Brady Gets The Upper Hand On Bill Belichick
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The first battle between Bill Belichick and Tom Brady goes to the quarterback. With a minute remaining in the game, kicker Nick Folk’s 56-yard field goal attempt through the New England rain was no good, clinching the Buccaneers a 19-17 victory in Brady’s first trip back to Gillette Stadium since leaving the organization as a free agent in the spring of 2020.
After trailing by one with 4:34 to play in the game, Brady was able to move the Buccaneers offense 45 yards down the field to set up a Ryan Succop field goal to give Tampa Bay the edge. At that point, Bruce Arians’ defense was able to fend off New England’s offense from setting up a more manageable field goal attempt with the clock ticking under a minute. Brady finished his night completing 22 of his 43 throws for 269 yards.
While the Buccaneers were able to come out on top, it was a valiant effort by the Patriots, especially by rookie quarterback Mac Jones, who at one point completed 19 straight passes. Jones finished 31 of 40 passing for 275, two touchdowns and an interception.
Prior to the game, Brady was honored with a one-minute video tribute by the Patriots, highlighting his many accomplishments with the franchise. The Gillette Stadium video board also recognized when Brady surpassed Drew Brees to become the NFL’s all-time leading passer early in the first quarter with a pass to Mike Evans.
Playoff Drought And Revolving Door At Head Coach
During the 2008 offseason, the Bucs re-signed head coach Gruden and general manager Allen through the 2011 season. They also acquired former players Warrick Dunn, who had spent the last 6 seasons with the Falcons, and Brian Griese, who was the starting quarterback for the team in 2005 until a knee injury sidelined him for the remainder of the year. Chris Simms was finally released, having not played in a game since his injury in 2006. The Bucs got off to a great start in 2008, with a 93 record going into the final month of the season, tied for first place in the division, with a chance at the top seed in the conference. On December 2, it was announced that defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin would be leaving the team after the season’s end, for the same job at the University of Tennessee, serving under his son Lane Kiffin, who had just been named the new head coach at the school. After the announcement, the Buccaneers would lose their final four games of the season to finish 97 for the second consecutive season. Unlike 2007, it was not enough to secure the division championship, nor a playoff appearance.

The 2009 squad started out 07, behind Leftwich and later Josh Johnson. Following their bye week, the team elevated Freeman to starting quarterback, resulting in the team’s first win of the season. The team finished 313, the worst record since 1991.

It Never Should Have Come To This For Tom Brady And Bill Belichick
Patriots rookie Mac Jones finished 31 of 40 for 275 yards and two touchdowns.
I have a long way to go, and I just try to put my best foot forward every day, and we all want to win, Jones said.
The Buccaneers were hurt by multiple mistakes on defense and spotty special teams play marked by poor punts, a missed early field goal and costly penalties.
But Tampa was able to come up with timely plays to stay in the game, including Antoine Winfield Jr. forcing a fumble by J.J. Taylor that was recovered by Richard Sherman playing his first game since signing a one-year deal last week to thwart a promising drive early in the third quarter.
Down 17-16, Brady and the Buccaneers took over on their own 25 and needed just seven plays drive to the Patriots 30. After Antonio Brown failed to hang onto a pass in the end zone Succop calmly connected on a 48-yarder with 2:02 left.
Leading 7-6, the Patriots punted and Matt Slater appeared to recover a fumble by Jaydon Mickens. But an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Slater negated the play.
The Bucs took over and finished an eight-play, 52-yard drive with an 8-yard scoring run by Ronald Jones.
The Patriots responded on their next possession, using six straight completions by Jones to drive to the Bucs 1. Jones then found Jonnu Smith in back of the end zone for to put the Patriots back in front 14-13.
Tampa marched to the Patriots 8 on their ensuing drive before being forced to settle for Succops third field goal to make it 16-14.

Tom Brady Beats Patriots In New England Return 19
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. Tom Brady brought two decades of touchdown passes, victories and championships to New England.
He returned and reminded his former team what they’re missing.
Brady was 22 of 43 for 269 yards with no touchdowns, but engineered the fourth-quarter drive to beat the team he led to six Lombardi trophies. Ronald Jones added an 8-yard scoring run for defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay .
Brady said the Patriots made them earn the win on an emotional night for him.
”It’s not that I would predict what would happen,” Brady said. ”There were a few emotional moments thinking about the people that meant so much in my life. My football journey took me somewhere else.”
Brady broke Drew Brees’ NFL career passing yardage record and became the fourth quarterback with victories against all 32 NFL teams, joining Brees, Brett Favre and Peyton Manning.
”In crunch time when we needed a field goal, he got us down the field,” Bucs coach Bruce Arians said. ”He wasn’t going to make any mistakes that cost us the game.”
New England had a chance to win, but Nick Folk’s 56-yard field-goal try hit the left upright with less than a minute to play. The Patriots are 1-3 for the first time since 2001. Bill Belichick dropped to 8-12 since Brady left New England.

