Bernie Sanders Criticizing Bully Trump Says Debate Was Not One Of The Great Moments In American History
The Vermont senator appeared on The View Wednesday.
Sen. Bernie Sanders expressed disappointment in the first presidential debate between President Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden, describing it as not one of the great moments in American history, while criticizing the president for lying about his record in office, particularly on health care.
I think what you have in President Trump is somebody who is a pathological liar, somebody who doesnt believe that the rules apply to him, and somebody who is a bully, Sanders, I-Vt., said on The View Wednesday morning. And I know the moderator and certainly Joe Biden had a hard time dealing with that reality.
The senator took particular issue with Trumps efforts to roll back the Obama administrations Affordable Care Act without proposing a substantive replacement, claiming the insurance of tens of millions of Americans was at stake.
The most important point to be made is that Trump lied and lied and lied again, Sanders continued. When asked whether or not he had come forward with a health care plan weve got 90 million Americans today who have no health insurance or are underinsured, and the cost of health care is soaring and Trump has not done anything, zero, except to make a bad situation worse by going to the Supreme Court and trying to rule the Affordable Care Act unconstitutional.
The Issue With Trickle

Unfortunately, structural shifts in the global economy in the late 1960s and early 1970s fueled primarily by mounting international competition led to the end of post-war economic prosperity. From the ashes of the economic downturn birthed the rise of a new philosophy: neoliberalism.
From the mid-1970s up until now, neoliberalism has dominated the U.S. and international economic order. During this time, weve seen drastic increases in global trade, migration and wealth disparity. Such a system has produced disdain amongst a large coalition of lower-class to middle-class Americans.
For conservative voters, its manifested into a fear of job scarcity, either resulting from outsourcing or being replaced by the cheaper labor of undocumented immigrants here at home. For liberals, its a growing hatred of the rich and an utter loathing of a system that seemingly fails to protect the 99%.
The media has characterized American politics as increasingly divisive. Polarizing leaders such as Trump and Sanders have personified this trend.
But in closer review, its clear that the root of this division isnt purely partisan. The root of this division is an apolitical economic trend that continues to test the social fabric of this once civil union.
The Presidents Cognitive Decline
As age factors more urgently in politics, a simple test could evaluate who remains fit for office.
Remember these numbers. Youll be asked about them at the end of the test: 70, 73, 76, and 78.
These are the ages of the leading candidates in the 2020 presidential election: Elizabeth Warren, Donald Trump, Joe Biden, and Bernie Sanders, respectively. In most any other line of work, people in their eighth decade are usually retired. For most of human historyand still in most of the world todaypeople of this age were usually dead.
Last month, Jimmy Carter, the 95-year-old former U.S. president, said that the office requires a person to be very flexible with mind, and that by age 80 he wouldnt have felt able to do the job. He joined the growing ranks of those suggesting they would support an upper age limit for the office, either for purposes of breaking up the gerontocracy or to ensure a person has the physical and cognitive capacity. You have to be able to go from one subject to another and concentrate on each one adequately and then put them together in a comprehensive way, Carter said.
At a conceptual level, any hard cutoff introduces a host of problems. Beyond meriting charges of age discrimination, age cutoffs are difficult to defend on practical grounds. An age minimum might rule out, say, an illiterate 4-year-old, but its at least hypothetically possible that a 110-year-old might be perfectly able.

