A recent nationwide found that 60% of Republicans want Trump to run for president again and 40% of GOP members do not want him to run again.
The difference is stark among all potential voters only 28% of respondents want to see Trump make another run for president, while 71% do not want to see him make another campaign.
While Trump is probably the favorite for the Republican nomination right now, analysts said a lot can change before primary votes are cast in early 2024.
For one thing, Trump is under investigation by prosecutors in New York for various financial dealings and in Georgia over efforts to pressure state officials into changing election results.
Some of the Republicans who don’t want Trump to run again note that he lost the popular vote in two straight elections. Trump also lost the Electoral College to Biden in 2020, but many Republicans down the ballot out-polled him.
“My guess is that there are a bunch of people who want to vote Republican but simply won’t if Trump is the nominee,” Republican strategist Scott Jennings said.
Other Potential Gop Hopefuls: Rubio Hawley Tim Scott
Republicans are also talking up potential candidacies of other senators, including Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, a 2016 candidate who recently made a trip to Iowa Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri, who backed Trump’s election protest right before the Jan. 6 insurrection and Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, the party’s highest-ranking Black lawmaker.
At least one House Republican is also in the speculative mix: Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming.
One of ten House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump over the Jan. 6 riot, Cheney is being challenged in a Republican primary by a Trump-backed candidate. As she campaigns for her job, Cheney is giving national speeches on the need for the GOP to move past Trump.

On Tuesday, Donald Trump became the first political figure to announce his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election.
Bob Beatty, political science chair at Washburn University, said the GOP might be moving away from Trump.
“The midterms show that if, actually, the party starts to lose, then the tide may turn against him,” he said.
Darius Watson of Lincoln University said he doesn’t know whether Trump’s rhetoric will be as successful this time around.
“He’s going to have to rely on a lot of the old bits,” said Watson. “I think he has really used several of them up and I think even the reactions from the conservative media show that it’s not having the same impact as it did even two years ago.”

Should Trump Help Herschel Walker Many Georgia Republicans Are Leery
ATLANTA The final weeks of the runoff campaign for Senate in Georgia will coincide with the first weeks of former President Donald J. Trumps 2024 re-election bid. The overlap has left some Republicans with a lingering question: Will Mr. Trump visit the Peach State to campaign for Herschel Walker, the Republicans Senate nominee?
Mr. Trump held rallies for the candidates he endorsed in several key states ahead of the midterm elections, but he did not visit during the last few months of campaigning in Georgia, where most of the contenders he had endorsed lost in their primaries. His presidential announcement on Tuesday has led some in the Georgia G.O.P. to speculate, with much anxiety, on whether he would hit the campaign trail for Mr. Walker and, by extension, for himself.
I hope President Trump has a great time at Mar-a-Lago. And I believe that he will stay there, and I believe that he should stay there, said Cole Muzio, president of the Georgia-based conservative political advocacy group Frontline Policy Council.
A Trump rally in Georgia could further complicate an already difficult Senate campaign season for the party. Republicans have lost control of the chamber and much of the energy they could put toward supporting Mr. Walker in his runoff against Senator Raphael Warnock has gone instead toward an internal fight among Senate Republicans in Washington namely, between Senators Rick Scott and Mitch McConnell over how this cycle was managed.

LOS ANGELES Donald Trump could swing the California governorship to a Republican. Merely by his absence.
Democrats turned out in record numbers when they had Trump to vote against. But in one of the first, large-scale tests of voter enthusiasm for Democrats in the post-Trump era, Californias surprisingly close gubernatorial recall election is laying bare just how hard it may be for the party to motivate its base without Trump as a foil.
Even in this bastion of progressive politics, ominous signs for the Democratic Party are everywhere. A CBS News-YouGov poll last week found voters who cast ballots for Joe Biden were less likely than Trump supporters to be very closely following the recall and less motivated to vote. In a Berkeley-IGS survey, registered Democrats and independent voters were nearly 30 percentage points less likely than Republicans to express a high level of interest in voting in the election.
Can Democrats win without having Trump as their foil? This is the challenge, said Gray Davis, the former California governor who was recalled in 2003.

The 2024 presidential election may still be three years away, but Republicans have already begun to jockey for their places in the primary.
Former President Trumps repeated hints that he could mount another bid for the White House remains perhaps the biggest obstacle for other would-be contenders.
While none have spoken definitively about their plans for 2024, many potential candidates have already started networking with GOP leaders and donors in key states while testing out campaign messages in public appearances.
Here are the 10 Republicans most likely to run for president in 2024:
Donald TrumpTrump has been teasing the possibility of a 2024 comeback almost from the moment he left the Oval Office, and his hints have gotten more brazen in recent months.
Hes avoided offering specifics about his thought process, though hes repeatedly said that his supporters will be very happy with his decision.
A campaign announcement likely isnt imminent. In an interview with Fox News published in early November, Trump said that he will probably wait until after the 2022 midterm elections to announce whether or not hell make another run for the White House.
If he does jump into the race, hed start off as the instant favorite to win the nomination at least for now. A Politico-Morning Consult poll released in mid-December found that 69 percent of Republican voters want Trump to mount a 2024 comeback bid.

