Archives Officials Warn Of Consequences
Officials at the archives warn Mr. Trumps representatives that there could be a referral to the Justice Department or an alert to Congress if the former president continues to refuse to comply with the Presidential Records Act.
Mr. Trumps advisers are concerned about who can go through the documents held at Mar-a-Lago, because appropriate clearances are needed to review classified material and it is not immediately obvious what is in them. Mr. Trump ultimately goes through the boxes at the club himself, although he appears not to have gone through them all.
In late December, Mr. Trumps lawyers inform the archives that they have found 12 boxes of documents at Mar-a-Lago and that they are ready for retrieval.

The Donald Trump presidential campaign has been charged with violating the Telephone Consumer Protection Act by sending unwanted political text messages to cellular phones. The Telephone Consumer Protection Act was passed in 1991 under President George H.W. Bush to protect the public from receiving unwanted telemarketer calls. Today, it equally applies to unsolicited text messages.

Like many other organizations that use SMS marketing, the Donald Trump presidential campaign allows supporters to sign up for text message updates by texting an SMS short code. Supporters must supply their zip code in order to be signed up for news from the campaign.
Thornes attorney, Joseph Siprut of Siprut PC, has stated that based on the information we have at this point, were very confident that a violation was made and we intend to pursue it to the gates of hell. As of this writing, the Trump campaign has yet to comment.

The Consequences Trump Could Face For Mishandling White House Records
Update: On Monday, Aug. 8, 2022, the FBI executed a search warrant at former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Florida. Sources tell CBS News the search was related to a Justice Department investigation into Trump’s handling of presidential records.
In the story below, first published on Feb. 10, 2022, shortly after the National Archives referred the matter to the Justice Department, legal experts told CBS News that Trump could face consequences for violating the Presidential Records Act or criminal statutes governing the handling of classified material.
Washington Former President Donald Trump’s alleged improper handling of White House records while he was in office and after he decamped to Florida has prompted fresh scrutiny over whether he flouted federal law and, if he did, whether he can be held accountable for doing so.
The law governing the records-keeping responsibilities of presidents is the Presidential Records Act, which was enacted in 1978 and requires any memos, letters, emails and other documents related to the president’s duties be preserved and given to the National Archives and Records Administration at the end of an administration.
But “the real problem is there’s absolutely no enforcement mechanism in the Presidential Record Act and there’s no administrative enforcement provision,” she said.

What Laws May Trump Have Broken
The warrant gave prosecutors the right to seize records containing evidence in violation of three laws, with code numbers 793, 2071 and 1519.
While the list of items agents took from Mar-a-Lago notes that many of the documents were classified, those three laws deal with mishandling of federal government records regardless of whether or not they are classified.

The law with number 793 prevents unauthorized possession of national defense information, without mentioning whether the records are classified or not. It is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
That law was initially passed under the 1917 Espionage Act, which predates the statutory classification system.
The other laws, 2071 and 1519, make it illegal to conceal or destroy official U.S. documents. They are punishable by up to three and 20 years in prison, respectively. Neither law requires the information in question to be classified.
To obtain the warrant, prosecutors had to persuade a judge they had probable cause to believe the laws may have been violated. Trump has not been charged with any crimes.

A federal judge approves a search warrant for Mar-a-Lago. The government is given 14 days to execute it.
In the application for the search warrant, the Justice Department, using the abbreviation for national defense information, states that there is probable cause to believe that additional documents that contain classified N.D.I. or that are presidential records subject to record retention requirements currently remain at the premises.

Jay I. Bratt, the Justice Departments chief of counterintelligence, visits Mar-a-Lago accompanied by F.B.I. agents. Mr. Trump greets them in the dining room. According to Mr. Trumps lawyers, the former president says: Whatever you need, just let us know.
Mr. Bratt inspects a storage room. Christina Bobb, another of Mr. Trumps lawyers, signs a written statement asserting that to the best of the lawyers understanding, they have turned over the remaining classified material from the White House boxes, satisfying the subpoena, according to several people briefed on the statement.

The Archives Publicly Criticizes Trumps Destruction Of Documents
The archives makes a public statement about Mr. Trumps record-keeping practices, noting that some of the records it received at the end of his administration included paper records that had been torn up by former President Trump.
About a week later, the archives issues another public statement about retrieving documents from Mar-a-Lago, asserting that Mr. Trump still has presidential records that should have been turned over to the archives at the end of his time in office.

Early Life And Business Career
Trump was the fourth of five children of Frederick Christ Trump, a successful real estate developer, and Mary MacLeod. Donalds eldest sister, Maryanne Trump Barry, eventually served as a U.S. district court judge and later as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit until her retirement in 2011. His elder brother, Frederick, Jr. , worked briefly for his fathers business before becoming an airline pilot in the 1960s. Freddys alcoholism led to his early death in 1981, at the age of 43.
Donald Trump attended New York Military Academy , a private boarding school Fordham University in the Bronx and the University of Pennsylvanias Wharton School of Finance and Commerce , where he graduated with a bachelors degree in economics. In 1968, during the Vietnam War, he secured a diagnosis of bone spurs, which qualified him for a medical exemption from the military draft . Upon his graduation Trump began working full-time for his fathers business, helping to manage its holdings of rental housing, then estimated at between 10,000 and 22,000 units. In 1974 he became president of a conglomeration of Trump-owned corporations and partnerships, which he later named the Trump Organization.
