Conservative Wins Republican State Primary In Illinois

Rejecting the advice of party leaders to pick a centrist woman to run against Senator Carol Moseley-Braun, voters in the Illinois Republican primary today nominated a conservative man, Peter Fitzgerald, who is a strong opponent of abortion and gun control.
And in the Democratic primary for governor, Glenn Poshard, a five-term Congressman, posted a solid victory by building strong support in downstate regions and in working-class neighborhoods of Chicago.
Mr. Poshard, 51, who ran with strong support from organized labor, will face Republican George Ryan, the Illinois Secretary of State. Both Mr. Poshard and Mr. Ryan oppose abortion. Although Illinois voters have not elected a Democrat as governor in more than 22 years, Mr. Poshard demonstrated an impressive ability to build a coalition between voters in rural areas and those in heavily Catholic, largely unionized Chicago neighborhoods.
Mr. Poshard’s victory was a blow to Roland Burris, the former state Attorney General, a black candidate who had hoped to fashion a victory with support from blacks in Chicago and voters in downstate Illinois, his native region.
While Chicago was the scene of racial hostility in the mid-80’s, Illinois has been a beacon of opportunity for black candidates.
Ms. Didrickson, the state’s comptroller, is a supporter of abortion rights, and sponsored a measure to outlaw assault weapons. But she supported the death penalty.

Its a year out from the Illinois gubernatorial election and Republicans vying for the job hope theres momentum from the Republican victory in Virginia Tuesday.
Virginians elected their first Republican governor in 12 years by picking Glenn Youngkin over Democrat Terry McAuliffe. Analysts across the country say that could signal a trend giving Republicans an advantage heading into the November 2022 midterm elections. Thats also when Illinoisans cast votes for governor.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker, a first-term Democrat who unseated former Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner in 2018, is up for reelection next year.
Four Republicans are vying for the GOP nomination. The primary is in June.
State Sen. Darren Bailey, R-Xenia, said the outcome in Virginia signals changes.
I think we saw parents that are sick and tired of government telling them how to protect their children, how to teach their children, Bailey said.
One of the major issues in the Virginia race was how school districts are handling certain curriculum touching on issues of race and other school policies.
Businessman Gary Rabine said voters in Virginia rejected far-left policies and he expects Illinoisans will do the same next year.
Messages seeking reaction from Pritzkers campaign and the Democratic Party of Illinois were not returned.

With the date change for the primary election would come a host of other changes to the schedule of the election cycle.
Under the proposal, petitions from candidates would begin on Jan. 13 and be filed with the Illinois State Board of Elections between March 7 and 14, residents would be able to seek vote-by-mail ballots beginning March 30 and no later than June 23, and in-person early voting would begin May 19 – among other changes.
The measure comes as lawmakers await the release of “block-level” population and demographic data from the 2020 Census, which is not scheduled to be released until mid-August at the earliest.
The data is usually given to states in March each year following the Census, in time for states to use it in the redistricting process. But this cycle’s delay puts the data release well after the June 30 deadline for new maps that’s mandated in the Illinois Constitution.

Democratic Primary For Secretary Of State
The Democratic primary for Secretary of State is heating up, and only two candidates remain. Pat Dowell announced her candidacy for Congresss IL-01 on January 5th, leaving Alexi Giannoulias and Anna Valencia as the only two candidates left in the race. Dowell raised $139K in the last quarter of 2021, leaving her with $477K in her campaign coffers at the start of her new congressional campaign.
Alexi Giannoulias had another strong fundraising quarter and reported over $658K in contributions. His campaign begins 2022 with over $4 million in the bank, which is an impressive amount for this point in the campaign. A helpful comparison from POLITICO Illinois Playbook: Attorney General Kwame Raoul had raised about $1.1 million at the same point in his contested primary for another open seat.
Anna Valencia took in $331K last quarter, and her campaign starts the year with $882K cash on hand. Neither candidate is particularly strong in small-dollar donations, though Valencia has a slight edge: she raised over $15K in donations of $150 or less last quarter, accounting for 4.6% of her total contributions. For comparison, Giannoulias received $6K in donations of $150 or less, or 0.98% of his total contributions.
State Rep Darren Bailey
Bailey gained notoriety when he sued Pritzker over the governors use of executive orders to establish restrictions to slow the spread of COVID-19.
The Republican from Xenia, in southern Illinois, was also escorted out of the House of Representatives for refusing to wear a face covering. His obstinance even drew scorn from his fellow House Republicans, and Bailey quietly returned to the House floor with a face covering the next day.
Hes also supported separating Illinois from Chicago or kicking Chicago out of the state, depending on how you look at it. Come January, Bailey will be a state senator, after winning an uncontested election to the open seat. A spokesman said that Bailey has not made any decisions about running for governor.

