Incumbent Ben Cline Wins 6th District In Republican Primary

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Ben Cline has won the Republican nomination for U.S. House in Virginias 6th Congressional District, according to the Associated Press.

Cline has served in Congress since 2019. Tuesday night, he told WHSV he is honored the voters chose him as he seeks his third term.

Since redistricting of the state, the 6th congressional district has grown, now including the entire Shenandoah Valley. Cline said leading up to the Republican primaries, he has traveled to new areas of the district to speak with voters.

The new district really unifies the Shenandoah and Roanoke valleys, so the policies that they want to see enacted in Washington are very similar, Cline said. They want to see a secure border. They want to see lower energy costs and gas prices.

The congressman recently sat down with WHSVs Bob Grebe. He spoke about ongoing inflation and skyrocketing gas prices.

We can start to address inflation by becoming energy independent again, Cline said. We would bring down gas prices.

He also spoke on recent gun violence in the country.

Im a strong defender of our Second Amendment rights, Cline said. What we have to do is find ways to protect children in schools while respecting the Constitution… by putting SROs, school resource officers in every school.

He said the issue behind these mass shootings is a crisis in American culture. Thats where school resource officers and mental health counselors could step in to help.

Central Virginia Republican Primaries Include Incumbent Challenge And Six

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Republican voters will be heading to the polls Tuesday, June 21, for primary elections across the commonwealth.

Two races in central Virginia are drawing national attention: 6th District Representative Ben Clines road to a third term has the incumbent facing off against challenger Merritt Hale, a political newcomer and former officer of the U.S. Navy.

UVA Center for Politics Analyst J. Miles Coleman says it could be an uphill battle for Hale.

Cline is the, you know, he has Trumps endorsement, Governor Younkin is very much behind him, as well. So you know, when when you have that type of institutional support, it is hard, Coleman said.

Meanwhile, six people – Derrick Anderson, Gina Ciarcia, Bryce Reeves, David Ross, Crystal Vanuch, and Yesli Vega – are vying for the GOPs spot to take on 7th District Representative Abigail Spanberger .

Its definitely going to be one one of those races where on election night its going to make for a pretty colorful map. So its kind of wide open. Well sort of reevaluate things perhaps after the after the primary, Coleman said.

17th District Senator Reeves has the backing of major Virginia Republicans, like former-Governors Bob McDonnell and George Allen.

Newcomers Anderson and Vega boast the endorsement of well-known U.S. Senators Ted Cruz and Tom Cotton, respectfully.

Coleman says the race could come down to which candidate gets the most votes in their home area.

Other national officials and groups backing Kiggans include U.S. Sens. Tim Scott and Marsha Blackburn , former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the National Rifle Association and the Winning for Women PAC.

The Republican Majority Fund, affiliated with U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton, donated to her campaign, a filing with the Federal Election Commission shows.

Back at home, Kiggans is touting support from current and former statewide officials, including Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, as well as former Virginia Govs. George Allen, Jim Gilmore and Bob McDonnell.

Several Hampton Roads officials, including Virginia Beach Mayor Bobby Dyer and Chesapeake Mayor Rick West, are supporting her campaign as well.

New Districts New Representatives

Virginia underwent its required redistricting process this year, shuffling peoples districts and leaving some without a race to vote on until November.

There were changes to each district during the process, but some representatives saw major changes. Rep. Abigail Spanbergers 7th Congressional District moved from Central Virginia to Northern Virginia, including Prince William County and stretching from Caroline County to Madison County.

Voters can find whether their districts shifted, their registration status and polling places in their area online.

In Virginia, red momentum will be put to the test in newly redrawn swing districts that could have an outsized influence on Democrats’ narrow control of Congress.

Though they aren’t under any primary stress, moderate Democratic Reps. Elaine Luria and Abigail Spanberger will soon be up against the victor from crowded fields of Republicans challenging them for their 2nd and 7th District seats, respectively. Both of those districts had swung Democratic under Donald Trump, but they have remained competitive for conservatives, in part due to the redistricting after the last census.

