New England Patriots Thursday Night Game

Be Disciplined Against Outside Zone Runs

What Goes into Preparing an NFL Stadium for a CRAZY Weather Game? | Buffalo Bills

The Patriots are no stranger when it comes to defending outside zone. They are coming off back-to-back games against teams heavily featuring this type of running scheme, with both the Carolina Panthers and the Cleveland Browns having the athletically impressive linemen to run it.

New England, of course, has found plenty of success against zone runs the last two weeks. How did the clubs defense do it? By out-muscling the offensive linemen up front, and by patiently but effectively reading the keys.

The following run for no gain is a good example of that:

Aligning in a 3-4 bear front, the Patriots are quick to engage the blockers in front of them without allowing much movement to the second level. The down-linemen Lawrence Guy , Carl Davis and Davon Godchaux play an important role, moving with the flow of the play. The key, however, is the linebackers quickly getting up the field to disrupt those second-level blockers from opening lanes for Christian McCaffrey to attack.

In this particular play, off-the-ball linebacker JaWhaun Bentley needs to be mentioned. He shoots downhill immediately and knocks the Panthers right guard back upon contact. That is enough to disrupt the play, and allow backside linebacker Matthew Judon to come in with the clean-up tackle.

If the Patriots defense is able to play the game like this reading the keys properly and bringing raw power against athleticism they should be in a good position to stop the Falcons zone-based running game.

Dugger Shines With Pbu On Pitts : 36 Pm

Very nice PBU on that third-down pass play by Kyle Dugger on Kyle Pitts who didnt play the first two snaps of the game for some reason. Going to be interesting to seesaw the Falcons try and scheme up situations to get Pitts open. Motion? Trick plays? I would think that just about anything is in play for a shorthanded Atlanta offense and its best player. Anyway, Atlanta has punted the ball back to New England. Its scoreless with 9:52 left in the first quarter.

First Quarter: Patriots 3 Falcons 0

8:55 p.m.: Damien Harris rushes for 14 yards after Jones completes to Harry for nine yards. Harris rushes for another 17 yards on the following play to give the Patriots a first down at the Atlanta 36.

8:53 p.m.: Ryan fires consecutive incomplete passes and forces the Falcons to punt. Colquitt punts for 50 yards to position the Patriots at their own 24.

8:50 p.m.: Ryan completes to Gage for a 12-yard gain, then completes to him again for one yard pickup at the 26.

8:48 p.m.: Ryan completes a short pass to Davis for six yards and is pushed out at the 16.

8:47 p.m.: Avery Williams makes the return for the Falcons and rushes for 28 yards. An offensive holding penalty against Sean Williams pushes the Falcons back to their own 10.

8:45 p.m.: FIELD GOAL PATRIOTS. Nick Folk kicks a 32-yard field goal and puts the Patriots on the board first. Patriots lead 3-0 with 5:15 remaining in the first quarter.

8:41 p.m.: Jones rushes for two yards and gives the Patriots a first down from the 17.

8:39 p.m.: Stevenson rushes for 21 yards and is pushed out of bounds by Harmon at the Atlanta 28.

8:37 p.m.: Jones fires a short pass up the middle to Smith for 17 yards, giving New England a first down from the 49.

8:34 p.m.: Colquitt punts 51 yards to the New England 44. A holding penalty against Cody Davis forces the Patriots to punt on their second drive.

Ben Rolfe writes: “The Patriots have been extremely impressive over the past few weeks, and their win against the Browns underlines their position as potential AFC contenders. Meanwhile, the Falcons just got embarrassed by the Cowboys in Dallas and will be desperate to show they are not as bad as that game looked. Thursday Night Football games are always tricky, but this should be one the Patriots win. The Falcons have lost two of their last three and have been susceptible on defense at times. The only danger for New England is they peek too far into the future with games against the Titans and Bills upcoming.”

