Understanding The 2022 Midterm Elections

Donald Trump plots path to potential 2024 presidential run

midterm elections are likely toshift the political landscape and impact what President Biden can accomplish during the remainder of his first term. Heres what to know.

When are the midterm elections? The general election is Nov. 8, but the primary season is already underway. Heres a complete calendar of all the primaries in 2022.

Why are the midterms important? The midterm elections determine control of Congress: The party that has the House or Senate majority gets to organize the chamber and decide what legislation Congress considers.Thirty six governors and thousands of state legislators are also on the ballot. Heres a complete guide to the midterms.

Montana Gov Steve Bullock

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock is most notably known for winning in 2016 as a Democrat in a state that helped elect Trump.

“As a Democratic governor in a state Trump won by 20 points, I don’t have the luxury of only talking to people who agree with me,” Bullock said in his May announcement video. “I go all across our state’s 147 thousand square miles and look for common ground to get things done.”

New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio

New York City’s mayor released a video on Youtube, announcing his campaign launch on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

De Blasio, who is in his second term, joined a crowded field of nearly two dozen Democrats in the race for the White House. The central theme of de Blasio’s campaign was “working people first.”

How Donald Trump Is Already Running For President

He may not have officially announced yet, but make no mistake: Donald’s money machine is in mid-campaign form.

Many things might stand in the way of ex-President Donald Trump announcing his 2024 candidacy early, but money isnt one of them.

The most recently available public data shows that Trump sits on at least $113 million. To put that in perspective, thats more than the Republican National Committee , the Democratic National Committee , and President Joe Bidens authorized committees all combined.

Trumps current stash is likely much larger, as well explain, but a complete picture wont emerge until the next round of campaign filings come in later this month.

For a former president, Trumps fundraising operation has been unprecedented in modern memory. As will be his all but inevitable plunge back into the pool, the third consecutive run for an elected president.

But that operation must work within regulatory constraints, and by forcing the issue early, Trump risks repeating a mistake he made in 2020tapping donors dry just as the race hits the home stretch.

The full Trump money apparatus is so large and incestuous that his own team cant seem to make sense of it, as Pay Dirt reported last month.

That overhaul wasnt just about moneyit may have been partly responsible for salvaging Trumps standing within the GOP.

Is Trump going to run for President in 2024? Hes considering it ...

He rose national prominence during his unsuccessful run against Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in 2018 and officially announced his presidential campaign in mid-March, calling it “a defining moment of truth for this country and for every single one of us.”

Within days, O’Rourke’s campaign announced it raised over $6.1 million in the first 24 hours following his announcement, topping Sen. Bernie Sanders’ previous high-water mark of $5.9 million.

The progressive candidate who ran against corruption and pumped out more than 50 policy proposals during her campaign, suspended her run after a lackluster finish in all four early voting states and on Super Tuesday — where she even came up short in her home state. Her best finish was in Iowa, where she came in third.

“I will not be running for president in 2020. But I guarantee I will stay in the fight for the hard-working folks across the country who’ve got the short end of the stick, over and over,” she told reporters at a media availability in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on March 5.

Early on in her campaign, the first American Samoan and the first Hindu member of Congress faced questions over her work in the early 2000’s for an anti-gay organization run by her father and her defense of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, with whom she controversially met in 2017.

Gabbard announced the end to her campaign March 19, following continued low placement in national polls, a weak finish during Super Tuesday and subsequent contests, and failing to meet the thresholds to participate in the most recent series of Democratic National Committee sponsored debates.

Support From The Far Right

According to Michael Barkun, the Trump campaign was remarkable for bringing fringe ideas, beliefs, and organizations into the mainstream. During his presidential campaign, Trump was accused of pandering to white supremacists. He retweeted open racists, and repeatedly refused to condemn David Duke, the Ku Klux Klan or white supremacists, in an interview on CNN’s State of the Union, saying he would first need to “do research” because he knew nothing about Duke or white supremacists. Duke himself enthusiastically supported Trump throughout the 2016 primary and election, and has said he and like-minded people voted for Trump because of his promises to “take our country back”. Trump was later reported to have praised Adolf Hitler to his chief of staff John Kelly, opining that “Hitler did a lot of good things,” and also reportedly kept a volume of Hitler’s speeches on his bedside cabinet when he was younger, and was often compared to Hitler in the media during his 2016 campaign.

