Are There Any Republicans Running Against Donald Trump

Don't Miss

Election 2020: Will Republicans Run Against Donald Trump Marco Rubio Ted Cruz Others Could Challenge Incumbent For Gop Nomination

It’s unusual for an incumbent to be challenged by his own party in a presidential election. But when the 2020 Election rolls around, President Trump could face some stiff competition from within the GOP after running a highly volatile 2016 campaign and after losing the popular vote by almost 3 million.

Trump, who makes his first joint address to Congress on Tuesday night, has often defied presidential protocol and some Republicans may feel they have a real shot at capturing the nomination despite his overwhelming name recognition. Should Trump face a battle to remain the nominee in 2020 it could spell doom for him and the party. The last two one-term presidents, Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush, each appeared vulnerable in the general election because of a lack of confidence from their base.

But Trump may embrace the role. Even after his Nov. 8 victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton, Trump kept making speeches a part of a “thank you” tour, as he spread his message about the state of the country and his victory. Hitting the campaign trail early, even to face off against his own party, might be something he would welcome.

There is no doubt plenty of Republicans are at least considering challenging Trump, perhaps due to his high disapproval ratings. On Tuesday, a Rasmussen Reports tracking poll showed that 50 percent of likely voters disapprove of the president.

Next Test Of Trumps Influence On The Republican Party: A Crowded Gop Primary Fight For An Ohio House Seat

A GOP primary Tuesday to fill a congressional seat outside Columbus is shaping up to be a test of former president Donald Trump’s influence over the Republican Party, coming after his preferred candidate lost a Texas House campaign last week and some of his allies aligned with other candidates in the competitive Ohio race.

Tuesday’s contest — in which 11 candidates are vying to replace longtime GOP congressman Rep. Steve Stivers — has caused serious consternation among the former president’s advisers and even Trump himself, according to people familiar with the private discussions.

Trump railed at aides after Susan Wright, the candidate he backed in a special Texas Congressional race to replace her late husband, Rep. Ron Wright, lost to a state Republican lawmaker last week, they said.

The defeat was an embarrassing setback for the former president, who has sought to flex his hold on the party by making a slew of endorsements since leaving the White House, inserting himself into GOP primaries and going after political enemies.

Trump has made his preference clear, issuing slashing statements in which he has complained that other candidates are suggesting to voters that he supports them rather than Carey, a close friend of Corey Lewandowski, a former Trump campaign manager who advisers say helped secure the endorsement.

Every two years Americans go to the polls for federal elections, but most people only pay attention when the presidential race is on the ballot. The other contests get lost in the bright lights focused on the presidential contenders. This year is no different, but those other races regardless of the presidential outcome will decide who holds power over creating legislation.

As it stands right now there isn’t much doubt that the Democrats will hold onto power in the House of Representatives. Although all the seats are being contested this year as they are every two years, due to gerrymandering most contests won’t be close. The Republicans would need to flip 17 seats to gain control of the lower house but with Trump down in the polls he won’t be able to raise their chances.

Less attached to national politics, but in presidential election years a strong president can help sway the vote in swing state gubernatorial races. The competition for the 13 governorships, 11 states and 2 territories, doesn’t hold many surprises this year. The closest race is in Montana, where Republican Greg Gianforte holds a three percent lead over the Democrat Mike Cooney.

Obama Slams Republicans For Not Standing Up Against Trumps Falsehoods And Blames Gop For Capitol Riot

  • Invalid Date,

BARACK Obama has slammed Republican lawmakers for not standing up against Donald Trump’s “falsehoods” that the 2020 election was fraudulent.

The former president blamed GOP leaders for the January 6 Capitol insurrection and admitted he was concerned about the state of US democracy.

Obama’s remarks come as Donald Trump continues to repeat baseless allegations that the 2020 election was stolen from him.

Obama said he had expected more from those within the GOP ranks to stand up to Trump following the Capitol insurrection.

Five people were killed as Trump supporters stormed the legislature in a bid to stop Congress certifying Joe Biden’s election victory

The former president told CNN on Monday that some Republicans had been “cowed into positions” that they wouldn’t have accepted five to ten years ago.

He said: “I didn’t expect that there would be so few people who would say, ‘Well, I don’t mind losing my office because this is too important. America is too important.'”

Obama praised Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger for defying Trump and refusing to overturn Biden’s victory in the battleground state.

In his memoirs, the former president claimed that his 2008 election victory changed the identity of the GOP.

Obama said it began when his opponent John McCain selected his running mate Sarah Palin.

She described the riots as the “most egregious violation” of a presidential oath.

Donald Trump And Joe Biden Campaign For The Opportunity To Lead The Nation For The Next 4 Years

Every four years in early November, Americans vote for their next president and vice president.

