would intermittently come on, ding and go off within a few seconds. Thinking it was just a loose connection, I wiggled and jiggled every wire and connection thought to be related to the airbag system to no avail. On August 18, 2015 I brought it into a very trustworthy independent service garage specializing in auto electric issues. The mechanic discovered a bad clock spring which was replaced. However, the drivers side airbag was also bad. Considering the importance of a fully functioning airbag system, the vehicles relatively low mileage and light, accident free use this has had, I think the defective parts should be covered under an extended factory warranty. These should not be failing like this unless they are defective or poorly designed.

Million Jeep Dodge And Chrysler Vehicles Recalled For Airbag Problem

2014 Jeep Patriot

This afternoon, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced that it was recalling more than 1.9 million vehicles to fix a problem with their airbags and seatbelts. In a statement, the automaker says that three deaths and five injuries may be linked to the issue.

The problem affects vehicles equipped with specific occupant restraint control modules and front impact sensors. When those vehicles are involved in collisions, theres a chance that the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners may not deploy, which would expose occupants to greater risk of injury.

The good news is that FCA stopped using the occupant restraint control module in question some years ago, and it also shifted to a different wire routing design for front impact sensors.

The bad news is that many FCA vehicles from model-years 2010 to 2014 are affected by the recall, including:

Jeep Patriot 05156106AD Clock Spring

Affected by todays recall are about 400,000 model year 2010-2012 Jeep Compass and Patriot vehicles manufactured between May 2008 and July 2012. The vehicles in question contain a software error that may result in delayed deployment or non-deployment of the side airbags and/or the seatbelt pre-tensioners. As a result, vehicle occupants have an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall impacts 254,000 vehicles in the United States 45,400 vehicles in Canada and an additional 109,400 around the world. The automaker is unaware of any complaints, field reports, crashes or injuries related to the problem.

Chrysler will begin notifying customers of the recall in July 2013. Authorized dealers will upgrade the software at no cost to the owner. In the meantime, customers may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chryslers recall number is N01. Concerned drivers may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to www.safercar.gov. The NHTSA recall campaign number is 13V233000.

The recall comes the same day that Chrysler recalled 220,000 model year 2012-2013 Jeep Wrangler SUVs over a transmission fluid leakage issue that may cause transmission failure. The recall impacts about 181,000 Wranglers in the United States 18,400 in Canada 3,000 in Mexico and another 18,400 overseas.

Can I Drive With A Bad Air Bag Clock Spring

Because the airbag and the horn are both vehicle safety components, and because they are connected through the steering wheel and airbag clock spring, a faulty clock spring should be replaced as soon as possible. A defective airbag clock spring will often defeat the Supplemental Restraint System, preventing the airbags from inflating in a crash.

Vehicle Lists Global Recall System Vip And Dealer Follow Up

All involved vehicles have been entered into the DealerCONNECT Global Recall System and Vehicle Information Plus for dealer inquiry as needed.

GRS provides involved dealers with an VIN list of their incomplete vehicles. The owners name, address and phone number are listed if known. Completed vehicles are removed from GRS within several days of repair claim submission.

To use this system, click on the Service tab and then click on Global Recall System. Your dealers VIN list for each recall displayed can be sorted by: those vehicles that were unsold at recall launch, those with a phone number, city, zip code, or VIN sequence.

Dealers must perform this repair on all unsold vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also use the VIN list to follow up with all owners to schedule appointments for this repair.

Recall VIN lists may contain confidential, restricted owner name and address information that was obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles of various states. Use of this information is permitted for this recall only and is strictly prohibited from all other use.

Feds Investigating Possible Airbag Defect In Jeep Wrangler Vehicles

Following receipt of more than 220 vehicle owner complaints, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a new investigation into certain Jeep Wrangler vehicles.

According to NHTSAs Office of Defects Investigation , an estimated 630,000 left hand drive Jeep Wranglers could be impacted by this investigation, including model year 2007-2012 Wrangler, 2007-2009 Wrangler 2-door 4×4, Wrangler 4-door 4×2 and Wrangler 4-door 4×4, as well as 2007 Wrangler Sahara vehicles.