Finding Your Congressional And Legislative Districts
For both Congress and General Assembly seats, the best way to find the district you are in, especially since district maps are changing, is to go online to the Illinois Board of Elections website, www.elections.il.gov.
Under the heading “Voter Services,” click on “Find My Elected Officials.” You’ll find a map of Illinois. Click on the map and you’ll see the state with a large white screen to the right. At the top of the white screen, type your address in the window under the words “Find My Elected Representative.”
A list of offices will appear, including one called “2022 United States Congressperson.” When you click on this link, you will see the congressional district you are in under the new map.
For your state Senate district, click on the link called “2022 Senator,” and for your House district, click on “2022 State Representative.”
You will not see any current officials named at these links. To see your current congressmen or legislators, you can click on the appropriate links listed, but remember, it will show you the current officials. They may change under the new maps.

State Sen Jason Barickman
The Bloomington lawmaker has spent nearly a decade in Springfield, and while he is a loyal Republican, he is perhaps best known for his votes on high-profile legislation that have not been in line with his fellow GOP lawmakers.
Barickman was the only Republican state senator to vote in favor of the 2013 bill that legalized same-sex marriage in Illinois. He was also one of the few Republicans to support the legalization of cannabis in the state.

Filing For The 2022 Illinois Primary

Monday, March 7, 2022, is the first day of filing for people who want to run in this years Democratic and Republican primaries in Illinois. Candidates lined up outside the State Board of Elections office in Springfield for hours before it opened. We visited the line to hear some of their stories.
Plus, we were joined by two veteran statehouse reporters to talk about the state of some of the races.

Republican Primary For Governor
The fight for the Republican nomination for governor is heating up now that Aurora mayor Richard Irvin announced his bid on Monday.
Gary Rabine and Darren Bailey raised the most money last quarter, although Jesse Sullivan still has a runaway lead in cash on hand with over $9.1 million in the bank. Bailey has $707K, Rabine has $548K, and Paul Schimpf has $80K in cash on hand.
Each campaign, though, spent almost as much or more than they raised last quarter, and no candidate has come close to matching Governor Pritzkers reelection war chest. Rabine reported $580K in contributions and spent $470K, Darren Bailey reported raising $499K and spending $794K, Schimpf raised $61K and spent $54K, and Sullivan reported $293K in contributions and $1.2 million in expenditures last quarter. Meanwhile, the Chicago Tribune noted that Pritzker spent more in the last three months more than $9.9 million than the GOP candidate with the most cash had on hand.
The game is about to change completely, however, now that Ken Griffin has decided to support Mayor Irvin, and we can expect Governor Pritzkers financial advantage to shrink dramatically.

State Sen Paul Schimpf
The Waterloo Republican chose not to seek re-election to his seat in the Illinois senate, leaving it open as to whether he would run for higher office.
Schimpf, who lost a 2014 bid for Illinois Attorney General, is a retired Marine and attorney who helped prosecute Saddam Hussein. In the senate, he was the lead Republican on the Veterans Affairs committee that investigated multiple Legionnaires disease outbreaks at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy.
Schimpf would not comment on a possible gubernatorial run. Multiple Republicans told WBEZ Schimpf is taking a look at running.

Early Voting In Person
Limited early in-person voting begins at county clerk’s offices and some temporary community locations on May 19. On June 13, early voting expands to permanent locations other than the clerk’s office — such as village halls or a similar public sites — and polls must be open on holidays and weekends until early voting ends on June 27.

Heading into the 2018 election, the Republican Party’s legislative record during Donald Trumps presidency figured into several Republican primaries. This record included the passage of major tax legislation in December 2017 and the confirmation of federal judges. It also included a $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill in March 2018, which Trump opposed, and unsuccessful efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act.
Trump, himself, also played a role in Republican primaries. His approval rating reached 90% in June among self-described Republicans, according to a Gallup survey. Many Republican candidates campaigned on their support for Trump, and negative ads accusing opponents of criticizing the president were common. A May report found Trump’s name or image had appeared in 37% of all Republican campaign ads at that point in 2018.
