What About The Senate Republicans Who Voted To Convict Trump

10 house Republicans voted to impeach Trump

Seven Republican senators voted to convict Trump in his trial in the Senate, a remarkably high number. But two are retiring Sens. Richard Burr of North Carolina and Patrick J. Toomey of Pennsylvania.

And because senators serve six-year cycles, only one of the seven Lisa Murkowski of Alaska faces voters this November. Shes got a primary challenger, whom Trump has endorsed: former statewide official Kelly Tshibaka.

But Murkowski also has the support of Senate Republicans, and a wide array of support within Alaska. And Alaska now has an open primary and ranked-choice voting, meaning voters choose their candidates regardless of party in the primary, then rank them in the general election which often benefits politicians with broad support over candidates with just one niche.

As a result, she easily advanced in the states August primary. Murkowski will likely face Tshibaka again in November.

The United States Congress has the constitutional authority to impeach and remove a federal official from officeincluding the presidentif he or she has committed an impeachable offense. Impeaching and removing an official has two stages. First, articles of impeachment against the official must be passed by a majority vote of the U.S. House of Representatives. Then, a trial is conducted in the United States Senate potentially leading to the conviction and removal of the official.

In most impeachment trials, the vice president presides over the trial. However, in impeachment trials of the president, the chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court presides. In order to remove the person from office, two-thirds of senators that are present to vote must vote to convict on the articles of impeachment.

Officers Of The Trial

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said that Chief JusticeJohn Roberts had declined to preside over the trial because he believed that the chief justice only presided when the current president was tried.Patrick Leahy, president pro tempore of the Senate, presided over the trial, in place of Vice President Kamala Harris, the ex officiopresident of the Senate, who might have involved herself if any tie-breaking votes were needed.

Facing Voters After Impeachment Votes

The three House Republicans facing primary challenges Tuesday for impeaching Trump say they don’t regret their vote.

In Michigan, Meijer voted for impeachment just days after he was sworn into office for his first term. The former president has endorsed Meijers opponent, John Gibbs, a businessman and missionary who served in the Trump administration under Housing Secretary Ben Carson.

Gibbs has contended Meijer is not a true Republican because he voted to impeach Trump, and Gibbs chastised Meijer for supporting bipartisan gun control legislation that President Biden signed into law in June.

Meijer, a member of the Army Reserves who served in Iraq, has criticized Biden over the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, as well as his handling of the economy. The congressmans family is well known in the Midwest as owners of the chain of Meijer grocery megastores, and he has a large fundraising advantage over Gibbs. The winner will face Democrat Hillary Scholten in November in the states Democratic-leaning 3rd Congressional District.

In Washington state, the two Republicans who voted for impeachment are competing in crowded primaries, from which the top two vote-getters, regardless of political party, will move on to the general election in November.

Herrera Beutler has been in Congress since 2011 and represents an area that has favored Republicans.

Trial Delay And Planning

Trump impeachment: Where all 100 senators stand on conviction

In the days following Trump’s second impeachment, Senate Majority LeaderMitch McConnell argued that, because the Senate was in pro forma sessions until January 19, it could not take on any business without the unanimous consent of its members. According to Senate rules, once articles of impeachment are presented to the Senate, the Senate trial must begin the next day. Had the article of impeachment been immediately transmitted to the Senate, Trump’s trial thus would have begun on Inauguration Day, after Joe Biden was sworn in.

Senate Minority LeaderChuck Schumer called on McConnell to bring the Senate back into session immediately after the House transmitted the article of impeachment, and also to advance the confirmation process for Biden’s cabinet nominees so that the incoming administration’s team would be in place on day one. Some, including House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn , initially suggested that the House might transmit the article of impeachment to the Senate at a later date , giving the Senate time to consider Biden’s legislative program and confirm his nominees. However, House Democrats opposed a delay, stating that Trump remained a danger while he was in office, and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said on January 14 that the article of impeachment would be transmitted to the Senate without delay.

