WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Bernie Sanders has long argued but not proved that his big government populism can win over voters in the largely white, rural communities that flocked to Republican Donald Trump in recent elections.

Now, as the chief Senate shepherd of a $3.5 trillion budget proposal, Sanders believes he has another chance to test the theory.

The Vermont senator is in Trump country this weekend, promoting a budget plan packed with progressive initiatives and financed by higher taxes on top earners. He’s targeting two congressional districts where Trumps vote totals increased between 2016 and 2020.

My Republican colleagues are telling everybody that Bernie Sanders and the Democrats are going to raise taxes. You’re right, were gonna raise them on the richest people in this country, Sanders said to the cheers of more than 2,000 who braved sweltering heat and humidity at an outdoor amphitheater in West Lafayette, Indiana on Friday evening.

An Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll in February 2020 found that 17% of Republicans had a favorable view of Sanders, roughly the same share of Republicans who had a favorable view of Biden.

Warren Tries To Light The Fire Of Urgency For Democrats

Still, Sanders isnt exactly Berning it all down. Hes not calling for a primary challenge to Biden or weighing in on whether the president should run for reelection. But he is trying to enlist the president in his effort to nationalize the Senate and House races.

Biden has already embraced some of Sanders arguments. The president asked Americans alarmed by mass shootings to turn your outrage into making this issue central to your vote, advised voters to elect more pro-choice senators in May, noted in January that 48 of the 50 Democrats vote with me on everything and said Democrats could come back with larger majorities next year to pass Build Back Better.

Sanders wants an even more sustained focus from Biden, advising him to say I want to raise the minimum wage, I want to deal with Medicare, I want to deal with housing, I want to deal with climate, I cant do it. I need more votes. Sanders also is leaning on Biden to do as much as he can through executive action on those issues.

The White House did not respond to Sanders comments.

Without his prescribed pivot, Sanders fears the worst for the Democratic Party, in which he twice sought the presidential nomination. He said the enthusiasm level within the Democratic base is extremely low. And its not only working class support that is fading away.

Yeah, and Bernies been on the right side of history quite a few times, which is why so many people like him.

Hevoted against the Defense of Marriage Act , which banned LGBTQ Americans from marrying until the Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional in 2015. Bernie alsovoted against the Gulf War and the Iraq war which the majority of Americans nowbelieve was a mistake. He voted against the Patriot Act, calling it an overreaching,Orwellian piece of legislation. He was against the deregulating Wall Street, which led to the Great Recession of 2008. Watch him school then-Federal Reserve chief Alan Greenspan in 2003. The list goes on, but thats a sampler to get you started.

Most politicians are beholden to special interests and rely on corporate money and wealthy contributors to get re-elected. Not Bernie, he hasnever been beholden to corporate and other super-moneyed interests. Indeed, over his entire career,his biggest donors have been labor unions and union members in other words, regular Americans.

Bernie has never cared much about the establishment, and thats evidenced in the way hes running his presidential campaign. Hes chosen to remain an independent,refuses to take money from Super PACs, holds rallies and meetups with voters rather than with fundraisers and large contributors, and raises money to fund his campaign from small donors.

In an interview with Politico published on Thursday, the progressive from Vermont and the chair of the powerful Senate Budget Committee said that “Republicans stand an excellent chance of gaining control of the House and quite possibly the Senate.”

It’s not a new sentiment from Sanders, who has watched firsthand as Democrats stalled out on their Build Back Better plan, a package of expansive social spending and climate legislation. But he’s also offering an antidote to their string of political illnesses largely stemming from inflation dragging down President Joe Biden’s approval ratings.

He’s pushing Democrats to take a page from the GOP playbook and offer a progressive “Contract with America” that spans the party’s priorities on climate and social programs. It’s meant to be a liberal version of the conservative agenda Republicans spearheaded by Newt Gingrich used to sweep to victory in the 1994 midterm elections.

“I think if the Democrats don’t do that immediately, they are going to look at a very, very bad 2022,” Sanders said.

Hows The Campaign Doing So Far

Bernies message around building a grassroots campaign without corporate money, and of course, his stances on all the issues, is resonating with Americans across the country.

For one, Bernie consistently polls with high margins as a candidate who can beat President Trump in November. He polls particularly well in the Rust Belt, which is so critical to winning the 2020 presidential election. His message to working class families is really resonating there.

The campaigns first FEC filing showed it had received $6 million in the first 24 hours after launching his campaign, $10 million by the end of his first week on the trail, and $18.2 million from 900,000 individual donations that came from 525,000 individual donors. Bernie is raising more money from individuals i.e.not Super PACs than any other candidate in the race.

But the dollar amount Bernie has raised is actually less impressive than the number of people who have gotten involved in his campaign. Within one week of his announcement, 1 million volunteers signed up to help his campaign.

On one weekend in April 2019, the campaign held a kickoff event with over 5,000 organizing parties. The campaign also launched the BERN app, which will help us connect with each other, the people we know, and the people we meet to build the grassroots movement we need to win this election and get Bernie in the White House!

Bernie Sanders ran for president promising a political revolution. When he did not secure the Democratic nomination, the unapologetic progressive immediately threw in as a supporter of a more moderate Democrat, Joe Biden, and became an ardent advocate for his former rival.

But that does not mean that Sanders has lost his revolutionary zeal.

The Biden administration has been engaged in a delicate dance of negotiations with a small group of Republican senators, maintaining the faint hopes of reaching an agreement to approve the presidents infrastructure proposal. Republicans, some Democrats, and many pundits who are unable to get over the delusion of bipartisanship, have suggested that compromise is necessary to enact a more modest proposal.

But Sanders isnt having it.
