Division matchups always seem to follow their own rules, but three upsets in combination with a New England victory seems unlikely.

Believe it or not, the Panthers have a one-game edge in the matchup. Carolina has beaten New England in four of their seven clashes, including the last two meetings from 2013 and 2017.
The Patriots, however, hold the most meaningful victory of the seriesa 32-29 triumph in Super Bowl XXXVIII.
What to watch for
Carolina could very well be without starting quarterback Sam Darnold and running back Christian McCaffrey as they try to get back over .500. Ready to serve as the next men up are backup P.J. Walker and a backfield committee that includes rookie Chuba Hubbard, Ameer Abdullah and Royce Freeman.
The Panthers devotion to the run last week, an approach that saw them rush 47 times for a season-high 203 yards, helped push them past the Atlanta Falcons. Theyll likely keep to that strategy, regardless of who ultimately suits up.

Run Game Excels But Injuries Are A Concern
The Patriots didn’t get a good performance from rookie quarterback Mac Jones, but it didn’t matter because the run game provided the bulk of the offense.

Veteran running back Brandon Bolden and rookie Rhamondre Stevenson were responsible for most of the production on the ground. Their power-running style was too much for the Panthers, especially in short-yardage situations.
While the rushing attack was excellent Sunday, a few late-game injuries are reason for concern heading into Week 10.
Stevenson was slow to get up after being tackled in the fourth quarter, and the team announced he was questionable to return with a hand injury. Harris also took a hard hit in the fourth quarter and remained down on the field for an extended amount of time before being helped to the sideline. The Patriots announced Harris had a head injury and was questionable to return.
The statuses of both Harris and Stevenson will be a huge storyline for the Patriots entering Week 10. Not having either player for next Sunday’s game against a good Browns team would be far from ideal.

The Patriots COVID issues continue, this time on the offensive side of the ball. Backup quarterback Brian Hoyer is the latest player to be impacted, and is expected to be placed on the reserve/COVID list on Tuesday, according to ESPNs Mike Reiss.
UPDATE: The Patriots have also placed linebackers Josh Uche and Brandon King on reserve/COVD, per Mike Reiss.
Hoyer has served as the Patriots backup quarterback for the entirety of the season. Hes appeared in four games in garbage time, completing 6-of-7 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown. If hes not cleared, Jarrett Stidham would likely step in as the backup. Stidham hasnt been active for a game this season, after beginning the year on the PUP list. With Garrett Gilbert signing with the Washington Football Team last week, Hoyer, Stidham, and Mac Jones are the only three quarterbacks on the Patriots roster.
Uche had just returned from a regular IR stint, and played seven defensive snaps against the Bills on Sunday. The second-year linebacker has appeared in 10 games total this year recording 10 tackles and three sacks.
King has returned to his role as a special teams player for the Patriots this year, and has been on the field for a career-high 78 percent of their special teams snaps. The 28-year-old missed the entire 2019 season due to injury, then opted out in 2020.

The move devastated many of the New England players, while Milloy immediately signed with the Bills two days later. With the Patriots seemingly in emotional disarray, Buffalo defeated New England, 310, with Milloy forcing an interception and recording one sack and five tackles.
However, after a 22 start, the Patriots ended up winning their last 12 games to earn a league-best 142 record.
In the backfield, the team’s rushing game was led by running backs Antowain Smith and Kevin Faulk, who carried the ball equally. Smith was the team’s leading rusher with 642 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Faulk rushed for 638 yards and caught 48 passes for 440 yards.

The Panthers also had a positive Week 8 that saw them snap a four-game winning streak in a 19-13 victory over the Falcons. However, their starting QB Sam Darnold exited the game late with a concussion and his status for Week 9 is unknown as of now.
Head injuries are hard to predict, some come back and play the next game and some are out for weeks. It will be a waiting game to see which side of the fence Darnold lands on.

It was another encouraging week of practice for Christian McCaffrey, who came through his latest spell on the field unscathed. Carolina has now officially activated the All-Pro running back, so the chances are hes going to see some action.
Just how much that will be is unclear. Rhule stated that McCaffrey will be on a limited snap count, but whether that equates to fewer touches or not is another matter.
McCaffrey has been sorely missed. And his presence in the lineup completely shifts how New England approaches this one from a defensive standpoint.

Welcome to Season 10, Episode 9 of the Unconventional Preview, a serious-yet-lighthearted, nostalgia-tinted look at the Patriots weekly matchup.
The Patriots 27-24 victory over the Chargers last Sunday wasnt just their most satisfying of the season. It provided the blueprint for how they should play, and how they will have to play if theyre going to go on the kind of roll that they suddenly seem capable of achieving.
The Patriots defense, with Adrian Phillips picking off two passes and Matthew Judon taking up residency in the Chargers backfield, looked as formidable as it has all season. Damien Harris stormed his way to 80 hard-fought yards while scoring a touchdown for the fourth straight game. And Mac Jones, after a scattershot first half, played his best when it was needed most, showing uncommon resilience for a young quarterback.
Its not exactly a secret formula play stout defense, stick to the running game, and trust the quarterback to convert a few important throws but in victory over a good team, it did feel like the Patriots discovered not just who they are but who they can be.
They will aim for their third straight win something they havent done since they went 8-0 to start the 2019 season on the road Sunday against a Carolina Panthers team that attempts to follow the defense-and-running-game formula but doesnt get much help from the quarterback.
