Geriatric Socialist Plans Campaign Blitz In Effort To Save Democrats From Republican Wave
Sen. Bernie Sanders is worried about low Democratic turnout and enthusiasm
Socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders is planning a blitz of campaign events to “rally young voters and progressives” to support Democrats before midterm elections, which are widely expected to be a Republican wave, the New York Timesreported Wednesday.
Sanders, who is not a Democrat but has run twice for the party’s presidential nomination, will begin the campaign blitz next week in Oregon, a traditionally deep-blue state that this year is leaning Republican. He will then attend events in multiple swing states, including Nevada, where Republican Senate candidate Adam Laxalt is leading Democratic incumbent Catherine Cortez Masto, and Pennsylvania, where the most recent poll has Democrat John Fetterman and Republican Mehmet Oz tied in the Senate race.
Sanders, a self-described socialist, supports massive tax increases, universal health care, and the Green New Deal. Those far-left positions have some Democrats worrying that Sanders’s “campaigning in swing states could backfire,” the Times noted.
Wisconsin Senate candidate Mandela Barnes, who is trailing in the polls, is one Democrat who appears hesitant about Sanders’s presence. While Sanders “allowed the Barnes campaign to use his name” in fundraising emails, Barnes has not said whether he will appear with Sanders at three events in Wisconsin. A Barnes spokeswoman declined the Timess request for comment.
Endorsement Of Hillary Clinton
After the final primary election, Clinton became the presumptive Democratic nominee. On July 12, Sanders formally endorsed Clinton. He said he would continue to work with the Democratic National Convention organizers to implement progressive positions. Sanders refused to formally concede before the convention. He spoke at the 2016 Democratic National Convention on July 25, during which he gave Clinton his full support. Some of his supporters attempted to protest Clinton’s nomination and booed when Sanders called for party unity. He responded, “Our job is to do two things: to defeat Donald Trump and to elect Hillary Clinton … It is easy to boo, but it is harder to look your kids in the face if we are living under a Trump presidency.”
No But The Party Faces An Uphill Battle

Im not that impressed by long-term projections of Democratic doom in the Senate. Mostly thats because Im not that impressed by long-term political projections in general. Political coalitions change not many people would have had it on their bingo card that Democrats would obtain a Senate majority in 2020 by winning two runoffs in Georgia, and then would actually expand on that majority in 2022 following another runoff in Georgia despite their party controlling the White House.
With that said, while I dont think we can say very much about what politics will look like 10 or 20 years from now, a medium-term look-ahead is possible. Do Democrats have a reasonable hope of regaining a trifecta control of the House, Senate and presidency at any point in the near future ? And how long will they hold onto control of the Senate and the presidency, allowing them to appoint Supreme Court justices without Republican help?
So lets look at the 2024, 2026 and 2028 Senate maps . Well classify races into bronze, silver, gold and platinum tiers in terms of how feasible they are as pickup opportunities. Im deliberately using this goofy metallurgical theme as opposed to the categories FiveThirtyEight typically uses so youll recognize these as being back-of-the-envelope suppositions rather than any sort of official race ratings.

Schumer Says Sinema Can Keep Committee Assignments Despite Party Switch
Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema announced Friday she had registered as an independent, leaving the Democratic Party just days after it won a hard-fought runoff race in Georgia to secure 51 seats in the Senate.
I have joined the growing numbers of Arizonans who reject party politics by declaring my independence from the broken partisan system in Washington, Sinema, 46, wrote in an op-ed for the Arizona Republic newspaper.
In an interview with Politico, the iconoclastic first-term senator said she would neither caucus with the Republican Party nor attend Senate Democrats weekly meetings though the outlet noted her attendance at those gatherings was already a rarity.
Nothing will change about my values or my behavior, she insisted.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement that he had agreed to Sinemas request to keep her on four committees, ensuring that Schumer will not need to re-up the power-sharing agreement with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell that governed the workings of the Senate for the past two years.
Kyrsten is independent thats how shes always been, Schumer said. I believe shes a good and effective Senator and am looking forward to a productive session in the new Democratic majority Senate. We will maintain our new majority on committees, exercise our subpoena power, and be able to clear nominees without discharge votes.
Lieberman went on to win reelection as an independent candidate before retiring from the Senate.
Professional History And Early Years In Vermont
After graduating from college, Sanders returned to New York City, where he worked various jobs, including Head Start teacher, psychiatric aide, and carpenter. In 1968, he moved to Stannard, Vermont, a town small in both area and population within Vermont’s rural Northeast Kingdom region, because he had been “captivated by rural life”. While there, he worked as a carpenter, filmmaker, and writer who created and sold “radical film strips” and other educational materials to schools. He also wrote several articles for the alternative publication The Vermont Freeman. He lived in the area for several years before moving to the more populous Chittenden County in the mid-1970s. During his 2018 reelection campaign, he returned to the town to hold an event with voters and other candidates.