Dan Newhouse, one of 10 GOP members of Congress to vote for impeachment, set to beat Trump-backed Loren Culp in Washington state

Dan Newhouse, one of the few Republican House members to vote in January in favor of the impeachment of Donald Trump, is poised to move forward to the general election in Washington state, according to a projection by the Associated Press.

Newhouse was one of 10 Republicans who voted in January to have Trump impeached, even ahead of explosive revelations about the former presidents support and endorsement of the January 6 riots just a year prior.

This victory comes on the heels of another fellow Republican supporter of the impeachment, Peter Meijer, losing his primary in Michigan.

Republican Loren Culp, who has been backed by Trump in the election, was a close second to Newhouse in Washingtons fourth congressional district, garnering the second highest number of Republican votes in four out of the eight counties. In some of the counties where Newhouse won, however, he received almost double Culps number of votes.

Newhouse was up against six other Republican candidates, and will face Doug White, the districts only Democratic candidate, in November for the general election.

Despite his victory, the journey has rarely been smooth for Newhouse. Following his vote for impeachment in January, six Republican leaders in his district demanded his resignation.

The Impeachment : Whos In Whos Out And Whose Fate Is Yet To Be Decided

Only two House Republicans out of the 10 who supported the second impeachment of former President Donald Trump â and have subsequently been a constant target of his wrath â won their primary races.

Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the vice chair of the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021 attack that led to Trumpâs impeachment, lost her primary Tuesday against attorney Harriet Hageman, whom Trump previously endorsed. Reps. Dan Newhouse of Washington and David Valadao of California won their respective primaries.

While many of the âImpeachment 10â are not running for reelection, it was an uphill battle for those who did, with four losing to their primary challengers.

Donald Trump, the 45th president of the United States, was impeached for the second time on January 13, 2021, one week before his term expired. It was the fourth impeachment of a U.S. president, and the second for Trump after his first impeachment in December 2019. Ten Republican representatives voted for the second impeachment, the most pro-impeachment votes ever from a president’s party. This was also the first presidential impeachment in which the majority caucus voted unanimously for impeachment.

Ten House Republicans joined every Democrat in voting yes, in the most bipartisan impeachment in US history

Ten Republican members of the US House of Representatives voted to impeach Donald Trump over the deadly insurrection at the Capitol, making it the most bipartisan presidential impeachment in US history.

The break with the president stood in sharp contrast to the unanimous support for Trump among House Republicans when he was first impeached by Democrats in 2019.

All Democrats who voted supported impeachment, while 197 Republicans voted no.

The Republican votes made it a historic moment. In comparison, five Democrats voted to impeach Bill Clinton in 1998.

How the Senate will fall on Trumps second impeachment trial vote remains to be seen. Two-thirds of the 100-member body are required to convict a president, meaning 17 Republicans would have to join Democrats to render a guilty verdict. So far only a small number of Republican senators have indicated an openness to convicting the president in a senate trial, which is now set to begin after Bidens inauguration. Mitch McConnell, the top-ranking Republican in the Senate, indicated to colleagues that he is undecided on how he would vote.

Years After Tucson Shooting Intern Seeks Giffords’ Seat

Daniel Hernandez Jr., the hero intern credited with saving Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ life after an attempted assassination in 2011, is running for her former seat in Congress.

Hernandez, who recently stepped down from the state Legislature to focus on his campaign, faces another former lawmaker in the Democratic primary. However, the once highly competitive district centered in Tucson now favors Republicans after the boundaries were redrawn.

Hernandez was a 20-year-old college student in his first week interning for Giffords when he went to her Congress on your corner constituent event. A gunman there opened fire, killing six and injuring 13. Hernandez kept the Democratic congresswoman conscious and applied pressure to her head wound until paramedics arrived.

Republican Who Voted To Impeach Trump Says Former President Will Be Hard To Stop

Rep. Fred Upton , who voted to impeach then-President Trump following the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, said on Sunday he believes Trump will run again in 2024 and that voters still like him a lot.

Upton predicted to CNN State of the Union co-anchor Dana Bash that the former president will be difficult to beat if he pursues a third bid for the White House amid high prices at the pump and other economic challenges.