After repeated questioning by reporters, Trump said he disavowed David Duke and the KKK. Trump said on MSNBC‘s Morning Joe: “I disavowed him. I disavowed the KKK. Do you want me to do it again for the 12th time? I disavowed him in the past, I disavow him now.”

Pence was asked if he’d run against Trump in 2024. Hear his response

Sanders suspended his campaign on April 8, amid the coronavirus pandemic that roiled the 2020 election cycle.

“We are now some 300 delegates behind, Vice President Biden, and the path toward victory is virtually impossible, “Sanders said in a virtual address to supporters. “So while we are winning the ideological battle and while we are winning the support of so many young people and working people throughout the country, I have concluded that this battle for the Democratic nomination will not be successful. And so today, I am announcing the suspension of my campaign.”

He campaigned for 202 days, but failed to gain traction at the national level, did not reach 2% in any of the Democratic National Committee qualifying polls and only made one debate stage. If Harris were to win the 2020 presidential election, she would have become the first woman and woman of color to ascend to the nation’s highest office. However, she announced the suspension of her presidential bid in December.

“My campaign for president simply doesnât have the financial resources we need to continue,” she said in an email statement to her supporters. “Iâm not a billionaire. I canât fund my own campaign. Trump Tells Team He Needs To Be President Again To Save Himself From Criminal Probes

When Donald Trump formally declares his 2024 candidacy, he wont just be running for another term in the White House. Hell be running away from legal troubles, possible criminal charges, and even the specter of prison time.

In recent months, Trump has made clear to associates that the legal protections of occupying the Oval Office are front-of-mind for him, four people with knowledge of the situation tell Rolling Stone.

More from Rolling Stone

Trump has spoken about how when you are the president of the United States, it is tough for politically motivated prosecutors to get to you, says one of the sources, who has discussed the issue with Trump this summer. He says when he is president again, a new Republican administration will put a stop to the investigation that he views as the Biden administration working to hit him with criminal charges or even put him and his people in prison.

Presidential immunity and picking his own attorney general arent Trumps only reasons for running again. And as he works on another run, Trump is in a tug-of-war with leaders and operatives of his own party about when to announce, according to multiple people with knowledge of the matter.

Donald Trump Teases 2024 Presidential Run At Conservative Conference

NASHVILLE, Tenn. As religious conservatives gathered this week at a sprawling resort near the Grand Ole Opry House, Nikki Haley pressed the Faith and Freedom Coalitions Road to Majority crowd to look to the future.

Its up to us to deliver a new birth of patriotism, said Haley, the former South Carolina governor who was ambassador to the United Nations under President Donald Trump. And together with you, and with trust in God, I pledge to answer that call and inspire our country once again, she said, sounding like a White House candidate herself.

Such comments are typical for a party thats out of power and in search of its next leader. Whats unusual: The partys last leader is plotting his own comeback.

Trump spoke from the same stage Friday, making his first public appearance since the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection began to lay bare his desperate attempts to remain in power. It presented harrowing video footage and searing testimony, including accounts from Trumps close associates and members of his family.

He spent much of his speech blasting the committees efforts as politically motivated and insisting hed done nothing wrong.

And he made sure to tease his own plans.

One of the most urgent tasks facing the next Republican president I wonder who that will be, Trump said at one point, prompting a standing ovation and chants of USA!

Election Night And The Next Day

Gravitas: Here’s why Donald Trump could win the 2024 Presidential Race

The news media and election experts were surprised at Trump’s winning the Electoral College. On the eve of the vote, spread betting firm Spreadex had Clinton at an Electoral College spread of 307322 against Trump’s 216231. The final polls showed a lead by Clinton and in the end she did receive more votes. Trump himself expected, based on polling, to lose the election, and rented a small hotel ballroom to make a brief concession speech, later remarking: “I said if we’re going to lose I don’t want a big ballroom.” Trump performed surprisingly well in all battleground states, especially Florida, Iowa, Ohio, and North Carolina. Even Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, states that had been predicted to vote Democratic, were won by Trump.Cindy Adams reported that “Trumptown knew they’d won by 5:30. Math, calculations, candidate dislike causing voter abstention begat the numbers.”