Why Is Donald Trump Always Defending Bernie Sanders
On Friday morning, President Donald Trump sent Bernie Sanders a love letter of sorts.
It is happening again to Crazy Bernie, just like last time, only far more obvious, Trump tweeted to his 70+ million followers. They are taking the Democrat Nomination away from him, and theres very little he can do. A Rigged System!
Trump offered no evidence for his claim that Sanders was somehow being victimized by the Democratic Party establishment. But, Fridays tweet is in keeping with Trumps long-held public position that Sanders, an avowed democratic socialist in the midst of his second run for president since 2016, is being purposely discriminated against by the powers-that-be within the Democratic Party.
It is true that thanks to leaked emails published on WikiLeaks following a Russian hack of the Democratic National Committee server during the 2016 election, several DNC staffers were plotting to weaken Sanders in hopes of helping Hillary Clinton win the Democratic nomination. Those disclosures led to a house cleaning within the DNC and a healthy amount of skepticism toward the party apparatus from the Bernie people.
So, why? Why does Trump, who can say an unkind word about almost anyone, seem to regularly step into the fray to advocate for Sanders? Well, a few options:

After a campaign shaken by twists and turns, Bernie Sanders abandoned the race for the White House on Wednesday, promising to work with Joe Biden, now the assured winner of the Democratic primary, who called for the rally to beat Donald Trump.
In announcing to his supporters that he was throwing in the towel, the independent senator greeted Joe Biden as a very respectable man and said that he would work with this more moderate candidate in order to advance his program firmly anchored on the left.
Noting the real tensions between the two camps, the former American vice-president, 77, reached out to supporters of 78-year-old Bernie Sanders.
I know I have to win your votes. And I know it may take time. But I want you to know that I see you, that I hear you, that I understand the sense of urgency that drives you, said wrote the man who will face Donald Trump on November 3.
In the evening, he further praised the passionate voice for progress of Bernie Sanders, who inspired and motivated millions of supporters, especially young voters.

Some supporters raised concerns that publications such as The New York Times minimized coverage of the Sanders campaign in favor of other candidates, especially Trump and Clinton. The Timesombudsman reviewed her papers coverage of the Sanders campaign and found that as of September 2015 the Timeshasnt always taken it very seriously. The tone of some stories is regrettably dismissive, even mocking at times. Some of that is focused on the candidates age, appearance and style, rather than what he has to say. She also found that the Timess coverage of Sanderss campaign was much scanter than its coverage of Trumps, though Trumps was also initially considered a long shot at that time, with 63 articles covering the Trump campaign and 14 covering Sanderss. A December 2015 report found that the three major networksCBS, NBC, and ABChad spent 234 minutes reporting on Trump and 10 minutes on Sanders, despite their similar polling results. The report noted that ABC World News Tonight had spent 81 minutes on Trump and less than one minute on Sanders during 2015.
An Age When Odds Turn Against You
Then again, just a few days before being stricken in Las Vegas, Sanders seemed as healthy as ever. Trump’s tan from a bottle might help project an image of physical well-being, but his actions in office have prompted many to question his mental health. Biden has fumbled badly in campaign appearances, placing his cognitive faculties in doubt. Only Warren, youngest of the leading septuagenarians, shows no outward signs of aging, but even she is at a point in life when the odds turn against you.
Its not surprising that Trump supporters arent focusing on the presidents age. With impeachment proceedings dominating the news and the White House staff unraveling, age becomes the kind of thing the late George Carlin spoke of in his comedy weather forecast when he said: The radar is picking up Russian ICBMs, so I wouldn’t sweat the thundershowers.
On the Democratic side, the goal of defeating Trump is so dominant that little else seems to matter. When Pew researchers asked Democratic voters about age, 97% said it would be better to have a presidential candidate younger than 70. Yet, the Real Clear Politics polling average shows about two-thirds of Democratic primary voters supporting candidates 70 or older Biden, Sanders and Warren.

