Brenden Moore’s 5 Most Memorable Stories Of 2021

If 2020 was a year of disruption, 2021 was a year of change.

Perhaps no arena saw more change than Illinois government and politics.

Michael Madigan, the longest-serving House speaker in American history, was toppled by his caucus amid a growing corruption probe. In his place rose House Speaker Chris Welch, D-Hillside, who is the first Black person to hold that title.

I wrote several stories about Welch this year, but none was more memorable than when I profiled in late January, when he told me about that fateful question Madigan asked him just a few weeks prior: Chris, do you want to be speaker?

This past summer, I also had the opportunity to profile U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, who has gained a national profile as one of the most vocal Republican critics of former President Donald Trump.

There was also a lot of major policy change in Illinois this year. Not to mention the impacts of policies enacted in previous years, such as recreational marijuana legalization and the Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy.

Some of those topics are addressed in my five most memorable stories of 2021. I hope you can tell through this sampling of my work that I truly love my job. It’s a privilege to tell this state’s stories. As always, thank you for reading.

In his debut episode, Zalewski said it would be an opportunity to talk about things in a longform way without having to go through the typical filters. He and co-host Chris Crisanti of the Illinois-centric think tank Prairie State Policy, offer an insiders view of state government, giving listeners a peek into the heart of Illinois politics and government along with those who participate in that ecosystem.

    Chris Chrisanti

It’s a labor of love, Zalewski said in an interview. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while. Both as an avid podcast listener and somebody that is consistently looking for different ways to get in front of my constituency, podcasting seemed like a really good idea. I’ve enjoyed it. It’s far more labor-intensive than I gave it credit for.

But Zalewski is not the only one getting in on the podcast game.

Of course, there are several podcasts dedicated to state government from news organizations, including NPR Illinois’ “State Week,” and Capitol News Illinois’ “Capitol Cast.”

But now, every legislative caucus under the Illinois Capitol dome now has some sort of audio presence as they seek to directly reach constituents through one of the fastest growing digital mediums in the United States.

Illinois State Rep. Michael Zalewski, D-Riverside, gives a quick synopsis of House Bill 2620, a liquor control reform omnibus bill, to Illinois State Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, on May 31. Zalewski produces a podcast to communicate directly with constituents.

SPRINGFIELD During the spirited effort to pass legalized sports betting in the waning hours of the 2019 spring legislative session, state Rep. Mike Zalewski, D-Riverside, became a semi-regular presence on Chicago sports radio and podcasts explaining the ins and outs of the legislative process and the contents of the proposed legislation.

In a sense, he helped people understand how the sausage was being made, like why, for instance, wagers would not initially be allowed on Illinois collegiate teams. Or why daily fantasy sports operators like DraftKings and FanDuel faced more barriers to entry than brick-and-mortar casinos.

This ability to bring important information to a larger audience, along with the impressive storytelling conveyed in Chicago public radios six-part podcast series “Public Official A,” which chronicled the rise and fall of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, earlier that year, gave Zalewski the audio bug.

    What Is A Precinct Committeeman

A Republican Precinct Committeeman represents the GOP voters of his or her precinct at the County Republican Party level.

But most importantly, a Republican Precinct Committeeman is the face of the GOP within the precinct. In many cases, a Republican Precinct Committeeman might be the only party official a voter ever meets in person.

This volunteer position is really what one makes of it. Some do more than others. But the Republican Precinct Committeemans job is in essence all about helping to grow the GOP and working to deliver the maximum number of Republican votes from his or her precinct on Election Day. Precinct Committeemen comprise the core of any grassroots effort and no political campaign can be successful without these front line GOP ambassadors.

The principle means of doing the job is just an extension of what most people already do talking to the neighbors.

Many people begin their political involvement by becoming a Precinct Committeeman. Its the perfect place to get started for anyone interested in building a better Republican Party and advancing our GOPs values. And many Republicans have remained Precinct Committeemen even years later after being elected to higher public office. For example, its not uncommon to find U.S. Congressmen who are also Precinct Committeemen. They maybe more than anyone appreciate the Precinct Committeemans role.

Republican Precinct Committeeman is an all-volunteer position.

    • Be a resident of Illinois for at least 30 days.
    • Be at least 18 years old .
    • NOT be registered to vote in another state.

A person is not eligible to vote while incarcerated. After completing your sentence your voting rights will be restored.

    Lots Of Consistency Elsewhere

In the rest of the country, there was much more consistency between party registration totals and the 2016 election outcome, with only three non-Southern states voting against the grain. On election eve in Pennsylvania, there were 915,081 more registered Democrats than Republicans Trump carried the state by 44,292 votes. In West Virginia, there were 175,867 more registered Democrats Trump won by 300,577 votes. And in New Hampshire, there were 24,232 more registered Republicans than Democrats in the fall of 2016, but Hillary Clinton took the state by 2,736 votes. Thats it. The other 22 party registration states outside the South were carried in the presidential balloting by the party with more registered voters than the other.

And in many of these in sync states, the registration advantage in recent years has grown more Republican or Democratic as the case may be, augmented by a healthy increase in independents.

The registration trend line in California is a microcosm of sorts of party registration in the nation as whole. Democrats are running ahead and the ranks of the independents are growing. Yet registered voters in both parties appear to be widely engaged. That was the case in 2016, and likely will be again in 2018, with Trump flogging issues to rouse his base. In short, this is a highly partisan era when party registration totals, and the trends that go with them, are well worth watching.