The Democrats and the Republicans are the country’s major political parties. They each choose a two-person team, called a ticket, to run in the general election.

    arrow-right

Other parties, such as the Libertarians and the Green Party, may have enough support to get their nominees on the ballot in some or all states, but it has been more than 150 years since someone other than a Republican or a Democrat has won the presidency.

Today, KidsPost is profiling the Democratic and Republican tickets for 2020. On the Republican side, President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence are seeking reelection to another four-year term. Challenging them on the Democratic side are presidential nominee Joe Biden and vice-presidential candidate Kamala Harris .

For The Sake Of The Party Republican Senators Must Start The Revolt Against Donald Trump

Clifford Orwin is professor of political science, fellow of St. Michael’s College and senior fellow of Massey College at the University of Toronto.

In late September, I watched as U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that the Democrats would launch impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump – and was certain this would be a mistake. That effort was doomed to fail in the Senate, I believed, and it would also provoke the demon of populism, thus enhancing Mr. Trump’s chances of re-election next year.

What a difference a month makes.

Cracks have appeared in the Republican dike; more holes will follow. Mr. Trump has replied by flailing helplessly, boasting absurdly and lashing out viciously, even labelling Republican critics as “human scum.” His latest gambit: provoking a riot by his congressional supporters. This is how a presidency ends.

You may doubt whether any foreign-policy decision, however harmful and disgraceful, can be cast as an impeachable offense. No such reservation applies, however, to the flim-flam around a phone call to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about investigating a political opponent’s son. It was a clearly illegal attempt to strong-arm a fragile foreign power into helping Mr. Trump win the next election; a career diplomat of impeccable reputation has been among several to attest to it.

Poll Shows Donald Trump Leading 2024 Gop Field By More Than 30 Points Desantis In Second

    U.S.Donald TrumpRepublican PartyPoll

A new poll found most Republicans would support Donald Trump in the 2024 primary for president if he were to run for office again.

A survey released Tuesday from the John Bolton Super PAC found 46 percent of likely general election voters would back Trump being the party’s nominee—the highest level of support of any potential presidential candidate polled by more than 30 points.

In second was Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who had 13 percent support. DeSantis has been praised by Republicans for his approach to the COVID-19 pandemic, as Florida lifted restrictions before many other states.

Former Vice President Mike Pence ranked third in the hypothetical survey with 6 percent support among likely voters.

Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio all polled at 5 percent. South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem had 1 percent support while Missouri Rep. Josh Hawley and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott saw zero support.

Twenty-one percent of those surveyed said they were undecided about who they would support in 2024.

Trump said in late April that he is “100 percent” thinking about running for president for a third time.

At that time, he also said he would consider DeSantis as a potential running mate should he decide to mount another White House campaign. Trump has claimed a lot of people “love” a ticket featuring him and DeSantis.

Officials in Michigan’s most populous county reversed course and certified its election results Tuesday evening, just a few hours after a surprising party-line deadlock suddenly cast the certification of more than 800,000 votes in doubt. Wayne County voted overwhelmingly for President-elect Joe Biden.

It stood for just about three hours under withering criticism, as residents made their complaints clear during a public comment period and local and national leaders lambasted the two members’ decision online.

These Republicans Are Running 2020 Primary Campaigns Against President Donald Trump

Three big-name Republicans have launched campaigns in the 2020 presidential race. While GOP incumbent president Donald Trump is the presumptive nominee, these candidates are hoping the party will open up a primary process — despitereportsthat Republicans in a handful of states will not hold primary elections as a show of support for Trump.

Where that leaves these GOP candidates is unclear, but of the more than 100 people who have officially declared Republican candidacies with the Federal Elections Commission, these three are running the most high-profile campaigns to try and take the Republican nomination away from Trump.

Bill Weld, who was the Republican governor of Massachusetts from 1991 to 1997, announced on April 15 that he was entering the Republican primary.

“In these times of great political strife, when both major parties are entrenched in their ‘win at all cost’ battles, the voices of the American people are being ignored and our nation is suffering,” Weld said in a statement at the time of his announcement, according to CNN. “It is time to return to the principles of Lincoln — equality, dignity, and opportunity for all. There is no greater cause on earth than to preserve what truly makes America great.”

All About Joe Walsh Who Is Running As A Republican Against President Donald Trump

The Democratic field of presidential hopefuls looking to send Donald Trump home from the White House remains crowded, though the same can’t be said for Republicans.

Former Illinois Rep. Joe Walsh, is looking to change that, however, announcing Sunday on This Week with George Stephanopoulos that he is running against Trump, 73, in the 2020 Republican primary. It’s a long-shot bid that Walsh, who has a history of his own inflammatory statements, said he felt compelled to undertake given Trump’s behavior in the Oval Office.

