Jeep Patriot: Bad Coil Packs Symptoms And Diagnosis
Bad Coil Packs are one of the more problematic ignition issues that can occur with the Jeep Patriot. A bad oil pack can make your Patriot almost un-drivable. Or it may have little effect at all on the engines ability to run. Itll get worse as they lose their ability to fire the spark plugs.
Coil Packs take the place of the distributor and coil in older vehicles. They receive instruction from the engines computer on when to fire the spark plugs. The symptoms of bad coil packs are almost the same as bad spark plugs. So much so that its actually a better idea to look at the plugs first.
If you do need to replace them all, they can be somewhat pricey. It is possible to isolate which coil pack is bad by using a multimeter. Heres a great YouTube video on how to do just that. This can save you a lot of money over just replacing the whole set at one time.
The Check Engine Light Turns On
Another sign of a bad ignition coil is the Check Engine light. It often illuminates when theres a faulty ignition coil.
Remember that the Check Engine light can light up for many reasons, like a bad catalytic converter, a bad spark plug, or a loose fuel cap. So if your car supports the OBD 2 system, use an OBD 2 code scanner or a multimeter to confirm whats wrong.
If its an ignition coil issue, itll likely read engine light codes from Code P0350 to Code P0362, depending on the faulty cylinder in your car.
For example, if theres an issue in your first cylinders ignition coil or circuit, the OBD 2 code scanner will read Code P0351 .
Note: The OBD 2 scanner will read other codes too that arent related to the ignition coil.

Will A Bad Ignition Coil Throw A Code
A faulty ignition coil can cause an engine to misfire, when this happens you may see an error code from P0300 to P0312 depending on which cylinder is experiencing misfires. Additionally, you may see error codes from P0350 to P0362, which indicates a circuit malfunction e.g. broken wires or faulty connector.
When Replacing An Ignition Coil Keep In Mind:
- Ignition coil failure can be caused by faulty spark plugs or wires. The mechanic will inspect and may recommend replacement of those components.
- In a coil-on-plug ignition system, if only one coil fails, you need only replace the faulty coil. Remaining functioning coils can be left in place.
- In systems with the coil located in the distributor, it may be more cost-effective to replace the entire distributor rather than remove and replace just the coil.

How Do Mechanics Replace The Ignition Coil
- The ignition is checked to assure it is in the off position.
- For single coils that supply all cylinders, the coil is disconnected from either a bracket located in the engine compartment or, in some cases, is removed from within the distributor. The replacement coil is secured and all electrical connections reattached. If the distributor was removed for any reason, the timing is adjusted as required.
- For individual coil-on-plug applications, the coil is detached from the top of the individual spark plug and replaced.
- Once the coil is securely in place, all electrical connections are reattached, and timing adjusted as needed, the car is road tested to ensure normal operation.
When To Consider Replacing An Ignition Coil:
- Hard starting or no start. Ignition coils are subject to heat damage and electrical overload, both of which can cause partial or total failure. If the coil is faulty, you may have difficulty starting your car or it may not start at all.
- Misfiring, loss of power, poor acceleration. Once the car is running, a bad ignition coil can cause poor operation of the engine. Should you have misfiring or loss of power, faulty ignition coils would be among the list of causes a mechanic would investigate. The Check Engine Light will often come on with a trouble code indicating which cylinders are involved.
How Urgent Is An Ignition Coil Replacement
A new ignition coil is meant to last for approximately 100,000 miles. But it can get damaged at any time due to a bad spark plug, engine heating, or vibrations.
Faulty ignition coils can shut down your car while driving making it hazardous to drive, especially in busy traffic.
Moreover, it can damage other vehicle parts, such as the engine or the catalytic converter.
Thats why its vital to get your car checked out at the slightest sign of a failing ignition coil especially since they dont usually last long after the first symptoms.

Can I Replace Just One Ignition Coil
Yes, you can replace just the defective ignition coil in your Patriot. However, as a general rule, it is recommended to replace all the ignition coils at once as a preventative measure. This is because when one coil fails, another isnt too far behind, especially if the vehicle has racked up over 100,000 miles.
If your vehicle is equipped with coil pack in which a group of ignition coils are physically connected together, you will have to replace the whole pack.
What Is An Ignition Coil And How Does It Work
An ignition coil transforms ignition voltage to the very high voltage pulses that fire the spark plugs. The number of ignition coils varies depending on car model and year of production. Older cars will have one coil covering all engine cylinders while newer cars may have a coil-on-plug type arrangement that is every cylinder will have its own dedicated ignition coil.

