The enormous national anger generated by those attacks was also channeled by the administration toward the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, which was conceived to prevent any recurrence of attacks on such a massive scale. Arguments over that legislation consumed Congress through much of 2002 and became the fodder for campaign ads in that years midterms.
The same anger was also directed toward a resolution to use force, if needed, in dealing with security threats from the regime of Saddam Hussein in Iraq. But a new chairman, former New Jersey Gov. Thomas Kean, and vice chairman, former Rep. Lee Hamilton of Indiana, filled the breach and performed to generally laudatory reviews.

About Legislative Sessions In Florida
The Tenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution declares that any power not already given to the federal government is reserved to the states and the people. State governments across the country use this authority to hold legislative sessions where a states elected representatives meet for a period of time to draft and vote on legislation and set state policies on issues such as taxation, education, and government spending. The different types of legislation passed by a legislature may include resolutions, legislatively referred constitutional amendments, and bills that become law.
Article III of the Florida Constitution establishes when the Legislature is to be in session. Section 3 of Article III states that the regular session of the Legislature is to convene on the second Tuesday after the first Monday in March of each odd-numbered year and on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in January of each even-numbered year. Regular sessions of the Legislature are not to exceed sixty days, unless extended by a three-fifths vote of each house.
Section 3 also allows for the convening of special sessions, either by the proclamation of the governor of Florida or as otherwise provided by law.

The passage of the American Rescue Plan along party lines signaled to Democrats that moving Bidenâs agenda through the Senate wonât be an easy task, reigniting talk of ending the filibuster. That would put Democrats in a position of passing legislation without Republican support, but it could come back to haunt them and require them to force senators to come to the floor for votes.
âNothing will happen in the Senate. They need us to show up to have a quorum. They need us there if they want to get something done,â GOP Senator Rick Scott told Fox Newsâ Brian Kilmeade on Friday.
Before the Senate can start conducting its business, the Constitution says, a quorum of 51 senators must be present. Often, the Senate presumes a quorum and begins without the full 51 senators, but if a senator suggests the absence of a quorum, the presiding officer must call roll.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell reminded Democrats of this fact during a floor speech on March 16. He advised senators to âimagine a worldâ where every single task requires a physical quorum, which Republicans could significantly delay if they collectively didnât show up to the Senate floor.

What’s The Impact Of Inflation And The Economy
It’s giving the GOP some votes and may depress Democratic turnout.
Republicans are leading among those who say inflation is “very important” in their vote, as well as those feeling “a lot” of impact from higher food and gas prices.

Many Democratic voters share sour views of the economy, too, and while it is not making them abandon the party, it may make some stay home: Democrats who are feeling the impacts of higher food and gas prices are less enthusiastic about voting and less likely to say they’ll turn out. Democrats who say the economy is bad are less enthusiastic about voting than those who think the economy is good. those who rate the economy positively.
Problem With Staying Stuck At 435
The size of the United States House of Representatives has been a battleground for political power over the past decades.
This is because the majority of the House’s 435 seats are the same as they were 100 years ago — these seats serve to elect the House’s voting members.
In 1910, New York was the most significant state. It had 9 million more residents than Nevada, which was the smallest state. Today, California is home to nearly 39 million people, more than Wyoming.
Due to the Constitution’s requirement for every state to have at least one congressional district, this gap makes it more likely that states will end up with drastically unequal districts populations. Although the Supreme Court has required that communities have equal populations, this only applies to districts within a state and not between states. Even though the average House district will contain just over 760,000 residents after this round, each state’s average districts will differ significantly, especially as smaller states become more populous.
Consider the states that have only one representative, Wyoming, and Delaware. Wyoming, which has just over 578,000 residents, is guaranteed a seat, despite being well below the 760,000 national average. Delaware, however, has almost 991,000 people. This makes it less represented as it isn’t large enough to be eligible for a second seat. Montana, however, has 95,000 more residents than Delaware.

There Were Some Republican Reversals
Originally, about 14 Senate Republicans and roughly 140 House Republicans had planned to vote in favor of the objections, meaning some lawmakers did change their votes after the attack on the Capitol on Wednesday.
Those who did so have said they want to emphasize the legitimacy of Bidens victory and to repudiate the violence that was perpetrated.
I cannot now in good conscience object to the certification of these electors, Sen. Kelly Loeffler said in a floor speech. The violence, the lawlessness and siege of the halls of Congress are abhorrent and stand as a direct attack on the very institution my objection was intended to protect: the sanctity of the American democratic process.
Others who reversed their positions included Sens. Steve Daines and James Lankford , and Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers .
BREAKING: Sen. Kelly Loeffler: “When I arrived in Washington this morning, I fully intended to object to the certification of the electoral votes. However, the events that have transpired today have forced me to reconsider and I cannot now, in good conscience, object.”
But these shifts came late: While they do send a message about the election outcome, they dont obscure the role that many of these lawmakers also played in fueling the same doubts that led to rioters assault on the Capitol.

