In New England, Bill Belichick is still calling the shots, and it remains to be seen if it’ll be Cam Newton or first-round rookie Mac Jones starting at QB1. In the preseason opener against Washington, Newton completed four of his seven throws on the night for 49 yards, not bad numbers but not great. As for the rookie, Jones completed 68.4% of his throws in the preseason opener for 87 yards.

The Mac Jones era officially begins Thursday night.

The New England Patriots will host the Washington Football Team in their preseason opener Thursday at Gillette Stadium, giving Jones his first taste of NFL action.

Veteran quarterback Cam Newton is expected to start the game, but Jones — the Patriots first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft at No. 15 overall — should see plenty of reps.

Curran: What Pats fans should key on in preseason opener

New England’s defense will get a first look at new Washington quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who has some talented weapons at his disposal in running back Antonio Gibson, wide receivers Terry McLaurin and Curtis Samuel and tight end Logan Thomas.

The Patriots have plenty of newcomers on both sides of the ball looking to make an impact, so Thursday’s game features a good amount of buzz for a preseason contest.

Here’s everything you need to know about how to watch Patriots vs. Washington.

Patriots Vs Eagles Prediction For Thursdays Game

There were a number of questions surrounding both of these teams heading into Thursdays NFL game. We had an early glimpse of them going head-to-head in joint practices, but we got to see it on the field in front of a stadium full of fans.

The Patriots were actually slight favorites with many sportsbooks. That was somewhat surprising the news we had heard early in the week suggested the Eagles were dominating the Patriots in those joint practices.

Where this game was tricky to judge is when it comes to motivation. Usually, a team with an active QB battle would be the one to look at with more to play for. However, while Joe Flacco might not actively be in a QB battle, in his mind, he likely still wants to prove he can be a starter.

That could have made for an intriguing NFL game today, as Flacco would be facing off against Newton or Jones when he is on the field. You would expect nothing less from a former Super Bowl-winning QB.

That could also mean this is one of the higher-scoring games of the week, and the total at 38.5 reflects that. Both teams had players capable of producing long touchdowns. That meant the over was in play in this type of game situation.

Who Is The Patriots’ Fourth Receiver

Over the course of camp, three receivers have separated themselves from their competitors. Jakobi Meyers has consistently looked like the best receiver on the Patriots. It hasnt been close. Nelson Agholor has had some injury problems and some dropped passes but hes clearly a step ahead of most of the others. Kendrick Bourne also has stood out and clearly looks like the third-best receiver on the Patriots.

Whos the fourth? NKeal Harry looked like it but he struggled and is now out with a shoulder injury. Kristian Wilkerson has had a lot of good moments but also had a lot of drops. Gunner Olszewski also has received a lot of playing time since Harrys injury but he also has been inconsistent. Will someone emerge on Sunday? Can Wilkerson make the 53-man roster? Will someone like Isaiah Zuber or Tre Nixon stand out?

New England Patriots Loser No : Isaiah Wynn

New England Patriots Preseason Game 2 Defense Analysis

Things certainly didnt get off to a great start for Isaiah Wynn. On the Pats third offensive play of the game, Wynn allowed Chase Young to blow by him and get a clean shot on Cam Newton. Newton was lucky to get the football out in time to prevent a fumble from occurring.

Chase Young. Still unreal

New England Patriots Wide Receivers Vs Washington Football Teams Cornerbacks

One of the best parts about the NFL preseason is seeing young players get an opportunity to shine with positions on the depth chart at stake. Thats the case with both of these teams and there are additional storylines thanks to free-agent additions and trade possibilities.

  • NKealHarry watch: While a majority of the players in this game compete for spots on their current roster, this 2019 first-round pick will compete to attract interest from other NFL teams. After requesting a change of scenery, Harry can use the snaps he receives to prove he is an NFL-caliber weapon.
  • A nickel in Washington: Washingtons defense is set on the boundaries with William Jackson III and Kendall Fuller, but the starting spot in the slot is still open. Benjamin St-Juste, a third-round pick who grew up playing football in Canada is a player to watch.

There is going to be plenty of talent on the field in this matchup, even with top starters likely seeing limited action. New England will give us a first look at Nelson Agholor, Kendrick Bourne and Marvin Hall in their new uniforms. THeyll be challenged by Washingtons deep secondary, including Jimmy Moreland, Darrick Forrest, Troy Apke and St-Juste.

Advantage: Washington Football Team

Ny Giants Vs Browns Prediction For Preseason Week 3 Vs Patriots

Mac Jones has flashed during the preseason, looking more than ready to start Week 1 for New England, and is coming off an efficient showing against the Philadelphia Eagles last Thursday, completing 13-of-19 passes for 146 yards.

Meanwhile, other than the offensive line for a couple of series in the preseason opener against the Jets, the NY Giants starters have yet to play a down.

Jones and the Patriots seem like the smart play, as does taking the under in a game that features the NY Giants stingy defense but an offense that has yet to see any work together this summer.

New England Patriots: 3 Losers From First Preseason Game

Isaiah Wynn #76 of the New England Patriots

The New England Patriots first preseason game of the season is officially in the books, with the team picking up a solid 22-13 victory over the Washington Football Team. It was great to see the team back in action in a game setting, and making it even better was the return of fans to Gillette Stadium to watch the action unfold.