Sanders has long spoken of elections and their consequences in dire terms. During his two campaigns for the presidency, Sanders crisscrossed the country warning that corporate power and authoritarianism would erode human rights. Two weeks from the 2022 midterm elections, many of his fears are nearly realized. Roe v. Wade has been overturned. The Democratic Partys control of the White House and Congress has yielded some progress, but not early enough, to reverse the coming climate catastrophe. Former President Donald Trump and his allies are waging a war on the foundations of democracy, Sanders notes. Under the banner of such bleakness, a lot of people are discouraged, he says. That discouragement may result in them not coming out to vote.
But even above all those enormously important issues, Sanders adds, is the fact that we have more income and wealth inequality today in America than weve ever had. Corporate greed is a root cause of inflation, he explains, making huge profits and ripping off the American people. The policy solutions Sanders suggests are wonky, but the overall point is this: Republicans are going to cut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid to pay for huge tax breaks to billionaires and the wealthiest people in this country. I dont think thats what the American people want.
But Hes Not A Democrat
Yes, technically hes not a Democrat. But, even though Bernie is not a member of the Democratic Party, Bernie caucuses with the Democrats in the Senate and has done so during his entire congressional career. He serves in the Senate Democratic Leadership as the Chairman of Outreach.
Democrats rely on his vote to pass legislation and vote for legislation that he introduces. The Democratic leadership has also named Bernie to key positions such as the ranking, or lead, member on the Senate Budget Committee, Veterans Affairs Committee, and appointed him to numerous other committees and subcommittees.
Bernies addressed the question in this way:
The dilemma is that, if you run outside of the Democratic Party youre not just running a race for president, youre really running to build an entire political movement. In doing that, you would be taking votes away from the Democratic candidate and making it easier for some right-wing Republican to get electedthe Nader dilemma.

Senator Bernie Sanders doubled down this week on his belief that felonsboth those who have completed their sentences and those still in prisonshould have the right to vote. Within hours of his Monday night comments, the Republican National Committee had sent out an email to supporters attacking the 2020 Democratic candidates position.
The furor turned the spotlight onto a long-held assumption that felons, if given the chance, would vote Democrat. Back in 2003, Alabama GOP chair Marty Connors even explained his partys position bluntly: As frank as I can be, were opposed to it because felons dont vote Republican.
But is that really the case? Well, yes, and no.
I think it really depends on the state youre talking about. Felons or ex-felons are much like Americans more broadly, they vote differently based on their racial or ethnic backgrounds, Marc Meredith, a political scientist at the University of Pennsylvania, told Newsweek. In states where the ex-felon or felon population is more African American there is probably going to be a slightly greater Democratic bent to the group just because of the demographic nature of the population. And in places where the ex-felon population is mostly white youll see much less of a partisan difference in how that population votes.
Or, vote at all.

Bernie Sanders On What Democrats Have To Recognize Before The 2022 Midterm Elections
With just six weeks to go before the midterm elections and in some states, voters are already casting their ballots.
A recent CBS News Battleground Tracker poll shows Republicans are still very likely to recapture the House, but Democrats do have some momentum including in the Senate races.
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders told “CBS Mornings” on Tuesday that Democrats are in a pivotal moment weeks before the election to connect with working-class Americans.
“I think what Democrats have to recognize is that right now we are living in a society where the people on top, the billionaire class, is doing phenomenally well and working people are falling further and further behind. We need an agenda that speaks to the needs of working people,” Sanders said.
One of the key issues that Sanders believes Democrats need to focus on is healthcare. In May, Sanders and more than a dozen other senators introduced a plan that would provide federally administered Medicare for All. Sanders said Democrats have to stand up for Americans when it comes to healthcare.
The independent senator said that Democrats should also look into raising the minimum wage, making public colleges free, and expanding social security for seniors.
In order for these ideas to pass, Democrats need to have the majority in the House and Senate which they don’t have at the moment.