According ODI, the subject Wrangler vehicles display an airbag warning light that may indicate a failure of the clockspring wiring in the driver side airbag circuit.

Several of the owner complaints cite the diagnostic trouble code Code B1B02 Open Squib to drivers airbag. ODI says that this trouble code would indicate a no-fire condition for the driver side airbag.

ODI previously investigated model year 2008-2012 Jeep Wrangler right hand drive vehicles for a clockspring issue, which eventually led to the recall of approximately 5,440 Wrangler vehicles. In that case, ODI found that the airbag clockspring assemblies on the affected Wrangler vehicles could experience broken circuits. Subsequently, in the event of a crash necessitating airbag deployment, a broken electrical circuit in the airbag clockspring wiring assembly could lead to non-deployment of the driver side frontal airbag.

The vehicle owner complaints referenced above can be viewed at SaferCar.gov.

What To Look Out For When Dealing With Air Bag Clock Spring Issues

Jeep Clock Spring Install

The airbag clock spring contains delicate wires that can be damaged during careless service to the steering and front suspension systems. Care must be exercised to ensure that the steering wheel is not allowed to free-spin with steering and suspension components disconnected. The battery should always be disconnected prior to performing any repairs on the Supplemental Restraint System, including the airbag clock spring. Care must be exercised whenever handling an airbag module. The SRS will also need to be reset once repairs have been completed.

It is recommended that repairs to the Supplemental Restraint System be left to a professional. Accurate diagnosis of the system is essential. Depending on the reason for failure of the airbag clock spring, other components may also need to be replaced to ensure proper function of the Supplemental Restraint System. A professional technician will have access to the equipment to perform a thorough test of the system for any other failed components and replace them as necessary. A technician will also be able to reset the system with special software after the components have been replaced. Someone with advanced DIY experience may be able to perform part of the repair, but will still need assistance to reset the SRS.

If they put the steering wheel on a tooth off then adjusted the drag link to correct what they screwed up, its going to give you fits and may make the ESP trigger when driving. There should be NO lights on after a service. Id return it and have them fix the issue. There is supposed to be a support line to call if dealer techs are not fixing the vehicle.

How Do I Check For A Recall On My Car

In most cases, the automaker will send you a notice in the mail to announce a recall. But if youre the proactive type or if you bought the car used you might want to check for a recall yourself.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration , over 100 million new and used vehicles were involved in some sort of safety-related recall in 2014-15. Recalls vary in severity, but they all relate to the safety of the vehicle, so theyre all worth paying attention to.

Start by looking up the year, make and model of your vehicle on a site like KBB.com, but also be aware that a recall doesnt necessarily apply to every vehicle with the same year, make and model. Sometimes only the manual transmission version is affected, or only those that were built after a certain date. The best way to know for sure is to call the phone number that we provide on your vehicles recall page or go to the government NHTSA site and look up your specific car by its 17-character VIN number.

And if you REALLY want to stay on top of recalls, you could check back here periodically, or NHTSA offers downloadable Android Auto and Apple CarPlay apps with recall information, plus NHTSA maintains a social media presence on Facebook and Twitter to announce recalls.

How Does An Air Bag Clock Spring Work

The airbag clock spring is mounted to the end of the steering column directly behind the steering wheel. It contains a series of small wires wound in a spiral between two plates or discs. These wires rotate between the discs inside the clock spring when the steering wheel is turned from side to side. As the steering wheel turns, the coiled wires wrap freely in both directions. The wiring in the airbag clock spring connects the driver’s airbag, the horn, and any other electric features built into the steering wheel – such as the radio or the cruise control buttons – to the vehicle’s electrical system.

The airbag clock spring is designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle. On some older models, the wiring inside the clock spring can become brittle and break over time, causing failure. The clock spring may need to be replaced if it is damaged during careless service to the steering system, and, in some cases, if the vehicle is in a crash and the driver’s airbag deploys.