Another likely contender is Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who won his 2022 reelection race by nearly 20 points. The Washington Post reported that the commanding win especially compared with Trump-endorsed candidates’ lackluster results in the midterm puts DeSantis in a good position to challenge Trump on the national stage.
The conservative anti-tax Club for Growth released a polling memo Tuesday showing DeSantis leading Trump by 11 points among Iowa Republicans, 48% to 37%. That’s a shift from August, when the same poll showed Trump leading 52% to 37%.
Already, Trump began his attack on DeSantis, calling him disloyal and coining the nickname Ron DeSanctimonious. Trump also took aim at Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, another possible contender in 2024, mocking his name by saying it “sounds Chinese.”
Other 2024 potential candidates include former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, U.S. Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, and conservative radio host Larry Elder. Many candidates have already been frequent visitors to Iowa.

Woolson and Vander Plaats agree there is room for a healthy slate of candidates for the Iowa caucuses. Woolson predicted that, even if Trump wins Iowa, the first-in-the-nation caucuses may reveal weaknesses in his campaign.

Leadership Acrimony In The Senate
The schism over Trump drove the most serious challenge to McConnells Republican leadership in the Senate in 15 years. The Kentucky senator was reelected easily by his conference on Wednesday but had to endure unprecedented criticism of his stewardship following an attempt by Florida Sen. Rick Scott to take his job.
Supporters of Scott, who ran despite heavy criticism of his management of the GOPs Senate campaign arm in the midterms, framed their critiques of McConnell in Trumpian tones.
I ran for Senate because we need OUTSIDERS to take on the D.C. swamp and get RESULTS, Indiana Sen. Mike Braun said in a statement. Hoosier conservative Republicans are sick and tired of the status quo. Im proud to support my friend and fellow conservative outsider Rick Scott for our Leader.
Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley, a possible future Republican presidential candidate who had said he would not back McConnell for leader, has spent recent days slamming his party for its failure to win popular vote majorities and declaring that the midterms were its funeral.
At times, he appeared to be hinting at criticism of Trump, though in his comments on Wednesday, he went after the Kentucky Republican and confirmed he voted for Scott.
I think Senator McConnells view is that Trump is largely to blame, and that Republicans have an image problem because of Trump. I have to say that I dont agree with that, he told CNNs Manu Raju.

Texas GOP Governor Greg Abbott is facing a challenging re-election fight against Beto ORourke, the popular and charismatic former U.S,. Congressman and Democratic presidential candidate who is now his partys gubernatorial nominee.
Texas voters have had to face mismanagement of the states electric grid, with hundreds of Texans dying in winter after the snowstorm that sent Senator Ted Cruz to Cancun, the horrific elementary school mass shooting in Uvalde, and Abbott spending millions of taxpayer dollars on anti-immigrant programs, including bussing migrants to Democratic-controlled cities like Washington, D.C. and New York City. Not to mention his support of the vigilante abortion ban and a Dont Say Gay bill, his failed promise to end rape, and the fact that Texas leads the nation in mass shootings.

Big Money Searches For A New Candidate
There is no clear evidence yet that Trumps vaunted base is splintering. But some big GOP donors are already voting with their wallets.
On Wednesday, for instance, Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman, a one-time Trump booster, distanced himself and his formidable fundraising muscle from the former president over his 2020 election-denial obsession.
America does better when its leaders are rooted in today and tomorrow, not today and yesterday, Schwarzman said in a statement sent to CNN. It is time for the Republican party to turn to a new generation of leaders and I intend to support one of them in the presidential primaries. The defection was first reported by Axios.
Another GOP megadonor, Citadels Ken Griffin, recently indicated he would side with DeSantis, a former Trump protégé if he runs in 2024. The Club for Growth, an influential conservative group, which was once supportive of Trump, also seems to be moving on, and is touting its polls showing DeSantis leading the former president in key states.
The drumbeat of the GOPs big money donors turning on Trump is sharpening the showdown among party grandees about party philosophy.
Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, a possible 2024 Republican candidate, also seemed to criticize Trump in a tweet. We need more seriousness, less noise, Pompeo wrote, dismissing Republicans who are staring into the rear view mirror claiming victimhood.
Sen Tom Cotton Of Arkansas
Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas has been busy giving speeches, endorsing candidates and recruiting people for what looks like a presidential campaign operation, be it for 2024 or beyond.
During a September visit to Iowa, where he campaigned for local candidates, Cotton told Fox News he didn’t want to speculate on “far off” elections, but is focused on GOP efforts to win back Congress.
“Those races and further off from that will work themselves out when we get there,” Cotton said.

Trump’s 2024 Run For President Gets Mixed Reception From Local Republican Party Leaders
PITTSBURGH – Former President Donald Trump’s plan to run again for president is getting mixed reviews from local Republican Party leaders.
As KDKA political editor Jon Delano reports, some think he may not be the strongest candidate to retake the White House in two years.
Trump does not have a lock on the Republican nomination in 2024 because Republicans want a winner, says Allegheny County Republican Party chair Sam DeMarco.
“Republicans are determined to win in 2024, and I think some of the lessons that we can take away from 2022 is that we need to vote strategically in the primaries and select the candidate that we believe is best positioned to win in the fall,” says DeMarco.
DeMarco says he welcomes other candidates like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former Vice President Mike Pence to demonstrate how they can attract independents and Democrats more than Trump.
“We believe that competition breeds excellence. I invite whoever believes that they are best prepared to lead this party and this country to put their hat forward, to step forward, to run here in the 2024 primary.”
As for Trump, says DeMarco, “We need to take and set aside folks that we like or we may have supported in the past or may think of supporting in the future and focus on: where is the electorate today? What are they asking or crying out for?”