Hes had a number of decisive wins where hes endorsed candidates that they have won, Upton said of Trump. Hes had a few losses as well, but he certainly entertains a majority of the Republican base and will be hard to stop.

Democrats are facing historical headwinds as this years midterm elections approach, a political problem exacerbated by voters concerns over President Bidens handling of the economy.

As we look at the economy, we look at gas prices, all these different things, folks are not really happy with the Biden administration, which is why he is mired at a level even below where Donald Trump was at this point in his tenure, Upton said on Sunday.

Bidens approval rating clocked in at 39 percent, according to a USA Today-Suffolk University poll released last Monday that mirrors other recent dismal surveys for the president.

One of those 10 Republicans, Rep. Tom Rice , was defeated in his GOP primary last Tuesday against former state Rep. Russell Fry, whom Trump endorsed.

House Republicans Impeached Trump Heres Where They Stand Now

Rep. Liz Cheney became the final pro-impeachment House Republican to have their primary and the latest one to lose their race.

Cheney was among 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach former President Trump following the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack. Her impeachment vote and her participation on the House select committee investigating Jan. 6 drew the ire of Trump, who endorsed attorney Harriet Hageman in the Wyoming primary.

Trump has waded into a number of primary battles in an effort to unseat Republicans whom he believes crossed him following the 2020 election and Capitol riot. Heres a list of where those 10 House Republicans currently stand.

Rep. Tom Rices primary loss in South Carolina on Tuesday made him the first Republican lawmaker who voted for former President Donald Trumps impeachment to be defeated in a primary.

But Rice wasnt the only one to vote to impeach Trump in the aftermath of the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol. In all, 10 House Republicans moved to impeach the former president, and while half of them have chosen not to seek reelection, others are taking their chances with voters this year.

Heres where the 10 pro-impeachment House Republicans currently stand.

Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler

Herrera Beutler is facing eight challengers in the Aug. 2 primary in Washingtons 3rd district, including four Republicans. Trump has already weighed in on the race, endorsing GOP candidate Joe Kents bid to oust Herrera Beutler.

While Kent has seized on Herrera Beutlers impeachment vote on the campaign trail, however, that may not be the deciding factor in the race.

Washingtons 3rd district, while favoring Republicans, has a more moderate lean than Rices district, for example, and Herrera Beutler has sought to court the support of Democrats and independents alike ahead of the August all-party primary.

Rep. Liz Cheney

Rep. Anthony Gonzalez

Rep. John Katko

Katko joined other pro-impeachment House Republicans in January in announcing his retirement.

On January 12, 2021, Trump called the impeachment resolution the “continuation of the greatest witch hunt in the history of politics.” He added, “For Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer to continue on this path, I think it’s causing tremendous danger to our country and it’s causing tremendous anger.”

Us House Impeaches Trump For A Second Time 10 Republicans Vote Yes

    By David Morgan, Richard Cowan

    8 Min Read

WASHINGTON – Donald Trump on Wednesday became the first president in U.S. history to be impeached twice, as 10 of his fellow Republicans joined Democrats in the House of Representatives to charge him with inciting an insurrection in last weeks violent rampage in the Capitol.

The vote in the Democratic-controlled House was 232-197 following the deadly assault on American democracy, although it appeared unlikely the swift impeachment would lead to Trumps ouster before his four-year term ends and Democratic President-elect Joe Biden is inaugurated on Jan. 20.

The Senates Republican majority leader, Mitch McConnell, rejected Democratic calls for a quick impeachment trial, saying there was no way to conclude it before Trump leaves office. But even if he has left the White House, a Senate conviction of Trump could lead to a vote on banning him from running for office again.

Biden said it was important that a Senate impeachment trial in the early days of his term not delay work on his legislative priorities, including Cabinet confirmations, and urged Senate leaders to find a way to do both at the same time.

The House passed a single article of impeachment – a formal charge – accusing Trump of incitement of insurrection, focused on an incendiary speech he delivered a week earlier to thousands of supporters shortly before the pro-Trump mob rampaged through the Capitol.