These expensive races, for the Virginia Beach and Northern Virginia areas, could determine which party controls the House come November.

Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin defeated Democratic incumbent Terry McAuliffe by eight points in Luria’s district last November, while Spanberger’s then-Richmond suburban district voted for the now-governor by 11 points over McAuliffe.

The latest redistricting has pushed Spanberger’s jurisdiction over to constituents in the outer D.C. suburbs, a shift not necessarily favorable because of low voter turnout among residents.

Coming off of Youngkin’s 2021 victory and amid President Joe Biden’s continually shrinking approval numbers, an atmosphere conducive for Republican victories has formed across the state.

Delegates to the national convention in other states were elected by the respective state party organizations. The delegates to the national convention voted on the first ballot to select Donald Trump as the Republican Party’s presidential nominee for president of the United States in the 2020 election, and selected Mike Pence as the vice-presidential nominee.

President Donald Trump informally launched his bid for reelection on February 18, 2017. He launched his reelection campaign earlier in his presidency than any of his predecessors did. He was followed by former governor of MassachusettsBill Weld, who announced his campaign on April 15, 2019, and former Illinois congressmanJoe Walsh, who declared his candidacy on August 25, 2019. Former governor of South Carolina and U.S. representative launched a primary challenge on September 8, 2019. In addition, businessman Rocky De La Fuente entered the race on May 16, 2019, but was not widely recognized as a major candidate.

The Virginia Supreme Court unanimously approved congressional maps for the state on December 28, 2021 based on the 2020 census. As a result, many congressional district lines were redrawn and all of Stafford County move from U.S. Congressional District 1 to the newly formed U.S. Congressional District 7 .

Six Republicans are vying to challenge Representative Abigail Spanberger in a new Democratic-leaning district that stretches across Northern Virginia. The four leaders are: Crystal Vanuch, a self-funding candidate who is the chair of the Stafford County board of supervisors Yesli Vega, a sheriffs deputy who is on the Prince William County board of supervisors and was head of Latinos for Youngkin last year Derrick Anderson, a retired Green Beret and Bryce Reeves, a state senator.

Candidates In Key Virginia Races To Watch

In Virginia, voters will be picking Republican nominees to take on Democratic U.S. House incumbents in two of the most highly competitive districts in the country.

In the coastal 2nd District, which includes the states most populous city, Virginia Beach, four military veterans are competing for the GOP nomination. With a big fundraising lead and the backing of the Congressional Leadership Fund, a super PAC dedicated to electing House Republicans, state Sen. Jen Kiggans is widely seen as the front-runner. The winner will face Democrat Elaine Luria, a retired Naval commander and member of the Jan. 6 committee, in the general election.

In central Virginias 7th District, six candidates are jockeying to take on Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger, a former CIA officer.

Turning to a local race, the Manassas City Council has four Democrats running for three positions: Sonia Vasquez Luna, Dheeraj DJ Jagadev, Ralph Smith and Robert Keller.

Three Republican Districts Vote May 21

The 5th and 8th Congressional Districts will hold conventions where Republicans registered as convention delegates will soon pick the GOP nominees for the midterms.

Rep. Bob Good is being challenged by Dan Moy, Charlottesvilles Republican Committee chairman, to represent the 5th District in November. Rep. Good won the seat after defeating former Rep. Denver Riggleman in a party-run, drive-thru convention in 2020.

The GOP convention for the 5th District will be held May 21 at 10 a.m. at the Kirby Field House at Hampden-Sydney College. The winner will face off with Democrat Josh Throneburg in the midterms.

There are five GOP candidates for the 8th Congressional District convention, which starts at 9 a.m. on May 21 and will take place at the Waterford Events Center in Springfield. Learn more here.