“We can’t take four more years of Donald Trump,” Walsh, a 57-year-old conservative radio host, wrote on Twitter. “And that’s why I’m running for President.”

An erstwhile Trump supporter who has since changed his tune, Walsh’s announcement drew praise, including former Trump White House official Anthony Scaramucci, but also criticism — including from those who were quick to point back at his Trump-like rhetoric against minorities, liberals and other groups.

Here’s what to know about Walsh.

Wheres Kamala Last Person In Room Harris Silent 6 Days Amid Afghan Pullout Chaos

BREAKING: Bill Weld Announces He’s Officially Running ...

Democrats are increasingly fearful Vice President Kamala Harris’ missteps will open the door for Republicans to regain the White House, a new report said Friday.

Dems, including senior White House officials, fear that Harris will lose to any Republican she faces — including former President Donald Trump— if President Biden does not seek reelection in 2024, Axios reported.

At 56, Harris is more than two decades Biden’s junior — and has been considered the heir apparent to the 46th president since he selected her to be his running mate last year.

While Harris will still be the presumptive nominee if Biden becomes the first president since Lyndon Johnson to not seek a second full term, Axios reports that a series of blunders have left officials and operatives concerned.

Right now, one operative told Axios, the feeling among Democrats isn’t “‘Oh, no, our heir apparent is f—ing up, what are we gonna do?’ It’s more that people think, ‘Oh, she’s f—ing up, maybe she shouldn’t be the heir apparent.’”

Harris has repeatedly been criticized for her handling of the illegal immigration crisis along the US-Mexico border, a problem Biden dumped in her lap in March by tasking her to deal with the “root causes” of the issue.

According to Axios, several White House officials have also described Harris’ office as a “sh—tshow,” poorly managed, and staffed with people who don’t know the vice president well.

Republican Warns Of Severe Consequences For Any Senator Who Goes Against Trump

Republican Representative Mark Meadows issued an ominous warning to centrist Republicans in the Senate on Monday evening: If you go against Donald Trump, you will face political repercussions. These “repercussions” could come in the form of either attacks from the President, or backlash by voters. While the attacks from Trump are certain, the backlash from the voters part isn’t as clear as Meadows would like it to be, as Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins explains.

That’s basically what Meadows was saying. Now it’s notclear if Meadows means there’s going to be political ramifications back home,if you run the risk of losing re-election or if the president himself is justgonna make your life a living hell, we don’t know. But I think we can prettymuch go ahead and guarantee that it’s mostly the Trump thing, right? We knowfor a fact, based on past history, if you vote against Donald Trump, especiallyon something as important as this, because you know Meadows is right and thisis a super high profile vote. The biggest one these folks have ever taken, mostof them. And, yeah, if you vote against the president or if you vote in favorof witnesses, you’re putting yourself on Donald Trump’s Twitter target list forthe rest of your life and he will tweet about you for the rest of his life.

Georgias Brad Raffensperger: National Gop Figures Didnt Understand Our Laws

But Gabriel Sterling, Georgia’s voting system implementation manager, said on Wednesday that the system is working exactly the way it is intended.

“The irony of saying ‘fraudulent votes have been found’ — he has gained in the finding of these votes,” he said.

Raffensperger has said he’s been to find ways of disqualifying ballots that hurt the Trump campaign.

“They say that as pressure builds, it reveals your character, it doesn’t change your character. Some people aren’t behaving too well with seeing where the results are,” Raffensperger told NPR’s Ari Shapiro on Tuesday.

“At the end of the day, I want voters to understand that when they cast their ballot in Georgia, it will be accurately counted. You may not like the results and I get that. I understand how contentious it is. But you can then respect the results.”

Shes No 2: Report Claims Kamala Harris Staff Feels They Are Treated Like St

The Democratic officials who spoke to Axios said that in addition to Harris’“handling of high-profile issues and political tone deafness,” they fear she’s been given bad advice by her press and communications people.

Harris still has her defenders, including senior adviser and chief spokesperson Symone Sanders, as well as White House senior adviser Cedric Richmond, who accused unnamed people of carrying out “a whisper campaign designed to sabotage her.”

“At some point it just becomes, one person says something long enough and it becomes an urban legend. It doesn’t have to be credible. It doesn’t have to be real. Someone says something and it can just snowball,” Richmond told Axios, later adding: “You’d just hope if there’s a legitimate criticism they’d put their name next to it.”

Meanwhile, White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain offered unreserved praise for Harris, telling Axios she was “off to the fastest and strongest start of any Vice President I have seen.”

At a news conference Friday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki called Harris “an incredibly important partner to the President of the United States. She has a challenging job, a hard job, and she has a great, supportive team of people around her.

“But other than that,” Psaki added, “I’m not going to have any more comments on those reports.”
