Patriots Practice In Front Of Fans At Gillette Stadium

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. It was like old times sort of.

There may not have been the capacity crowd that was on hand on Jan. 4, 2020 a 20-13 loss to Tennessee in the wild-card round of the 2019 NFL playoffs but for the first time since that night more than 1 1/2 years ago, the New England Patriots took the field at Gillette Stadium with fans in the stands.

With thousands of season ticket members and Foxborough residents in attendance, the Patriots continued training camp by conducting a non-padded scrimmage inside their home stadium on Friday night. Coach Bill Belichick split his team up into blue and white squads for the session, which was basically conducted at a walkthrough pace.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NFL canceled all preseason games in 2020 and the Patriots played eight regular-season home games with no fans in the stands.

Taking the microphone at halftime of the scrimmage, Patriots owner Robert Kraft welcomed fans back, saying that a number of changes had been made to both the stadium and the team following its 7-9 finish last year before adding the most important thing is after 580 days to have you all back here.

The experience was invigorating for center David Andrews, who is entering his seventh season with the Patriots.

The annual event is open to town residents as well as season ticket holders, who not only get to watch their hometown team play for nothing but also get treated to a fireworks display at the end.

This marks the 12th year the team has hosted the event to show their appreciation to loyal fans and the local community. Foxboro residents were able to obtain 10 free mobile tickets per person.

What an amazing night with family and friends under the lights at Gillette Stadium, Selectwoman Leah Gibson said. I love the opportunity all the kids have to get a chance to attend a Patriots event.

For Carly Moriarty, this was her first year attending the event.

Patriots Journal: Rookie Kicker Quinn Nordin Puts On A Show

Patriots In

FOXBORO Theres a kicker competition unfolding in New England and the leader in the clubhouse might surprise you.

On Friday night, in the Patriots annual in-stadium practice for season-ticket holders and residents of Foxboro, rookie Quinn Nordin was the only kicker on the field with veteran Nick Folk out with an undisclosed injury. As this uncompetitive, walkthrough practice unfolded, Nordin, an undrafted free agent who was signed in May, took the opportunity and ran with it. By the time the session was over, was the clear star of Day 9 of training camp.

Hes got a strong leg, linebacker Donta Hightower said of Nordin. Thats about all I can tell you right now.

Hightower was right, as Nordin certainly showed off a powerful leg on Friday night. He was also accurate, hitting 10-of-10 attempts from 35, 34, 40, 29, 22, 34, 48, 35, 57 and 55 yards. The performance makes Quinn a legitimate contender to beat out Folk for the Patriots’ kicker job. That would be a huge upset.

Folk, 36, had one of the best seasons of his career last year, hitting 92.9% of his field-goal attempts with the Patriots. The performance earned him a one-year, $1.625-million contract to return to New England. If the Pats cut Folk, they would still owe him $1.225 million. That amount of guaranteed money usually goes to a roster lock.

‘the Stuff You Grow Up Dreaming About’

Gillette Stadium wasnt close to being at full capacity on Friday night. That didnt mean Jonnu Smith didnt feel the love. You could hear the screams for the Patriots new tight end as practice went on. Even in a walkthrough, Smith still put on a show with multiple leaping catches.

After the practice was over, there were more screams for Smith. The new Patriot said the in-stadium practice made him excited for whats to come in September.

This is an amazing atmosphere,” Smith said. “These fans are awesome, man. Just getting out here and feeling the game-day vibes, its something to look forward to.

This is it. When you talk about, NFL football, the New England Patriots, Sunday in Foxboro thats the stuff you grow up dreaming about. To be here, be part of this team, be able to say Im going to be a part of helping this team win is very humbling.

Engineers Preparing For Ncaa Tournament First

RPI quarterback George Marinopoulos said he’ll put aside his allegiance to the Miami Dolphins for a day when the Engineers get to practice at the New England Patriots’ practice facility.

New England Patriots senior football advisor Matt Patricia, a former player and assistant coach at RPI, holds up a jersey with his old number while talking to RPI football coach Ralph Isernia in 2019. Patricia helped arrange the RPI practice at the Patriots’ facility.

TROY The RPI football team will have an NFL experience before the Engineers play their Division III NCAA Tournament first-round game.

On their way to face Endicott College in Beverly, Mass., on Saturday, the RPI football team will make a stop at the New England Patriots’ home in Foxboro, Mass.

The Engineers will practice at 2 p.m. Friday inside Empower Field House, the Patriots’ indoor practice facility adjacent to Gillette Stadium.

RPI coach Ralph Isernia set up the practice through Patriots senior football advisor Matt Patricia, a 1996 RPI graduate.

“It’ll be great,” Isernia said. “I got in touch with Matt Patricia and he got me in touch with a couple of guys. I was grateful that he was able to get back to us because they’re playing tonight in Atlanta … So we’re able to get into their field house, their indoor facility. That’ll be pretty cool.”

RPI has 21 Massachusetts natives on the team.