After networks called Pennsylvania for Trump, putting him with 264 electoral votes while he had a five-point lead in Arizona, which gives eleven electoral votes that would put Trump above the majority of 270, Clinton realized she had no chance to win the election and called Trump early Wednesday morning to concede defeat. Clinton was unable to make a public concession that night, as she had no concession speech written.

How Concessions Became An Election Tradition

The peaceful transfer of power has been a norm since 1800, when the countrys second president John Adams became the first to lose his reelection bid and quietly left Washington, D.C., on an early morning stagecoach to avoid attending his successor Thomas Jeffersons inauguration.

Some early presidential candidates did send congratulatory letters to their opponents, says John R. Vile, dean of political science at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, who has written about the history of concession speeches. But formal concessions didnt become an election custom until 1896, when Republican William McKinley defeated Democrat William Jennings Bryan.

In his account of the campaign in a later memoir, Bryan wrote that he began to resign himself to the loss by 11 p.m. on election nighta resignation that grew in the subsequent days as states completed counting ballots. On Thursday evening, Bryan learned that his loss was certain and immediately sent a telegram to McKinley, offering his congratulations and stating: We have submitted the issue to the American people and their will is law.

Five Gop Contenders Other Than Trump For 2024

President Trump casts a long shadow over the Republican Party even as his attempts to cling to power look doomed to failure.

Trump could run again in 2024. If he does, it is hard to see anyone beating him for the Republican nomination.

Although Trump lost the presidential election by around 7 million votes, he is by far the most popular figure in the nation with GOP voters. He has enormous fundraising prowess he raised about $170 million in the month after the election and he can drive media attention like no one else.

Still, Trump will be 78 by the time of the next election. He also faces financial pressures, with large debts coming due in the next few years. He will continue to command headlines but there are solid reasons why he may not run for the presidency again.

There is speculative chatter that one of Trumps children, perhaps his elder daughter Ivanka, could enter the political arena. But here are some other front-line contenders for the GOP nomination in 2024.

Nikki Haley

Haley was the incumbent governor of South Carolina when Trump chose her to become the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations at the start of his term. She served in the position for almost two years.

Haley was also governor during the time of the 2015 Charleston massacre, in which nine congregants of a historic Black church were murdered by a white supremacist gunman. Haley supported the removal of the Confederate flag from the South Carolina capitol in the aftermath.

Donald Trump Has Reportedly Made Up His Mind About Running For President In 2024

‘Hang Mike Pence’: Aide says Meadows admits Trump supported calls to harm VP | LiveNOW from FOX

Cassidy Hutchinson, a key aide in Donald Trumps White House, told the House committee investigating the violent Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection that Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said Trump supported the calls to “hang Mike Pence.”

LOS ANGELES – Despite being at the center of several political controversies and losing the 2020 election, it appears former President Donald Trump has made up his mind about running in 2024 and he feels confident that he could win, according to a report from New York Magazine.

“Look,” Trump said in an interview with New York Mags Olivia Nuzzi. “I feel very confident that, if I decide to run, Ill win.”

“Well, in my own mind, Ive already made that decision, so nothing factors in anymore. In my own mind, Ive already made that decision,” Trump added.

The only decision left for Trump, according to New York Mag would be when.

According to the Interview, Trump said hes merely decided to announce before or after the 2022 Midterms. “Do I go before or after? That will be my big decision,” he said.

Trump added that he doesnt feel concerned about going up against other GOP members including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis who many consider to be the upcoming Republican favorite.

When asked if he considers DeSantis a rival, Trump said “”I dont feel that. I endorsed Ron, he was at 3, and as soon as I endorsed him, he went to first place.”
