Representative Marjorie Taylor Greenewho has been stripped of her House committee assignments for writing inflammatory social-media posts, thrown off Twitter for spreading COVID-19 misinformation, and fined more than eighty thousand dollars for violating House rules on masksis facing a primary challenge. Three Republicans are running against her for the Party nomination in Georgias Fourteenth Congressional District, in the northwest corner of the state. The most serious of these challengers, it seems, is Jennifer Strahan, a health-care executive who has tried to portray herself as right-wing, just not loony right-wing. Strahan claims to be uniting conservatives who want a congresswoman who can accomplish something other than managing to embarrass the Republican Party and the entire state of Georgia.
Georgia is an open-primary state, meaning that voters can choose which partys primary they want to participate in. Thus, some of Strahans help could come from people who disagree with her and have no intention of casting a ballot for her in November. All of this raises the question: Should it?
What Is A Primary How Is It Different From A Caucus
The primary is a concept that developed in the early twentieth century to allow citizens to cast their votes anonymously. A primary is like a general election. You go on election day and vote for your preferred candidate in a secret ballot. Depending on the state and the party, the winner will get the majority or all of the stateâs delegates in the national convention. Also, like a general election, itâs funded by the state government.
A caucus, on the other hand is usually conducted publicly where advocates of candidates give speeches to sway voters. A caucus is also funded and organized by party members and not by the states.

In Alabama, the primary election is part of the nominating process for a political party. It is used to select who will represent a party in the general election. You are required to choose one political partys primary over another because you cannot participate in the nomination of both parties candidates. However, in the general election, you may split your ticket and vote for candidates from each political party.
How Can I Vote By Mail
This year there are added ID requirements for mail-in ballots, which means there are new application forms that include the ID field.
A high volume of applications for ballots that dont meet the new requirements are being rejected in some of Texas largest counties. Hundreds have been rejected in North Texas counties, in many cases because voters are submitting an outdated form.
The states new, GOP-backed election law requires absentee voters to include a Department of Public Safety-issued drivers license number or identification card number on their application to vote by mail and on the envelope used to send in their ballot. Those without either can use the last four digits of their Social Security numbers.
The information must match whats in the voters registration file. To avoid issues, voting advocates recommend voters provide both their drivers license number or state ID number and the last four digits of their Social Security number.
Texas does not have no excuse mail voting. The Supreme Court of Texas has said that lack of immunity to COVID-19 alone does not qualify a person to vote by mail. Voters must have another physical condition that prevents them from going to the polls because of risk to their health.
But the court has not specified what those conditions are. It has left that determination up to voters, who risk violating state law.

The Louisiana Primary System
The Louisiana system, sometimes called the “Cajun Primary,” eliminates the primary election altogether. Instead, all candidates, regardless of party affiliation, run on the same ballot in November. If a candidate receives more than half of the votes, that candidate is elected. If no candidate wins with a majority, the top two vote-getters face off in a December runoff election. Qualified absentee voters receive a ballot for the November election and a ranked ballot for the December runoff, so that they can vote as normal in the general election and then have their ranked ballot count for whichever runoff candidate they ranked highest in the runoff election.
Although Louisiana law refers to the election in November as the “primary” and the December runoff as the “general” election, the November election takes place on the federally mandated Election Day and most candidates win office by receiving a majority vote in that election, so it is best understood as a general election, with the December election as a contingent runoff.
The Louisiana system is sometimes mistakenly equated with the Top Two system, but holding the first election in November and electing any candidate with more than 50% of the vote in that election makes it sufficiently distinct that it should not be understood as a mere variant of Top Two.

RALEIGH, N.C. North Carolina Democratic legislative leaders on Tuesday panned a fast-moving effort by Republicans to delay primary elections by another three weeks, saying scheduling should be left to the state Supreme Court that is scrutinizing GOP redistricting plans.
Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper also appeared to criticize the Republican attempt, which is set for General Assembly debate and votes on Wednesday. He’d be asked to sign any primary delay bill into law. Unless Republicans are able to persuade a few Democrats to join them and postpone the primary from May 17 to June 7, the GOP would lack the votes to override a Cooper veto.
Republican legislative leaders on Monday unveiled their plan to meet in Raleigh for one day to pass a measure that would pass put off primaries for U.S. Senate and House, the legislature and scores of judicial and local races a little longer. The state Supreme Court last month unilaterally delayed the primary originally set in state law for March 8 by 10 weeks. That was so the courts could hear litigation challenging the legislative and congressional maps approved in November as illegal partisan and racial gerrymanders.
“The Supreme Court will determine the constitutionality of these districts and legislators should avoid additional attempts to undermine the voting process,” Cooper spokesperson Jordan Monaghan wrote in an email.

Are Primaries Similar Throughout The States
No. There are three types of primaries used by states closed, open or mixed. In a closed primary, you can only vote for a party that you are registered with. This means a registered Democrat can only vote in the Democratic Primary and a Republican-only in the Republican Primary. Independents and unregistered voters are unable to vote in closed primaries.
Open primaries, on the other hand, permit citizens to vote in either the Democratic or Republican primary regardless of their party affiliation. A voter canât vote in more than one primary, however.
The third type of primary is a mixed primary. Here, unregistered voters have the choice to vote in one of the two primaries while registered voters must vote in the party they registered for.

Can I Vote In Both The Republican And Democratic Primaries
No. A voter will choose either to vote in the Republican Primary or the Democratic Primary, but cannot vote in both in a single year.
If a voter chooses to vote in one partys primary election, the voter will only be permitted to vote in the same partys runoff election on May 24. If a voter does not vote in the March Primary, he or she will still be permitted to vote in the runoff and will choose one partys ballot on that date.
After a voter affiliates themselves with a party, the voter cannot change party affiliation during that calendar year.
However, affiliation with a political party does not determine how a voter can vote during the General Election in November. And the next calendar year presents another opportunity for voters to decide which partys primary to vote in.
A person who plans to vote in the convention for either the Green or Libertarian Party should abstain from voting in the Republican or Democratic primary because doing so would make them ineligible.

Janice McGeachin announced in May that shes running for governor, the call went out for all good Idahoans to do their civic duty and register as a Republican so they can vote in the primary and ensure McGeachin never gets elected. That call got louder when Ammon Bundy announced in June that hes running, too.