Those fears among the Democratic establishment have been stoked by shifting polls and the particularly poor performance of former moderate frontrunner Joe Biden.
Survey averages ahead of tomorrows primary put the former vice-president fourth on about 12 per cent, while small-town mayor Pete Buttigieg is in second on about 20 per cent and Senator Sanders is in the lead on 26 per cent.
In recent days, the races two new leaders have come under sustained attack from other candidates desperate to claw back some ground.
Mr Buttigieg copped criticism for his lack of national political experience, Senator Sanders for the enormous cost of some of his sweeping policy proposals.
But the rise of the two relative outsiders seems to be further evidence of a broad desire for a change to the political status quo.
At events across New Hampshire and indeed the rest of the country establishment figures dont seem to be attracting the same crowds or getting the same raucous receptions.
At a rally in snowy Claremont, some Sanders supporters mutter darkly to us about the mainstream media, when we ask about their candidates electability.
The fans who will speak with us are uniformly scathing of any criticism from moderates.
The moderates are the reason Donald Trump won, Sanders supporter Ashley Andreas said.
Bernie is our chance for change. Hes kind of the left, mirror image of Trump.

It may not be possible to keep the ableism out of the 2020 presidential campaign. But just remember that the President, the former vice-president, and the remaining senator are unlikely to take note when you make fun of their perceived disabilities. Your disabled family, friends, and co-workers, on the other hand, will absolutely notice. If you cant do better for the sake of our politics, do better for them even if the candidates themselves probably wont.

Here’s a final look at the proposed economic policies of Republican incumbent Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden and which plan would be better for America.
For a populist strategy to work on the national scale, a significant segment of society needs to feel victimized. Among these citizens, theres a firm belief that the game is rigged and that the system is pitted against them. In 2016, two of the three largest voting coalitions were Trump and Sanders voters. Theres no question American citizens are frustrated with the status quo. The question is why.
An interesting study conducted by the Foreign Policy Research Institute provides us some answers. Researchers at the institute reviewed instances of populist rhetoric used by Trump and Sanders during their 2016 presidential campaigns. Their goal was to determine the prevalence and context of such rhetoric.
From this, they could better analyze how Trump and Sanders crafted their campaigns, and, more importantly, develop a better understanding of what voters from each coalition cared about most. The results were fascinating.
Over the course of 20 randomly selected transcripts , Sanders and Trump each performed roughly 150 instances of populist rhetoric. Broken down into context, an interesting story begins to unfold. Two prominent White House hopefuls – Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren – were fighting for fourth place and were not on track to receive any delegates.
Earlier, Andrew Yang – who had vowed to give every American adult a basic income of $1,000 – suspended his presidential bid.
Mr Yang, a 45-year-old businessman who had no prior political experience, managed to remain in the race for longer than some party veterans.
Mr Yang’s push for a universal basic income came as he warned of the impact that automation would have on US jobs.
The candidate had often noted he was the “opposite” of US President Donald Trump – describing himself as an “Asian guy who likes math”.
He often wore a MATH hat – a nod to the Make America Great Again hats that helped propel Mr Trump to power four years ago.

Conceding defeat as votes were counted in New Hampshire, Mr Yang said: “I am the math guy, and it is clear to me from the numbers that we are not going to win this race.
“This is not an easy decision, or something I made lightly with the team. Endings are hard.
“I have been persuaded that the message of this campaign will not be strengthened by staying in the race any longer.”
Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado also abandoned his campaign on Tuesday night – telling supporters that it was “fitting” to end his presidential effort in the state where he had actively campaigned.

Of course, as we’ve noted before on this blog, young voters still haven’t turned out at high enough rates to make a real difference for Sanders. And indeed, through the first few contests, youth voter turnout wasn’t exceptional, compared to 2008.
The good news for Sanders? That’s starting to change.
On Tuesday, young voters exceeded their 2008 turnout in 4 of the 5 states in three of those states by large margins.
The bad news for Sanders? He’s no longer racking up the same margins among them as he did in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada, where he won their votes 5-to-1 and even 6-to-1. In Florida on Tuesday, it was less than 2-to-1. In the Midwestern states, it was about 4-to-1. And in North Carolina, it was less than 3-to-1.
Had he continued winning young voters by those massive early margins, the increased turnout among them on Tuesday could have made a difference. But it’s still pretty remarkable that the 74-year-old senator from Vermont is taking so much of their votes.