Why Karras Instead Of Onwenu : 05 Pm

Week 17 recap: Cincinnati Bengals, Tennessee Titans secure divisions | SNF | NBC Sports

Seeing a lot of questions on social media about why the Patriots are starting Ted Karras ahead of Mike Onwenu, especially when you consider Onwenus overall excellence since he arrived prior to last season. Its important to remember and its something that has been borne out in my conversations with offensive linemen and coaches over the years that the position is unique in that you prioritize finding the five players that play the best together. That doesnt mean that also cant be the five best players. Its just that from the perspective of the coaching staff, its likely that Karras has become such a seamless part of the group that it makes sense to have him in the starting lineup with that combination. Again, like I said, Onwenu is there in case of emergency. But its important to consider the state of how those five Wynn, Karras, Andrews, Mason and Brown all work together before you start thinking about making a switch.

The Falcons were held to a season-low 165 yards and averaged only 3.2 yards per offensive play. The Patriots defense had a ton of big plays, as Kyle Van Noy racked up two sacks and had a pick six late in the fourth quarter while three other New England defenders tallied interceptions.

Mac Jones relied on a heavy dose of short, safe passes to go 22-for-26 for 207 yards while adding a 19-yard touchdown throw to Nelson Agholor on an intermediate crossing route in second quarter.

Nick Folk continued his tremendous season, going 4-for-4 on field goals, including a season-best 53-yarder in the third quarter.

New England Patriots Take On Atlanta Falcons In Thursday Night Game

ATLANTA

Tom Brady has moved on to win a seventh championship at Tampa Bay.

Only a handful of Atlanta players remain from that fateful night in Houston.

Yet memories of the greatest comeback — and flop — in Super Bowl history still linger, especially when the Falcons are facing the New England Patriots.

The teams meet Thursday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, exactly 1,747 days since the Brady-led Patriots rallied from a 28-3 deficit to beat the Falcons 34-28 in overtime at the 51st Super Bowl.

Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan, one of only a handful of players left from the team that couldn’t hold a 25-point lead, said he’s long since put that miserable evening in the rearview mirror.

Im not worried about what happened in the winter of 2017, he said. You cant go back and win that game.

Brady captured one more championship with the Patriots – at a Super Bowl played in Atlanta, no less – before signing in 2020 with the Buccaneers, who face the Falcons twice a year as a divisional rival.

Rubbing a bit more salt in the wound, Brady has won three more games against Atlanta with his new team.

None of that matters to Ryan, who is more concerned about these Falcons and how poorly he played in an ugly 43-3 loss to the Dallas Cowboys last Sunday.

Nothing that happens Thursday night will have any impact on that Super Bowl from five seasons ago.

Patriots Star Has Blunt Comment About Thursday Night Games

Its no secret that most NFL players arent fans of Thursday Night Football. Among them is Patriots veteran defensive back Devin McCourty.

Its hard enough for players to recover from a typical work week. Let alone an abbreviated one.

Ahead of a Thursday night matchup against the Falcons, the two-time Pro Bowler sounded off on the short week grind.

Devin McCourty Live Postgame Press Conference:

New England Patriots

Quite frankly, it sucks to play Sunday and then have to play again Thursday,McCourty said.

The Pats DB does say that the extra rest afterwards is a bit of a silver lining. However, its tough on guys.

You gotta push through mentally and continue to tell yourself that and go out there and try to play a good game,McCourty continued.

Theres two teams going through the same thing and itll come down to who out-prepares each other, who can recover better, all those little things in a short amount of time play a big factor come Thursday night.

After falling to 2-4 with a tough loss to Dallas, Devin McCourty says he’s felt a different energy during the ‘ 3-game winning streak.

“Bill came in and was like: ‘Get out of here. Take Monday and Tuesday off, come back Wednesday ready to work.'”

NFL on CBS

For all of its loathing, Thursday Night Football isnt something that the NFLPA has ever taken a hard stance on.

The Patriots and Falcons kick off Week 11 at 8:20 PM in Atlanta.