Jeep Patriot Bad Ignition Coils Symptoms Causes And Diagnosis
The ignition coils are part of the ignition system in Jeep Patriot, responsible for amplifying the relatively low battery voltage from 12V to a high voltage of tens of thousands of volts for the spark plugs. Driving your Patriot with bad ignition coils can damage the engine or the catalytic converter, so you must act urgently to avoid more expensive repairs.
The most common signs of bad ignition coils in Jeep Patriot are engine hesitation when accelerating or loss of power, rough idle, misfires, excessive fuel consumption, check engine light illuminates, and sometimes hard starting. In worst case scenario, if the ignition coils are in really bad condition, the engine will not start.
Rodent Damage Or Faulty Connector/wires
If bite marks are discovered under the hood, there is a high probability that a rodent has let off steam in the engine compartment of your Patriot. Then it is important to carefully examine all the cables and hoses for damage, including electrical wires and connectors for the ignition coils.
When the electrical wires or the connector for the ignition coil goes bad, you may see an error code between P0350 to P0362 when you hook up a code scanner tool, which indicates an ignition coil circuit malfunction.
Trouble Starting The Car
A failed ignition coil doesnt deliver the required voltage for spark plugs to ignite the air and fuel mixture. As a result, you may find it difficult to start your car if multiple coils malfunction.
Car starting issues are common for many malfunctions, including a poor ignition coil connection or an electronic control module issue. To confirm, get your car checked out by a mechanic.
Use Obd2 Scanner For Diagnosis
Since Jeep Patriot is equipped with on-board diagnostics , a fault diagnosis can provide initial indications of where the malfunction is located.
To begin troubleshooting, you must first connect the diagnostic tool to your Patriot. The OBDII connector is usually located under the dashboard. With the tool connected, turn on the ignition. Most diagnostic devices then ask for some information about the vehicle. It is important that you enter this 100% correctly, otherwise the result of the search may be inaccurate. In addition to the vehicle make, model, and engine type, you usually also have to type in the Vehicle Identification Number . Since some OBD codes are manufacturer-specific, the scanner will be able to give you more accurate information if you enter more details about your Patriot.

Does The Ignition Coil Order Matter
When replacing ignition coils in your Patriot, it does not matter which order the coils go in or if they get switched around. But what does matter is the order of spark plug wires or connectors with the help of the labels on the connectors, make sure each connector is hooked up to its matched cylinder. Connecting ignition coil wires in the wrong order can affect the performance of the engine or prevent it from starting, and can even result in engine damage. Mostly, due to the fixed arrangement of the connectors and wires, it is not possible to swap the connectors, even by mistake.
Can You Repair A Bad Ignition Coil In Patriot
A faulty ignition coil cannot be repaired it must be replaced with a new one. However, in some cases, if the ignition coil has been contaminated due to an oil leak in the spark plug tube/well and the end of ignition coil boot has not become mushy, you may be able to restore its functionality by cleaning it with an electronic cleaner or MAF sensor cleaner. Nevertheless, If you see corrosion or rust on any ignition coil of your Patriot, it must be replaced.

Jeep Patriot Intermittent Misfires Fixed
Now we have a code for P0304. So, i swap #4 coil with #1 as a quick swap-tronics check in the hopes we had a faulty aftermarket coil. This is where it starts to get interesting….I test drive the Jeep while looking at misfire counters. It again hesitates but now we have severe misfires on #3 and flags a P0303 . I swap coil #3 with coil #2. Test drive and still counts misfires on #3. So again i swap coil #3 with coil #1. Test drive and for the life of me I can not get the engine to misfire any more.
Yes, you were right on keeping track. I also just did the same with some paper. Hopefully tomorrow it will misfire or be magically fixed. What is your thoughts on the current ramp on the waveform i attached in the original post? I have never seen anything like that after the current from the coil was discharged. This capture was taken on the initial P0300. It was very consistent.
Service Engine Soon Light
The check engine light is one of the most common symptoms of bad Coil Packs. More often than not, your engines computer will be able to detect bad Coil Packs in your Patriot.
There are several misfire related trouble codes.
- P0300 this trouble code indicates that there is a random misfire. A random misfire means is that a misfire is detected, but the ECM is not able to determine which one it is coming from, or the misfire is occurring randomly.
- P0301 through P0312- these trouble codes indicate that there is a misfire in one specific cylinder. For example, P0304 is for a misfire in cylinder 4 in the firing order. This makes diagnosing the misfire a bit more straightforward.
There are other misfire related codes as well.