The Trump Factor: No Longer In The White House But Still On Voters’ Minds
He left office two years ago, but Donald Trump ranks essentially the same in voters’ calculus as does Mr. Biden. In fact, Democrats are more likely to cite Trump than Mr. Biden as a factor in their vote.
Trump still matters to those in his own party. More Republicans feel he is fighting for the issues that matter to them than say their own party in Congress is.
But in the wider electorate, Trump is a net-negative for the GOP in overall vote choice: those who are basing their vote “a lot” on him are leaning Democratic by five points.
And his impact might boost turnout on both sides. Among Democrats and Republicans alike, those basing their vote on Trump express more enthusiasm to vote than those for whom he isn’t a factor.
Next consider two parts of the Republican Party: the 52% who consider themselves “MAGA” Republicans, and the smaller group who don’t or don’t even know what that is.
MAGA Republicans see the Democrats as enemies, not opposition. And they’re voting more to stop Democrats than because they want Republican policies, more so than in the non-MAGA group.
The MAGA Republicans are much more enthusiastic about voting than the non-MAGA GOP.

24/7 Wall Street recently used voting data and a review of current and historical representation in Congress to determine the political leanings counties across the country. That index was then used to determine the most Democratic and most Republican counties in each state.
Alabama is a solid Republican state but the analysis found pockets of Democratic support. For example, in 2012, 61 percent of Alabama voters opted for Republican candidate Mitt Romney, one of the highest shares the losing candidate received from any state. In Greene County, however, 85 percent of the voters cast their ballot for President Obama. Whats more, Greene County helped send a Democrat to the U.S. House of Representatives in each of the last five Congressional elections.
Thats enough to make Greene County the most Democratic county in Alabama.
And what about the most Republican County? There is a lot of competition for that title but the recognition goes to Blount county, according to 24/7 Wall Street. In 2012, more than 86 percent of voters cast their ballot for GOP nominee Romney, the highest share of any county in Alabama. Also, county residents are represented in the House by the 4th and 6th Congressional Districts, both of which are held by Republicans.

Changes To House Rules
After Democrats took control of the House in the 116th Congress, they voted to change some rules from the previous session of Congress when Republicans were in control. Some of the changes appear below.
- Ethics: Democrats made changes to House ethics rules that required all House members to take ethics training, not just new members. The rules also required members to reimburse taxpayers for settlements that that result from a members discrimination of someone based on race, religion, sex, national origin, or disability, among other things. Lawmakers were also prohibited from sitting on corporate boards.
- Climate change committee: Democrats created a new climate change committee to address the issue. The committee was not given subpoena power or the ability to bring bills to the floor.

CBS News projected that Beutler did not advance out of Washington’s top-two primary system. Trump-backed Republican Joe Kent, who has repeated Trump’s falsehoods about the 2020 election, advanced, along with Democrat Marie Gluesenkamp Perez.
Gluesenkamp Perez received 31% of the vote, with Kent receiving 22.8% and Herrera Beutler following with 22.3%.
Herrera Beutler issued a statement conceding one week after the election. She thanked the district for its support but did not mention Trump by name.
What About Jan 6
Right now, Jan. 6, 2021, is a big deal with the Democratic base, who are already voting Democratic. Three in four of them say it will be very important in their vote, on par with other issues.
The question is whether it continues to press the Republicans’ descriptors of “extreme.”
Republicans aren’t paying as much attention to the hearings. But for those who are, they might have a marginal impact on vote beyond that. The Republicans paying at least some attention are more apt to call their own party “extreme” than those who aren’t, and we see a slight amount of potential vote switching or consideration among them still in the single digits, yet more than the Republicans who aren’t paying attention.

In 1967, Ronald Reagan, then governor of California, gave a speech in which he sought to define what the Republican Party was and who it included.
This proposal is not because of a policy or political difference, but because some members have chosen to work with the Democrats to investigate and potentially remove Republican Members from the House. Republican Conference meetings are an opportunity for elected House Republicans to come together and strategize the most effective path to push back on the radical policies of Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats.
