RICHMOND, Ky. At 5 a.m. on Election Day, Mark Nickolas awoke to write a speech he thought would never be delivered.

Mr. Nickolas, the campaign manager for Amy McGrath, one of the Democratic Partys most high-profile candidates for Congress, quickly drafted a 400-word concession, printed it, sealed it in an envelope, and then deleted it from his computer.

He had hoped to burn it after Ms. McGrath claimed victory. Instead, at 8:28 p.m., he pulled out the envelope and handed it to her.

Ms. McGraths loss to Representative Andy Barr in this central Kentucky congressional district made vivid the yawning divide between rural America and the rest of the nation. Her campaigns election model called for her to win 57 percent of the vote in Fayette County, home of the districts largest city, Lexington, and the University of Kentucky. She won almost 60 percent.

But she underperformed in Franklin County, home of the state capital, Frankfort, and more important, Mr. Barr ran up the score in the districts 17 rural counties. As with so many of the nations House districts, the rural stretches were not receptive to the campaign pitches that drove urban and young voters.

Amy McGrath, a retired Marine Corps fighter pilot recruited by national Democrats to mount a long-shot bid against Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, has prevailed in her partys Senate primary in Kentucky.

McGrath held off a late surge from Charles Booker, a state legislator who tapped into the energy of the movement for racial justice and won endorsements from several high-profile liberals on the national stage.

The race had remained too close to call on Election Day last week as many absentee ballots had yet to be counted. Booker held a narrow advantage over McGrath in a large field based on early and in-person totals released a week ago.

But McGrath made up ground as more votes were tallied, according to , and benefited from early voting. On Tuesday, Edison Research projected that McGrath would win the nomination. She had 45.4 percent of the vote compared with Bookers 42.6 percent, with more than 99 percent of precincts reporting.

She also congratulated Booker for his very impressive result and urged party unity in seeking to oust McConnell .

McConnell, who is seeking a seventh term, easily prevailed in the Republican primary last week.

Mcgrath Has Seen A Boost From Strong Fundraising

McGrath has been a powerhouse fundraiser, bringing in $88 million as of October, compared to McConnells $55 million, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. This funding has enabled the campaign to put out expansive advertising, highlighting McGraths biography as a Marine Corps fighter pilot and her stance as a more centrist Democrat.

As Voxs Ella Nilsen has reported, McGrath established herself as an insurgent candidate in 2018, when she won a primary for a House seat in the states Sixth District after launching a viral ad that highlighted her two decades of service in the Marine Corps. For the 2020 Senate race, Democrats saw McGraths ideological positioning and record as a veteran as key assets for taking on McConnell.

A close primary challenge from progressive state Rep. Charles Booker suggested that her more moderate approach wasnt resonating with some voters, however. And in the primary and general elections, McGraths campaign has been marred by some missteps, including muddled political stances.

In 2019, she said she would have voted to confirm Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, then quickly changed her position. And during the primary with Booker, he criticized her initial response to protests against racism and police brutality. In recent weeks, like many other registered Democrats in Kentucky, I received multiple phone calls, text messages, and postcards from the McGrath campaign and those supporting her. As someone that has phone banked in the past, and plans to vote for her, I wasn’t annoyed by the calls, but I was surprised where they were coming from. Area codes from New York, Connecticut, and California, rather than Kentucky. This is part of a pattern.

McGrath has raised a record-breaking $46 million for her senatorial campaign, but more than 95% of that money is not from the Bluegrass State. The Center for Responsive Politics has found that McGrath raised more money from the New York City, Los Angeles, DC, and Boston metro areas individually than from the state that she’s running in.

To be clear: this isn’t disqualifying. Her opponent, Republican six-term incumbent, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, has similarly raised more than 90% of his campaign funds from out of state. Both campaigns recently reported having more than $16 million cash on hand. And in a state with cheap media markets, neither one needs much more for the remaining five weeks between now and the election.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — U.S. Senate candidate Amy McGrath said she vehemently opposes Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnells plan to hold pre-election confirmation hearings to replace the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

McGrath, a former U.S. Marine and fighter pilot hopes to unseat McConnell in the November election. McConnel has served in the Senate since 1985 and, according to a recent poll by Quinnipiac University, retains a sizable lead among likely voters.

Ginsburg died Friday, and McConnell said a nominee of President Donald Trump would receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate.

McGrath, at a campaign stop at the University of Kentucky, criticized McConnell plan, because in 2016, during President Barack Obamas last year, the senate majority leader refused to give Obamas nominee, Judge Merrick Garland, a hearing on the Senate floor, after Justice Antonin Scalia had died.

At the time, in February 2016, McConnell said, The American people should have a voice in the election of their next Supreme Court Justice. That approach has become known as the McConnell rule.

McGrath said that now McConnell wants to change his own rule.

McConnell disagrees and said he blocked Obamas pick to “check and balance the last days of a lame-duck president’s second term.”