For the most part, there was a lot of good that came from the preseason opener. The offense was able to move the ball pretty consistently for the most part, regardless of who was under center, and the defense did a good job of shutting down Washingtons offense.

Even in victory however, there are always plays that could have been run better or players that could have run them better. Even in a relatively low stakes contest such as Thursday nights, that was certainly still the case.

While preseason games are ultimately unimportant to the outcome of the season, they are vital for players attempting to make the final cut. We already took a look at two players who were the stars of the game, but now its time to take a look on the other side of the fence. Here are three players who came out of the first preseason contest as losers.

New England Patriots: 3 Things To Watch For In Preseason Finale

Isaiah Zuber #19 of the New England Patriots

The only thing standing between the New England Patriots and regular season football is tomorrow nights preseason finale against the New York Giants. Once tomorrows game is wrapped up, and the final roster cuts are made by August 31st, the focus of the NFL world will shift to the games that actually matter.

Despite the Patriots stomping over their previous two opponents in preseason play, there is still a lot on the line for many of the players on the roster. Whether they are fighting for a roster spot or better standing on the depth chart, there is sure to be a lot of action to unpack from the final preseason game.

We have already seen some of the roster battles get won, such as J.J. Taylor forcing New England to trade Sony Michel away. We have also seen some get reignited, with the recent trade for Shaun Wade spicing up the cornerback battle in this upcoming game.

With that in mind, there is certainly a level of intrigue surrounding the Pats final preseason contest. Theres a good chance the results of this game, like all others, will have a major impact on how the final 53 man roster shakes out. Lets take a look at the top three things to watch for in New Englands preseason finale against the Giants.

Eagles Vs Patriots Week 2 Preseason Preview And Prediction

The Patriots came down to the City of Brotherly Love to hold a handful of joint practices with the Eagles leading up to their Thursday night preseason game. While these teams are now more familiar with one another, the on-field action projects to be gritty. There is no shortage of bad blood between these organizations or their fan bases after splitting a pair of Super Bowl meetings within the last 15 years.

Even teammates will be duking it out tonight, albeit not directly. Both squads still have plenty of work left to do sorting out their depth charts following a slew of new additions this offseason.

One key positional battle to watch will be the one for New Englands No. 1 quarterback gig. Head coach Bill Belichick has yet to officially reward Cam Newton, the incumbent starter, with the job. This has left the door open for Mac Jones, the No. 15 overall pick in the draft, to potentially usurp the veteran before Week 1 of the 2021 NFL season kicks off.

Dillard, a first-round pick in 2019, has the pedigree but has struggled with injuries, giving the 68, 346-pound Mailata a real shot at overcoming his seventh-round draft status and becoming a starter in Year 3. Whoever performs better tonight will likely gain a big leg up in their quest to become Philadelphias starting left tackle in 2021.

New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones warms up for the team’s preseason NFL football game … against the Washington Football Team, Thursday, Aug. 12, 2021, in Foxborough, Mass.

ASSOCIATED PRESS

Week 2 of the 2021 NFL preseason begins on Thursday night with a primetime showdown between the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles.

This Pats-Eagles matchup, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET and will air on the NFL Network, starts up a loaded exhibition slate that will see all 32 teams in action before the end of Monday night. Tonights game is one of the more anticipated preseason games of Week 2, featuring two teams hungry to avenge last years shortcomings and make a leap forward in 2021.

With the league reducing the preseason schedule to just three games for the 30 teams that didnt participate in the Hall of Fame Game, time is running short to make roster evaluations and depth chart adjustments. These teams, which already had to trim their rosters down to 85 players from 90 earlier in the week, must ensure their projected starters arent rusty before the new campaign gets underway as well. Due to this, first- and second-stringers should get more run in Week 2 than they did in the preseason openers.

How Will The Patriots Deploy Their Pass Rushers

If you want to talk about an embarrassment of riches, take a look at the Patriots pass-rushing linebacker depth: Matt Judon, Donta Hightower, Kyle Van Noy, Josh Uche, Chase Winovich, Anfernee Jennings and Ronnie Perkins.

From the practice field:Mac Jones has inconsistent day as Cam Newton returns

Thats not even fair. Its become abundantly clear that the Patriots have an elite pass rush. The biggest question with this group is how the coaches will go about using everyone. Will we see Judon, Hightower, Van Noy, Uche and Winovich on the field at the same time? Will Uche and Winovich play only in pass-rushing situations? Itll be fascinating to see how this group is utilized throughout the season and we should get a nice look on Sunday especially if starters play the entire first half.

An Emerging Third Cornerback

New England Patriots vs. Philadelphia Eagles | Preseason Week 2 2021 NFL Game Highlights

Over the last week, there’s finally been some movement in what had seemingly been a battle of attrition for the depth spots at boundary cornerback. With Stephon Gilmore’s absence ongoing, that spot becomes more and more important. 2019 third-round pick Joejuan Williams followed up an interception in the preseason opener with two solid practices in Philly. He hasn’t exactly been lockdown, but he’s been completing his assignments, which may be enough for the third cornerback spot. He’ll look to keep the momentum going Thursday night. Justin Bethel is another player to watch. Bethel has been primarily a special teams player since arriving in New England in 2019, and hasn’t played significant snaps on defense since he was with the Arizona Cardinals in 2017. However, he’s seen more cornerback work in both practices and the lone game so far this summer, and the team may be preparing him to fill that role on an emergency basis. His development on defense is worth keeping an eye on as well.
