National Dialogue On Accessiblity

Things Remembered, 8651 John J Kingman Rd, Fort Belvoir ...

While the initial assignment was to create accessible homes that would improve the quality of life for servicemen and women or family members with disabilities, the project launched a wider conversation about what makes a building and site accessible. While barrier-free access typically mitigates mobility challenges, we found that other disabilities sight, auditory, cognitive, and post-traumatic stress among others also needed to be considered. MGA& Ds initial assignment was to develop two prototypes the Patriot Home and the Freedom Home at Fort Belvoir. We subsequently undertook post-occupancy evaluations of our designs and other houses to improve the size, efficiency and cost of the prototypes for a subsequent rollout at Fort Belvoir and elsewhere.

About Patriot Cruise And Salute

Patriot Cruise and Salute is a non-profit charitable organization formed to organize free recreational boating events to benefit US Armed Forces, Gold Star Families, First Responders and Law Enforcement.

Founded by two retired military officers, Patriot Cruise and Salute provides recuperating veterans and their families a day of boating and camaraderie on the Potomac River, recognizing that healing veterans and their families at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Fort Belvoir Community Hospital are often separated from their homes, extended families and their friends. Each year the community comes together to say Thank You to these heroes and their families by providing a much-needed mental respite.

In its 15th year, the original Patriot Cruise and Salute, typically held in early June, had to be postponed due to the unforeseeable circumstances surrounded by the pandemic. However, we are back this year and more excited than ever to honor our heroes this October! The day includes an afternoon of boating on the Potomac River, a cookout, music, activities for kids, and a coin ceremony. Each event promotes camaraderie and offers the community a chance to give back to these veterans for their service and sacrifice to our country.

Base Realignment And Closure

In 1995, the Department of Defense recommended that the U.S. 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment be relocated to Fort Carson, Colorado. Efforts to consolidate units from another post with those units that remained at Fort Bliss were overruled by the Base Realignment and Closing Commission, leaving Fort Bliss without any armored vehicles. Units operating the US Army’s MIM-104 Patriot Missile Defense System relocated to Fort Bliss during the 1990s. The Patriot system played an important role in the Persian Gulf War/Operation Desert Storm in 1991. In commemoration, the US 54 expressway in northeast El Paso was designated the Patriot Freeway.