The 10th District will have a firehouse primary from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 21 using ranked-choice voting to see who will try to unseat Rep. Jennifer Wexton . There are 11 candidates in the firehouse primary, multiple locations where voters can be registered and an in-person absentee voting, but only with a valid excuse, on Thursday, May 12, at The Middleburg Barn.

Ranked-choice voting was used for the statewide Republican conventions last year where Gov. Glenn Youngkin won the nomination.

Primary Results: Alabama Senate Runoff Dc And Virginia Primaries

CBS News projects Katie Britt wins the Republican primary for U.S. Senate in Alabama, prevailing over Rep. Mo Brooks in their runoff race Tuesday.

In her election night remarks, Britt thanked her family and supporters, including Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton, Arkansas GOP gubernatorial nominee Sarah Huckabee Sanders and finally, former President Donald Trump. “So many people across Alabama miss his ‘America first’ agenda, and we are going to go to the United States Senate to fight for it each and every day,” she said.

Brooks may have conceded, but he had no kind words for the woman who defeated him. “We are sending to Washington, D.C., the exact opposite of what we need in the United States Senate,” he said. “But folks, voters have spoken. They may not have spoken wisely. They may have been seduced by brazenly false advertising. But nonetheless, they have spoken, and I respect their will.”

Virginia and the District of Columbia held primaries Tuesday, and Georgia also held runoff elections, but perhaps the most closely watched race Tuesday was the Alabama GOP Senate runoff for retiring Sen. Richard Shelby’s seat, which pitted Brooks against Britt, Shelby’s former chief of staff.

Brooks continued to embrace Trump’s 2020 election denialism, and he also suggested at a Trump rally last August that Republicans should look ahead in 2022, rather than re-litigating the 2020 election results.

Dale Strong won the GOP runoff for Alabama’s 5th Congressional District.

Kiggans Wins Gop Primary To Face Luria In Virginia

Virginia state Sen. Jen Kiggans is projected to win the Republican primary in the states 2nd Congressional District on Tuesday, setting up a matchup against incumbent Rep. Elaine Luria .

The Associated Press called the race at 7:42 p.m. ET.

Kiggans was seen as the frontrunner in the GOP primary, earning high-profile endorsements inside and outside of Virginia.

She had the support of the Congressional Leadership Fund and House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefaniks E-Pac. Additionally, the GOP group Winning for Women Action Fund launched a six-figure radio and television ad buy for Kiggans last week.

Virginias 2nd District includes Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Isle of Wight County, Southampton County, and the Eastern Shore.

The state senator defeated three other Republicans in the primary and is set to face off against Luria in what is seen as one of the most competitive House races in the country. The non-partisan Cook Political Report rates the race as a toss-up.

Theres one D.C.-area local race in Tuesdays primary: The Democratic primary for Manassas City Council has four candidates seeking three spots on the November ballot Dheeraj DJ Jagadev, incumbent Ralph J. Smith, Robert R. Keller and Sonia R. Vasquez Luna.

With eight precincts out of nine reporting, Vasquez Luna leads with 29.60% of the vote Smith comes second with 28.61%, Jagadev is third with 24.09% and Keller has 17.71%.

Elsewhere in the commonwealth, Democratic Herb Jones and Republican incumbent Rep. Rob Wittman in the 1st Luria in the 2nd Democratic Rep. Bobby Scott in the 3rd Democratic Rep. Donald McEachin and Republican challenger Leon Benjamin in the 4th Democratic challenger Joshua Throneburg in the 5th Spanberger in the 7th Republican Rep. Morgan Griffith in the 9th Democratic Rep. Jennifer Wexton in the 10th, and Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly in the 11th Congressional District ran unopposed and have won their primaries, The Associated Press says.

Rep. Ben Lee Cline has defeated challenger Merritt Hale in the Republican primary in the 6th District, the AP said. Cline will face Democratic challenger Jennifer Lewis and independent Danny LeBeau in November. And Terry Namkung has defeated Ted Engquist in the Republican primary in the 3rd District hell take on Scott in November.
