Trump To Hold Rally In Georgia On Eve Of Senate Runoff Elections

Hear Trump ask Georgia officials to overturn 2020 election

President Trump and the Republican National Committee said Sunday that the president will be holding a rally in Dalton, Georgia, on January 4, the night before the state’s crucial Senate runoff election. Republicans need to hold onto at least one of those Senate seats to keep the Senate majority, while Democrats need to win both to make a 50-50 tie, with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris as the tie-breaking vote.

“On behalf of two GREAT Senators, & , I will be going to Georgia on Monday night, January 4th., to have a big and wonderful RALLY. So important for our Country that they win!” Mr. Trump tweeted on Sunday night.

Mr. Trump announced he would be going to Georgia shortly before the White House announced he had signed a $900 billion COVID-19 economic relief bill bundled with a $1.4 trillion government spending bill. His refusal to sign the bill for almost a week had put both of the Republican senators, David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, in a rough spot ahead of the runoff, since they both voted for it. Both Perdue and Loeffler immediately issued statements thanking Mr. Trump for the bill.

Neither Perdue nor Loeffler won 50% of the vote in November, forcing runoff elections. Perdue led Democratic opponent Jon Ossoff, and while Raphael Warnock received the most votes in his race, Loeffler and Republican Congressman Doug Collins combined received more votes than him.

Georgia Secretary Of State: Trump’s False Claims Pose ‘growing Threat’ For Election Workers

Trump and some allies have been lobbing baseless claims of a rigged election across the country, zeroing in on Georgia after he lost the state to President-elect Joe Biden by fewer than 13,000 votes. Trump has saved some of his strongest ire for Gov. Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, both Republicans, and he has pushed them to take measures to overturn the election that the men have said would be illegal.

Trump tweeted Tuesday that if Kemp would simply handle November’s election as he wants in effect disenfranchising a significant number of Democratic voters, many of whom are Black he could “call off” the runoffs.

Gabriel Sterling, a Republican who is the state’s voting system implementation manager, rebuked Trump at a news conference Tuesday.

“It has to stop,” he said of the fury aimed at state officials, pointing to threats that Raffensperger, his family and other election workers have received. “Mr. President, you have not condemned these actions or this language.”

Trump and suggesting that state officials were engaged in a cover-up.

Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan, a Republican, has been vocal in dispelling the theories Trump and his allies have promoted in recent days. In an interview, he said he is “fearful” that the rhetoric “is negatively affecting these runoff races.”

Trump is ratcheting up support for his growing slate of Georgia candidates ahead of Georgias May 24 primary, which might serve as the most important test of his clout in the nation.

Georgia Da Considers Seeking Trump Testimony In 2020 Probe

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate

ATLANTA The Georgia prosecutor investigating potential criminal interference in the 2020 presidential election is considering requesting that former President Donald Trump testify under oath to a grand jury, while several Georgia Republicans already subpoenaed as part of the probe have received letters informing them that they’re at risk of being indicted.

The developments underscore the accelerating nature of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ investigation and the key decisions that may lie ahead for prosecutors who for more than a year have been scrutinizing efforts by Trump and his allies to undo his election loss in Georgia.

Jeff DiSantis, a spokesman for Willis, told The Associated Press that Willis is considering subpoenaing Trump to testify before a special grand jury. Such a demand would almost certainly trigger an immediate court fight, including potentially over Trumps constitutional protections against self-incrimination. Yahoo News had reported earlier Friday that Willis is considering requesting Trumps testimony.

The person who confirmed the issuance of the target letters, which were first reported by Yahoo, would not identify any of the recipients.

Now its pretty clear that its largely just another act of politics in an election year, he said.

Trump Back On The Campaign Trail

Democrats have made Georgia, once reliably conservative, a competitive state. President Joe Bidens narrow win there, the Senate victories in January and Stacey Abrams close race with Kemp in 2018 all play into its battleground status.

At the same time, some prominent Georgia Republicans are fully aligned with the former president. The states congressional delegation includes some of his staunchest defenders. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who spoke at the Saturday Trump rally, is known for supporting dangerous and racist conspiracy theories. Reps. Andrew Clyde and Jody Hice are among those who have offered a false revisionist history of the Jan. 6 riot that Trump supporters led on the Capitol. In March, when Hice launched his primary bid against Raffensperger, the former president quickly endorsed him.

Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan, a Republican who is critical of Trump, cites the partys tilt toward personality-driven politics and grievance over policy and empathy as a factor in his decision not to run for a second term in 2022.

Georgia is a small microcosm of whats happening all over the country with Republicans, Duncan told NBC News. We unfortunately happened to be on the front page of the paper for 10 weeks. Certainly the crosswinds and chaos are going to show up all over the country.

But Trump has not endorsed Jones. And Corey Lewandowski, a Trump adviser who runs one of the former presidents super PACs, hinted last week about a potentially strong new contender.

What Trump Really Lost In Georgia

Trump’s top targets were Gov. Brian Kemp, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and Attorney General Chris Carr, all of whom refused to help him try to overturn the 2020 election results in the state.

Kemp crushed his Trump-recruited challenger, former Sen. David Perdue, by a margin of more than 3-to-1. Carr pummeled his Trump-endorsed rival, John Gordon, by a similar spread. And Raffensperger did well enough taking more than 50 percent to avoid a runoff against Trump-backed Rep. Jody Hice, who managed just a third of the vote.