Jones Beyond His Years In The Quarterback Age Gap
Mac Jones was born the day Brady made his first college start for the Michigan Wolverines. The age gap of 21 years, one month and two days between the opposing quarterbacks made NFL history during Sundays matchup. Not lost in the gap was the rookies opportunity to close it.
In the no-huddle spread, Jones completed his first three pass attempts against Tampa Bay before New Englands drive stalled. But the Alabama product finished 31-of-40 for 275 yards. He found Hunter Henry underneath for a touchdown that gave the Patriots a 7-3 lead in the second quarter. He then found fellow tight end Jonnu Smith for another play-action strike that gave his side a 14-13 lead in the fourth quarter.
Jones would be sacked by defensive frontmen Shaq Barrett, William Gholston as well as Joe Tryon-Shoyinka twice. Hed be intercepted by safety Antoine Winfield Jr. as blitzing linebacker Devin White hit home unaccounted for. Issues in protection were not limited to the right tackle spot, where starter Trent Browns calf strain sent him the inactives list for a third straight week as Justin Herron and Yasir Durant split snaps. But Jones hung in, at one point completing 19 consecutive passes.
Tom Brady Breaks Nfl Career Passing Yards Record In Gillette Stadium Return To Beat Patriots
From the moment the NFL schedule came out with the Buccaneers playing at New England, to the rainy night that concluded with, of course, a victory at Gillette Stadium, Tom Brady knew this would be very different.
He admitted to getting emotional about facing the Patriots on Sunday night in “a great stadium for me.” He mentioned the “Patriots-type weather” and the supportive crowd — for the home team, not for the visiting quarterback. He even recognized how annoying “the foghorn” that rallies the New England defense can be.
Oh yeah, he also cherished a 19-17 victory that was anything but vintage Brady, but was good enough.
“These are people I shared my life with and I’m grateful for everything they contributed to my life,” Brady said. “I feel like I always will be a part of the community.
“It was just emotional moments thinking about coming up here and playing. It’s a tough football environment. The crowd was into it.”
The seven-time Super Bowl champion, six with the Patriots, struggled in the rainy conditions much of the evening. He was booed — often.
Being Brady, he also won.
Brady took Tampa Bay on a 45-yard drive aided by a 31-yard pass interference penalty, and Ryan Succop made a 48-yard field goal for a 19-17 victory. While most of the game was not a classic for the 44-year-old quarterback, the march to victory seemed fitting in a place Brady has won 135 of 158 games.
The final score was far more typical of Brady in New England.

Gronk Tosses Sergio Brown On A Block
Never forget the time Gronk threw Sergio Brown out the club.
This was a Rob Gronkowski moment that also came with a good sound bite. The Patriots were playing the Indianapolis Colts in November 2014, and defeated them by a score of 42-20. He had four catches for 71 yards and a touchdown. He also showed off his blocking prowess.
He grabbed Indianapolis Colts defender Sergio Brown, and threw him away from the play. The play resulted in a flag, but as far as the tight end was concerned, he did his job.
He was just yappin at me the whole time, Gronkowski told media. So I took him and threw him out of the club. I was the bouncer, picked him up and tossed him out of the club on that one touchdown. So that was perfect.
It was truly a Gronk-esque moment if there ever was one. between the legendary quote and the play itself, its one Patriots fans will not ever forget.
Jon Gruden Era First Super Bowl Championship
Dungy was fired by the Buccaneers following a 31-9 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wildcard Round of 2001 and soon thereafter hired as the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, while the Bucs mounted a search for his replacement that would include numerous names and rejections. Several potential candidates were offered the job, including University of Florida head coach Steve Spurrier, former New York Giants head coach Bill Parcells, and Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator . Spurrier jumped to the Redskins when he was offered the most lucrative salary package ever offered to an NFL head coach, and Parcells eventually passed on the Bucs’ offerthe second time he had done so in the history of the franchise. Bucs’ general manager Rich McKay threw his support behind Lewis. The Glazer brothers were so displeased with the selection of yet another defensive-minded coach that they overruled McKay and took control of the candidate search themselves. They made it clear that their top choice was Jon Gruden however, he was still under contract with the Oakland Raiders.
While talks with the Raiders were secretly underway, the Glazers publicly pursued another respected offensive mind, San Francisco 49ers head coach Steve Mariucci. Just when initial reports indicated that Mariucci had agreed to become both the Bucs’ head coach and their general manager, Raiders owner Al Davis agreed to release Gruden to Tampa Bay.
What To Look For
- The New England Patriots own a 59-18 record vs. NFC teams since realignment in 2002, the best inter-conference record in the NFL during that time.
- The Patriots have gone 89 straight games scoring in the first half, an NFL record. The Patriots also own the second-longest streak at 82 games with a first-half score . The last time the Patriots failed to score in the first half was a 16-0 loss at home against Buffalo on Oct. 2, 2016.
Why The Patriots Lost
They didn’t take advantage of the Buccaneers’ offensive struggles. Tampa totaled just six points on five first-half drives, but the Patriots could manage only a 7-6 lead at the break. The Pats held Brady to just 6.3 yards per attempt as he completed only 22 of 43 passes, but the Patriots gave up several crucial third-down conversions and took uncharacteristic penalties at inopportune times. They also made a couple puzzling decisions to punt the ball back to Tampa. Given two chances to hold a one-point lead in the fourth quarter, the Pats let Brady walk down the field to retake the lead each time.