Two of Trump’s picks for House primaries, former Democrat Vernon Jones and Jake Evans, advanced to runoffs but finished second in their respective races.

While Trump could claim victory in watching Herschel Walker coast to the GOP Senate nod and Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene trounce her primary opponent, the high-profile losses are potentially more consequential for his future.

If Kemp, Carr and Raffensperger are re-elected in November, they will sit in power in the state during the 2024 presidential election. So, rather than installing loyalists in posts Trump saw as pivotal to his 2020 defeat, he whiffed big time in trying to knock out the incumbents who defied him.

For some Georgia Republicans, it was a sign of poor political judgment on Trump’s part to expend so much capital in the state’s primary and on the popular Kemp, in particular.

Trumps Strategy To Win Georgia: Convince Republicans They Cant Trust Their Own Votes

Transcript Quote

When you play with fire, you cant be surprised when you get burned. Republicans for the last four years have been content letting Donald Trump take a match to norms, democracy, and the nature of reality itself, but now that their power over the Senate is being threatened by the flames, theyre calling on the pyromaniac president to cool it. I am strongly encouraging both the president and his team and Republicans in general and the senators to redirect their energy to getting reelected and to not get caught up in this massive wave of misinformation, because thats exactly what it is Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncantold NBC News, saying he is fearful that the presidents quixotic effort to overturn his loss to Joe Biden is negatively affecting Republicans in the states runoff races. It is a massive, unsubstantiated wave of misinformation.

Why would you go back and vote in another rigged election? he added.

I mean, its Looney Tunes, Sterling said on CNN Thursday. The presidents literally coming to Georgia to campaign for the same two senators that his two former lawyers who are filing lawsuits to contest the election, with the same claims that the president made in his very long 46-minute video yesterday that have already been debunked. Im speechless.

Donald Trumps Georgia Revenge Fantasy Isnt Quite Panning Out

Donald Trumps support helped J.D. Vancesecure a win in Ohios GOP Senate primary. It helped Pennsylvanias Doug Mastrianoclaim a double-digit victory in his Republican gubernatorial race. And it may help Mehmet Ozedge out his primary rivals in a still too-close-to-call race to replace retiring Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey.

But one high profile race is proving that the former presidents complete and total endorsement is not necessarily an easy ticket to MAGA victory. Trump has been desperately trying to lift David Perdue, his preferred candidate in Georgias governor race, over incumbent Brian Kempa right-wing governor who provoked his ire by not doing more to overturn Joe Bidens 2020 election win. Trump has cut an ad for Perdue, held one of his trademark rallies for him in the state, and issued nutty statements attacking Kemp as the worst election integrity Governor in the country and a RINO.

None of it has seemed to matter. Kemp has not only maintained a lead over Perduehes appeared to expand it. According to a Fox News poll out Wednesday, Kemp now leads the Trump-backed rival by 32 points among Republican votersthree times the margin he enjoyed back in March, the month Trump held a rally in the state.

Pence To Headline Georgia Rally For Kemp Defying Trump Ahead Of Primary

The Georgia governor is facing Trump-endorsed David Perdue in a May 24 GOP primary.

05/13/2022 06:01 AM EDT

  • Link Copied

Former Vice President Mike Pence will hold a rally with Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp on the eve of his GOP primary Pences most aggressive political move yet in defiance of his former patron and ticket-mate, former President Donald Trump.

The event comes ahead of the May 24 primary pitting Kemp against Trump-endorsed David Perdue, the former senator who is running for governor. The former president has made Kemp one of his top Republican targets of the midterm election, attacking him mercilessly ever since Kemp refused to intervene and overturn Georgias vote count during the 2020 election, when the state went narrowly for President Joe Biden.

In a statement, Pence called Kemp one of the most successful conservative governors in America.

Brian Kemp is my friend, a man dedicated to faith, family and the people of Georgia, Pence said. I am proud to offer my full support for four more years of Brian Kemp as governor of the great state of Georgia.

Pence has shown increasing willingness to undercut Trump since Trump savaged the former vice president for certifying the 2020 election results instead of taking legally dubious steps to overturn them. Pence has stood by his actions on Jan. 6, 2021, and he has called on the Republican Party to move on from focusing on the last presidential election, even as Trump continues to litigate it.

Trump Indictment Predicted In Georgia By Legal Expert: ‘charges Will Stick’

A legal expert is predicting that potential felony charges against former President Donald Trump are likely to have standing in Georgia, and indictments may continue past the Peach State.

“It wouldn’t surprise me for Georgia to become the first jurisdiction to indict a former president on felony charges. I doubt it’ll be the last. And I think the charges will stick,” Laurence Tribe, professor emeritus of constitutional law at Harvard University, tweeted on Friday.

Tribe’s remarks came as Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis ramps up her investigation into Trump’s alleged efforts to overturn Georgia’s vote in the 2020 presidential election. Trump lost the state by a narrow margin of 0.23 points.

As part of her probe, Willis, a Democrat, has reportedly subpoenaed a number of state officials, including Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who recently won a GOP primary in a rebuke of Trump’s election fraud claims.

A phone recording obtained by TheWashington Post revealed that Trump had asked Raffensperger to help him “find 11,780 votes” to overturn President Joe Biden‘s win in Georgia and threatened Raffensperger with “a criminal offense” for refusing to assist his efforts.

“I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have, because we won the state,” Trump is heard saying in the leaked call.
